what are typical cell phone calling plans like in Colombia?
Are cell phones expensive in Colombia? What is a typical cell phone bill for a month's service in, say, Bogota?
Are they like the US, where you are billed for a preset amount of minutes each month, on contract, or do you prepay cell service, (i.e. buy a sim card full of minutes)??
I use VONAGE VoIP for calls TO Colombia to my wife.. What is the most economical way for a person to call the US FROM Colombia?
I appreciate any thoughts on this....

Atrevido says on May 4, 2008, 04:33: Most people just buy minutes. That way you can always say "no tengo minutos" when you don´t want to call some one. I have a Nokia (about $30US) that I bought from TIGO. It´s one of their cheapest phones with no bells or whistles but has a better antenna than their more expensive models, important when you´re in areas with limited signal.

Boatygringo says on May 4, 2008, 07:29: I usualy buy GSM unlocked phones from e-Bay when I am in the USA, much cheaper and good quality, they work with any of the Colombian internet providers simcards. I then buy pre -paid phone cards. You will have a problem getting a phone in Colombia if you have no Cedular. Post paid plans seem to be almost impossible to get as thay require soooo much paperwork like a cedular, bank records, and co signers. Boatygringo |

Bill Turley says on May 4, 2008, 07:42: We have had a service that is called Moviestar today. We have two cell phones, with sequential numbers by the way, and postpay. The equipment is ver reasonable but the fact we have had service for more than 10 years continously. My wife has a plan with 500 minutes/mo and I have 300 minutes. My wife needed to replace a malfunctioning phone and when she threatened to quit the company they offered her a Sony-Erickson "super" phone, camera, internet, walkman all included for a price of 60,000 pesos. For me the keys are too small. I have a simple Samsung that was included with the plan. Our combined cell bill is about 130,000 pesos. Mr. Bill Somondoco |
