A question about transferring money....

Looks like I am finally making my move in June...will be living in Envigado!

I have a small business here in Miami and do ALL my banking via Citibank. I will be there on a spouse visa, and dont know exactly all the benefits that gives me regarding banking, cedula, insurance, driving, property ownership or anything (chime in if you know, though!)

So this is the question - How do yuo guys recommend transferrance of money to Colombia??? The Citibank there is not exactly tied together so it is of no advantage. Is there any way to do it electronically to my advantage via wiring, I guess if I found a bank that would let me open an account? Is Western Union or Moneygram the only good option? Once every few months when I travel back by bringing cash in hand?

Please give me some legitimate experiences or recommendations!!!!

Thanks Tinto... Thanks for the advice... I guess what I was trying to drive home was regardin regular banking needs, and the availability of funds regularly, not really large sums for large purchases. How is everyone else doing it? I just want to be able to pull funds monthly from my American bank accounts to live on.

. I have withdrawed up to 900,000 pesos in one day(3 withdrawls of 300,000 pesos each) using my ATM card.Never needed any more than that. Most ATM machines in Colombia will accept your ATM card if it has "cirrus" or "plus" on the back of the card.Check with your bank about the ATM fees that apply for withdrawing funds internationally. Some ATM card fees can be pretty high.If you have a ATM card through a Credit Union the fees will be much lower,if any.
You can also get a paypal debit card.According to one PBH poster you can open up by mail a free checking account with no ATM fees with Affinity Bank in Ventura, Ca., and with National Interbank in Indianapolis.

To open a bank account in Colombia you need to have the "Cedula" ID and have resided in Colombia 6 months. If you do not have a bank account in Colombia and need to make a large sum transfer,my Attorney/Realtor will transfer funds to you anywhere in Colombia at a 4% transaction fee.Western Union charges like 10% to transfer funds.for more info.contact me. arthurbrode at aol.com

Bradvicky you are pretty much in the same boat as me. If you like you can PM me and I will give you more info. on getting the Cedula and opening an account. It all depends on what you want to do. Little day to day things it is easy just to use your ATM like everyone suggested. However I keep a bank account in Colombia for wiring larger amounts in. You need a Cedula which you can get and then you need to reside in Colombia for six months unless you have a few contacts. The banks are pretty strict on the 6 month issue and will look at your passport. My uncle called for me and they just looked the other way. So if you have a contact down there you can get an account opened quicker. Western Union is very expensive. If you can get an account open then you just pay the domestic banks wiring fee which is about $35. Therefore use the ATM for the small stuff and wire the larger amounts to an account you eventually get opened. I would look into the fees which I found high for debit cards in Colombia. Not really necessary if you can save a few buks and use your USA ATM. Be careful not to wire large amounts into your wife's account as it will be taxed as a winfall. Keep the account in your name solely for large wires in and always file the proper forms for Real Estate.

hmmmm are you closing you account here in the usa? My understanding of things with a spousa visa you can get you colombian ID card ( you may have to travel to Bogota to do this) with that ID you can try to open a bank account. But if your leaving you US bank account open use your ATM card it is the cheapest way to get moeny, transfers have higher fees and a lower exchange rate. I use my ATM in Enviagdo when I am there and pay no fees at all. I get to avoid the long lines in the banks. there are limits on how much can can get each day.I hope this helps you some

Wow, thanks everyone.... I will also hit that search that was offered, but that was some good info! I spent all last night searching things from pre-paid atm cards to different banks.

Only once a month do I really need a lot of money, and that is to pay rent and all. Otherwise just little stuff. I do bank with Citibank here in Miami, however I looked at my ATM card and couldnt find any Cirrus or Plus logos...I'll be damned if I have never even tried to use it to withdrawl in all the times I visited!!!!

I will definitely research the Paypal ATM debit card option, because I do receive money via paypal through one of my companies! Also I checked out and set up a Moneygram account linked to my bank. With economy service You can send up to $899.00 in one day with a send fee of $21.00 (which comes out to a 2.3% fee). Plus this can be done right from your computer in Colombia, then wait the 3 days and go pick it up. Not bad if planned for ahead?

Thanks so far everyone, and roomwithaview/Brians I will contact you!
