BOGOTA — Colombian officials say three adults have been killed and two children wounded in two related anti-personnel mine blasts in the country's northwest.
The top security official in the town of Dabeiba, Wesly Uran, says two brothers aged 9 and 10 were wounded Thursday night when they set off a mine. The boys' father, mother and uncle died in a second blast as they went to aid the youngsters.
Uran says the mines were on a forest path a three-hour walk from the town center, apparently placed by leftist rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.
Colombia's government says land mines killed 88 people and wounded 403 in the first nine months of this year.

jimbo67856 says on Nov 7, 2009, 20:24: This article suggests the FARC has their own capacity for producing them, although it doesn't rule out foreign acquisition. http://www.laht.com/article.asp?ArticleId=325828&CategoryId=12393 Errors of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it. ---- Thomas Jefferson 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Robert Jorge says on Nov 7, 2009, 21:04: A mine can be made pretty easily. 40% ammonium nitrate fertilizer mixed with diesel, and you have a high exposive. Just need a triggering device. But I was curious if that is what is being used, or if the scum-bags are getting commercial product. "You can not take the barrio out of the girl you really can't." jimbo67856 says on Nov 7, 2009, 21:35: Yeah idk. I'd only be guessing. If they're self-sufficient w/ mines, tho, it's def not a guess to say that's not good. Errors of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it. ---- Thomas Jefferson 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

jimbo67856 says on Nov 8, 2009, 09:35: Douglas, you're right. It did. What drew my attention was that they're making their own, tho, cuz that they have that capacity just isn't good. And I also agree about using captured folks who've exhausted appeals to clear mine fields, esp FARC. dwmte7 says on Nov 8, 2009, 10:23: hmmmm, jimbo, i hadn't thought about those appeals prisoners. the point is basically ANYONE found guilty of capital offences should donate their lives to the mine fields. murderers, pedaphiles, terrorists, etc. patriarch 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

jimbo67856 says on Nov 8, 2009, 10:32: Douglas, yeah that's what I was driving at. I just mean we shouldn't take someone who isn't necessarily guilty yet and do that to 'em. But if they're actually guilty and have been given ample chances to prove otherwise (but haven't) then I'm w/ ya, esp for that group of sickos you mentioned. Basically anyone who thrives b/c someone else suffers horribly should be included in the list. dwmte7 says on Nov 8, 2009, 10:37: i had a thought some time back, that because land mines have proliferated all over the world, those prisoners who 'qualify' for this work should be turned over to the hague and sent here and yon where ever the hague decides to do this work, as it is an international problem. all over africa, the mid east, central and south america and asia.....they're everywhere by the millions and it's the innocents who pay the price. i'm not saying military personnel aren't effected, but they're a small percent compared to the civilian populace who suffer injuries. and apparently, these anti-personnel devices are not designed to kill, rather to maim and injure. pity. so we have all these thousands of peasant children running around without lims as a result............... patriarch 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

jimbo67856 says on Nov 8, 2009, 10:57: Sadly that's the truth. And it's not only children (the saddest victims) but it's also livestock (which ppl depend on for food/money) and family pets, etc. Then there's the realities of de-mining an area which is hugely dangerous and very expensive. And sadly, some of the children w/ missing limbs then become a financial burden to families b/c they can't work the fields, etc. That to a family which is probably already very poor. It's just sick in every respect, really. Errors of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it. ---- Thomas Jefferson 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
