a very serious, concerned, querie...

this is addressed to all of us...what is happening? why is it happening? what can be done?

from all appearances, america, et al, is in the business of exporting pedopheliacs and sex tourists. what? why?

recently there was the article on pbh about an american soldier raping a young colombian girl. in japan, repeatedly, soldiers are convicted for similar crimes; in iraq, europe, etc. etc etc. and worse, by far, is the american pedaphile tourists who travels about the world to ply their diabolic habits upon innocents.

is anyone possessed of insight on all this horror? i, personally, am taken by the number of brothers who post here on pbh about their sexcapades with colombian women. what is all this. i don't feel undersexed, nor am i driven by some hidden/latent impulse to conquer a series of ladies---specifically in my youth when i wasn't married--nor do i look at my days in terms of 'getting laid'.

the purpose of this open querie, is not to point fingers, as judgement is not mine. rather, to seek clues as to why, we as americans, have spread this (earned) reputation about the world. that doesn't mean that men from other countries don't share the same guilt, but the news seems to indicate that the primary perpetrators are us...american men.

i find it not just alarming, but shameful and disgraceful...both on a personal level and as a statement on what america values. tell me, brothers, what is your take on all of this. we just can't wait, with eyes closed, hoping that maybe it'l just go away. it wont. i'm a practicing catholic and am completely taken aback by the members of my priesthood who bear this shame.

i think there are many concerned and well minded posters on this sight who can share their insights into this problem and maybe, just maybe, help to move us collectively towards healthy change, if not rehabilitation.

First, in the case of Colombia, one or two cases of an American being involved in these crimes does not make a serious trend. Colombia has a serious problem with these types of crimes committed by Colombians. The cases involving Americans or other foreigners would not even amount to 1/10 of 1% of the crimes committed in the country.

It's important to keep a clear perspective of the frequency of what is ocurring compared to what press coverage leads one to believe. News is made of these events because of their uniqueness. But, if you read the news regularly, you would read about these types of events ocurring daily in Colombia by Colombians. Because they are so common, they do not stand out as much in our minds.

I have read some gruesome stories lately of related crimes perpetrated by Colombians. Like the adolescent who raped a related 4 yr old and then killed her and left her under a bed in the family's home. And plenty of stories of Colombians murdering all their children and then themselves. But, the moment a foreigner is involved, people pay more attention and demand action to stem the 'trend'.

The same goes for Mexico. There is a trend highlighted in the Mexican press about Americans crossing the broder into Mexico looking for sex. But at the same time, the country has a continual problem with Mexican men looking for (and finding) underage girls in Mexico.

And, as far as foreigners travelling, looking for opportunities for sex, they too may stand out because they like to make outlandish comments and mistakenly think they are moving up the evolutionary ladder based on how many women they sleep with. But, there are far more decent foreign men in Colombia who appreciate traditional values like those of Colombians, but who do not stand out because they are not obsessed with publicizing their sexual activities.

I think that a good majority of American and European men suffer from low self esteem and are intimidated by American or "modern" women. They feel the need to conquer and do so with easy targets - Teenagers or younger, impoverished women in their or own country or abroad etc...

Society is to blame. The feminist movement and then men becoming over sensitive "whatever you want, honey, I''m here to please you"... men become pushovers and as a result a hidden inner resentment towards them from us.

As much as we say we want someone who will listen and rub our feet and cook us dinner and do whatever we want when we want - it is not really true.

As much as feminism has helped in our careers and given equality and blah blah blah. Is that type of women men really want? The wife of Adam Sandler in Spanglish? This is "equality" causing an "imbalance". Talk about irony.

Think about the countries where these sex tourist types of men originate from (US, England, - first world countries) and then think about the countries that have more traditional type customs regarding marriage and relationships in general between men and women (Poland, Russia, 2nd world countries).

I'm not talking about priets, pedophiles, rapists nor crazed soldiers.

How to change society? Good luck.

Juli, that is quite a generalization you make about milliones of men. You generalize about men, even though a very small amount of men actually travel for these reasons. How many American men would you say are in Colombia compared to 300 million people residing in the US?

Some men actually respect and admire 'modern', independent women. I have heard many 'modern' women say they still desire to feel protecting by their partner. Careers aside, the genders still follow many traditions in both worlds.

rob...your points are well taken/made. however they didn't directly address the issues as to why this is so common amongst american men...not to negate this problem by men of other nationalities. near daily in the news are stories of men having posted photos of themselves molesting children 4 and up...maybe even younger. horrific issues. say me nay.

my questions are simply. what is the root of these problems? what if any measures are open to society to correct this? and is rehabilitation possible?

It's time you open your eyes to the reality of the nature and problems with religion. All religions have been created by MAN, and have been used to persecute innocent, non-believers, throughout the history of the world.

Religions as we know it is, DEAD!!

The reality is that EVOLUTION is the true story, not CREATION, as many have been tricked into believing.

There is no "American Sex Tourist Traveling To Have Sex With Young Childeren" epedemic, as others would like you to believe.

Rob77's post sums it all up.

