A PBH photo contest:

Inspired by another thread...

Why not have a (Colombia) photo competition?

Peter could even make a separate section of the site for it, and it could be divided into different sections (cities, beaches, rumba, people, nature, etc...). Members could vote for the winning photo.

The only downside is figuring out how to make sure that people don't cheat (i.e. post some pic they found on the internet, instead of one that they themselves took).

Well, just an idea...

Any original digital photo file should have EXIF data on it. Most pics swiped off the internet will not. That would be one way to check.

There are some programming libraries that could let a website read EXIF data, but I am not sure they would work with PHP(I think this site is programmed in PHP).

EXIF data is stored by most digital cameras when they take a photo. This will typically include, date/time, camera type, aperture, shutter speed, etc.

Honestly, it would be a bit of a pain to manage such a photo contest.

I would suggest creating a PBH group on flickr. Participants would have to sign up, but it is free and even less of a hassle if you have a Yahoo email/handle. This would make it a lot easier to post and check EXIF on images as flickr does this automatically. Then we could simply post a link to the flickr group and everyone could post their votes in the PBH thread.

Okay ColombianoGringo - if you think you can figure out how then cool, that's that hurdle out of the way.

We could decide on the categories (each category could have its own thread), then people could post the pics onto the thread. Any that are off-topic would be deleted by mods.

Rules could include that the pictures must be 640x480 maximum.

And the categories? I'm not sure how wide or narrow they should be, but to throw some out there...

I created a flickr group. If we end up going that way, people will have to sign up at flickr.com. It is free and you do not need the Pro subscription. Once you have an account, you can join the PBH Photo Contest group using the above link.

Then you can upload pictures to your account. When you have uploaded your pic, go to your flickr page and click on the pic you want. This will display a bigger view of your photo and you should see a SEND TO GROUP. Simply choose the PBH group and you are done.

My suggestion would be for us to set a tag with the category for each pic. You can do batch editing, so it should be pretty quick and easy.

Have we decided on a final list of categories? I will post a notice on the group page.

BTW, does anyone else want to be a mod for the group?

Here's my idea for a provisional list of categories:

This doesn't mean I believe anything should be set in stone yet, but let's use this list to start things off:

City Streets
People
Animals
Beaches
Rumba
Buildings
Natural Scenery
Action

The categories are set by the moderator(s), people cannot create new ones whenever they feel like it.

Pictures cannot span multiple categories.

Pictures are voted for by people signing their name on the "comments" section of the relevant picture.

We wrap it up on (say) the 1st of September.

I have a million cousins from Nariño to Norte de Santander. Just a few months ago, I was in Bogota introducing my wife to some of my relatives. As usual, there is some cousin from my parents' generation. She says the typical "Oh. You are so and so's son. ]I haven't seen you since you were 3 years old. Don't you remember me?". I often want to strangle them. You just aren't looking in the right places. I have taken many bikini pics of my wife in Neiva and there isn't a beach within a hundred miles. I am not sure how hot Bucaramanga is, but they probably have pools as well.

I don't know if anyone has noticed yet but you can view the pictures in different sizes on flicker....click on the picture....look at the detail area bottom right .....click different sizes and choose the large size.....the pictures change completely ...... and comes to life..well mine do heheheheh

On a related note, you can also share private pics by creating a "Guest Pass".

For example, I put our wedding photos up on flickr, but made them part of a private set. Then I clicked "Share this set" on the set page and sent a guest pass to my relatives and friends. This allows people to view you private photos without the need for them to sign up on flickr.

It is really going to be hard to tell. As I mentioned, most original photos will have EXIF information unless they have been edited in a program that doesn't support EXIF.

If you click on a photo's thumbnail, you will go to the photo detail page. In the bottom right, you may see the type of camera that was used to take the picture. That comes from the EXIF data and usually means that it is an original shot.

However, the lack of EXIF data doesn't mean that the photo is not an original. I suppose we could do a google image search and see if we find the picture, but that would be a hassle. I suppose we will just have to trust people. It's not like we are giving away prizes so hopefully people will be honest.
