What's happening in Cartagena (PLUS 45% homicides) and Medellin (PLUS 36% homicides)?

Homicides rates: Colombia compared to Venezuela:

Venezuela: (48 homicides per 100 000 inhabitants - 130 homicides per 100 000 in Caracas!)
Colombia: (36.1 homicides per 100 000 inhabitants - 19.08 homicides per 100 000 in Bogota)

The first two charts (homicides & kidnappings) list the 27 Colombian cities with over 200 000 inhabitants.

N° 1 in the chart has the WORST figures, N° 27 has the BEST figures. Thus, Peirera is the worst in terms of homicides.

The other charts cover the seven largest cities of Colombia which are listed in alphabetical order. The first two columns are the actual numbers of occurences, the third column is the % change from 2007 to 2008, and the last column is the weighed percentage (per 100 000 inhabitants).

It appears the first 2 are weighted percentages also. Bogota is one of the BEST at 25, yet saw nearly the same homicides as Cali, #4.

Personnally, I'm much concerned about homicide rates and "Lesiones personales" (assaults with grievous bodily harm). Bogotá fares well on the former, but not so good on the latter (although it's improving). Cali is the most dangerous city for agressions with violence/injuries.

Sadly, Barranquilla is now the city with the most "Hurto a personas" (thefts, robberies and assaults without violence/injuries). Up 59%!

Cali is more dangerous for murders than Maracaibo Venezuela. /(1300 vs 900 for same population)

I think I better stop the trips to the Discos in El Centro.

A more efective way too publish is rate per 100,000 population.

Looking at it this way, from murder perspective, Bogota is significantly safer than all other cities, including Cartagena, which is really a moderately (not extremely) safer than Cali , a city 2-.5 the size.
