You probably need to triple that number when you add in the number of dual citizens.

I was born in the states, so I am north american. But the state department has no idea when I am in Colombia.

That number must include an awful lot of colombian americans as I just dont beleive there are 61k american gringos in COL. Although I am only familiar with MDE when you take away the europeans and the canucks I doubt if there are more than 500 or so american gringos living there, and MDE is the 2nd largest city and not sure but probably has a higher number of gringos than Bogota, but that is just my opinion and I have no way of estimating the real number. The number of Colombians entering the United States each year increased only slightly until the early 1950s, when it rose from a few hundred to more than a thousand, owing in part to upheaval associated with the civil war of 1948. Nor did the rate decline with the restoration of civil order in Colombia. As a result of land reforms and the introduction of agricultural machinery during the 1960s, the population became concentrated in the metropolitan areas and a deep economic recession set in, forcing many Colombian Americans to leave the country in search of work. The number that settled in the United States continued to grow rapidly: according to the annual reports of the Immigration and Naturalization Service 116,444 Colombians entered the country between 1960 and 1977, the first large influx driven by purely economic reasons.....
As a result, the rate of undocumented immigration soared: estimates of those living in the country without permanent residency status ranged from 250,000 to 350,000 in the mid 1970s....
By 1987 Colombian Americans were one of the fastest-growing Latin American groups in Miami....
The largest concentrations nonetheless remained in New York City, Miami, and their environs: in 1994 there were 86,000 Colombian Americans in New York City (mainly in Queens), 56,000 in northern New Jersey, and 84,000 in Dade County, Florida.
?? Maybe we could trade back??

The interesting thing to know is in this the number, how many are non-hispanic north americans. It doesn't say. In the case of Guadalajara Mexico, there are over 70,000 retired north americans(non hispanic). Like Kingfish wrote, a large number of these are Colombian Americans. 3 Colombians here in my condo bldg are planning to return to Col to retire it lends credence to what Kingfish wrote.

Simon, this is a big debate, and since I've got too much time on my hands today I'd like to help clear it up. Do a little public service.

It's incorrect in both English AND Spanish to call a person from the US a North American or Norteamericano when trying to express nationality. North America is a Continent, not a nation. In The States we're taught that North America consists of Canada, the US, and Mexico, although I understand that Colombian kids are taught that Mexico is in Central America. In any event the Canadians probably resent being lumped together with Americans, ay?

Therefore in English, my nationality is American. In Spanish it's Estadounidense. You could end this whole debate if you can translate Estadounidense to English. I can't. Maybe United Statian? I think where you're confused is in your translation of América to English, which should be The Americas, not America. In English The Americas refers to the western hemisphere, and people from The Americas are generally called westerners, along with Europeans. America is the USA (again in English).

I really hope this helps.

oh, fuck it! just say there are now 61,000 nortenos and in my era, there were ten. simon's not gonna ease it up, he'll confuse it more. damn near a half year went by before i saw a gringo in medallo.....then, it was a flyboy (dope hauler) just passin through. it was lonely in those days. at least in terms of foreigners. i early on just accepted that my 'new' life was made up of colombianos and the smartest thing i could do was get used to it.

it was another half year before i saw another, and that was an old woman who had been married to a colombian forever and had lived in medallo since the late 40's. met her in BIC.
