Any original digital photo file should have EXIF data on it. Most pics swiped off the internet will not. That would be one way to check.

There are some programming libraries that could let a website read EXIF data, but I am not sure they would work with PHP(I think this site is programmed in PHP).

Honestly, it would be a bit of a pain to manage such a photo contest.

I would suggest creating a PBH group on flickr. Participants would have to sign up, but it is free and even less of a hassle if you have a Yahoo email/handle. This would make it a lot easier to post and check EXIF on images as flickr does this automatically. Then we could simply post a link to the flickr group and everyone could post their votes in the PBH thread.

I created a flickr group. If we end up going that way, people will have to sign up at flickr.com. It is free and you do not need the Pro subscription. Once you have an account, you can join the PBH Photo Contest group using the above link.

Then you can upload pictures to your account. When you have uploaded your pic, go to your flickr page and click on the pic you want. This will display a bigger view of your photo and you should see a SEND TO GROUP. Simply choose the PBH group and you are done.

My suggestion would be for us to set a tag with the category for each pic. You can do batch editing, so it should be pretty quick and easy.

This doesn't mean I believe anything should be set in stone yet, but let's use this list to start things off:

City Streets
People
Animals
Beaches
Rumba
Buildings
Natural Scenery
Action

The categories are set by the moderator(s), people cannot create new ones whenever they feel like it.

Pictures cannot span multiple categories.

Pictures are voted for by people signing their name on the "comments" section of the relevant picture.

We wrap it up on (say) the 1st of September.

I often want to strangle them. For example, I put our wedding photos up on flickr, but made them part of a private set. Then I clicked "Share this set" on the set page and sent a guest pass to my relatives and friends. This allows people to view you private photos without the need for them to sign up on flickr.

It is really going to be hard to tell. As I mentioned, most original photos will have EXIF information unless they have been edited in a program that doesn't support EXIF.

If you click on a photo's thumbnail, you will go to the photo detail page. In the bottom right, you may see the type of camera that was used to take the picture. That comes from the EXIF data and usually means that it is an original shot.

However, the lack of EXIF data doesn't mean that the photo is not an original. I suppose we could do a google image search and see if we find the picture, but that would be a hassle. I suppose we will just have to trust people. It's not like we are giving away prizes so hopefully people will be honest.

I think we will get some contributor's that are not on PBH (there is one or two already I think that are in other groups and maybe decided to join our group seen as they too have lovely pics) so what happens in that case?

I am looking forward to seeing more pics, even the one's I may not vote for are lovely and make my day looking at them, the important thing is to participate....come on guy's!