Juli hits on a great point. But I don't think it has anything to do with low self-esteem. American women are to blame, but not as much as society. A MAN should act like a MAN!! And... a WOMAN should act, dress, walk, talk, behave like a WOMAN!!

An American Soldier raping a young girl has nothing to do with the overall behavior of American men. He's just one man, under due-stress, who has lost his mind, due to the bullshit wars, and he becomes uncontrollable and does what he does because he no longer believes in the world he is living in, because he sees all the lies!!!

"Sex tourists travel to countries such as Cambodia, Thailand, Costa Rica, Mexico and Brazil"

The truth is American/European sex tourists travelling to these countries have actually caused these countries to start enforcing laws (18 and over) that protect underage girls. Not that the local authorities care but they don't want any negative publicity. It was a bigger problem when the local men were doing it before a few sex tourists came along. Of course there are a few incidents but nothing like you hearing from the news reports.
I was laughing when I read about a guy from Europe on the internet going to Paraguey because he heard that there thousands of girls prostituting themselves there. He heard about the so called trafficing. He was disappointed when he got there. He only found about 8 girls working the streets. Every night it was same skanky girls....LOL

People who abuse children should be put away permanently. I don't think anyone disagrees with that.

But your agenda is not really about that, is it? You really just don't like gringos dating colombianas. Sounds like racism or insecurity to me.

But no worries, I'll leave you alone to go have conversations with your other aliases. I should have learned by now to not feed the trolls.

podborski says on Oct 14, 2007, 10:26:

sorry to derail your thread dwmte...

but BoyHowdy was a troll and I think he does a disservice to the real problem by being dishonest.

as to what anyone can do about it, well I confess I have no idea. I leave that up to the police, courts etc.

My own belief is that the problems of prostitution or child abuse/slavery arise in the poorest countries, so the only real, long term solution is to fight for political/economic change away from corrupt, dictatorial governments to more liberal capitalist ones.

Lcacique says on Oct 14, 2007, 10:49:

Unfortunately, I find myself in agreement with many of the posters here. The US is not the only country that is involved in sex tourism.

However, to deny that it is a problem, as some have, is a joke. Sex tourism is huge, and many people from the industrialized world take advantage of it.

I see nothing wrong with focusing in on "americans." I live in the states, was born in the states, and therefore I am concerned about the actions of my countrymen. While I do not like the fact that there are rapists in Japan, Zimbabwe, Brasil, etc. of course I will focus on my country because it is "mine." It is where one has the most influence. By saying that other countries have this problem as well, it comes off like you are implying that we should just forget about it. I keep my house clean because it is mine, regardless of what my neighbor's house looks like.

podborski, he may talk about the paras killing someone because they are guilty of roughly 80% of the human rights abuses. I see nothing wrong with talking about that. It should get 80% of the coverage. In the states, the paras get about 10% of the news coverage.

U.S. is one of the few countries where prostitution is illegal. That could be a factor. It makes sense to go a country where its legal. I know if i was an old dude who could'nt get laid anymore and you gave me choice between going on a sex tour to another country or sitting in the park feeding the pigions, i would rather go on the sex tour. Shiiiit, i'll go now. I remember back in the 90s I had a hot girlfriend from Czech Republic here in New York. I still left for Cuba and partied with many chicas...LOL

"Religions as we know it is, DEAD!!" - completely false and unnecessary.

Don't knock what you are clearly unable to appreciate about religion - any religion. At minimum, they are wisdom traditions, some more than others. At best, well, this subject is not an appropriate for this forum. I also take issue with the bureacracy of religion, but they are a necessary component nevertheless.

As to the main point of this thread, I think this problem is not limited to American men. In fact, I'm not convinced of the magnitude of the problem in comparison to men from other countries. I believe someone else here expressed the same sentiment.

Mr. Hollywood says on Oct 14, 2007, 11:31:

Doug, I think you're right that there's a growing issue with this in Colombia and will continue to be if the country gets safer for foreigners. However, I think in terms of actual "sex tourism" the worst offenders right now are Europeans, which doesn't mean there are no American's also participating.

Truth is, though, that the US is one of the only countries that will actually prosecute its own citizens for sex crimes they commit while abroad.

i think i made my disclaimer clear....american's are hardly the only men guilty. can i make it clearer? the point was that 'regiem change begins at home'...clean up my house before i begin with yours.
too, it was not a post about men getting laid...again, hardly. it's about the exploitation of the innocents. sex, between consenting adults is no crime...i don't care if money is involved. it's just sex.
sex with children so young that they might still be in diapers, is a crime...a crime against humanity, and unfortunately, there are a small number of american men who participate in this horror. true, a small number, but from my perspective, any and i repeat, any is way to much.
to attack my religious convictions/practices is so off line as to make me wander what is the intent of the poster. character assassination? slander? or just being selfishly driven to impose your 'beliefs' on others. i don't think it could have been clearer as to the disgust i bear over pedophiliac priests. and, aside from your comments, i remain a practicing catholic.
now, back to the thread, it was a serious quiery as to what, collectively, society (us) can do to rectify this human abberation. the question remains.
