droble77 says on Mar 22, 2008, 20:20: Depressing. :( There are few currencies that have stayed stable to the dollar. I think the Argentinian peso is still a decent deal. But the COP under 2000 and the Brazilian real under 2.0 is not a lot of fun for me. These past several years of the Bush policies, combined with certain other factors, are starting to take their toll. The sad part is that many people believe the dollar MUST go down even further before the U.S. will be able to dig itself out of this economic and fiscal mess it is in. . .

miamimike says on Mar 22, 2008, 20:45: Droble77 ;Maybe a change will begin on Jan 15, 2009 from around Noon to 2:30 pm,,,, "Wait a minute. What did you just say? You're predicting $4-a-gallon gas? ... That's interesting. I hadn't heard that." -- Feb. 28, 2008 --George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., |

Robert Jorge says on Mar 22, 2008, 23:37: So: basically, if somebody had the means (money to invest), they could buy Colombian pesos right now - make a 100% return - and make half a million dollars on a 500 thousand dollar investment? Why doesn't everybody do this if it is that easy? --"I believe in making the world safe for our children. But not for our children's children, because I don't think that children should be having sex." - Jack Handy |

Catfish35 says on Mar 23, 2008, 01:41: The dollar will sink further, no doubt, the Federal Reserve cannot go much lower in cutting interest rates to attempt to stimulate the economy. People are scared and do not know what to do in the US. " Say hello to my lil' friend"Tony Montana |

jarhead says on Mar 23, 2008, 10:10: Interesting how some people on here are so happy about this whole "U.S. dollar tanking" against the peso thing, they claim to love Colombia so much, etc.etc.etc....well there are ALOT of Colombians feeling the pain of this whole revaluation crap, there are a shitload of them losing their jobs right now, and a whole lot more about to...I for one have let go of some, and will let go of more as we head for the magical $1,000COP to $1 dollar mark.........................

Frank Rizzo says on Mar 23, 2008, 10:40: Jarhead...you make a very good point.... i'll keep remodeling cali...but won't even think of starting on medellin until there is some upward change.... i'll drop off probably 10 workers in the next month as a start. They definately feel the pinch in colombia from what i'm hearing.

ColombianoGringo says on Mar 23, 2008, 16:57: The weak dollar doesn't just hurt gringos. It also hurts Colombians living in the US who send money to their families back in Colombia. It also hurts American NGOs that do work in Colombia and other places.
RAAAY says on Mar 23, 2008, 17:21: The strong Peso will have a negative effect on some companies........and on individuals whose earnings are in dollars. But in the general scheme of things, it will have a positive effect on the country as a whole. .........Its useless to argue with ignorance |
RAAAY says on Mar 23, 2008, 23:14: Rub...............I would say even less than 15 years,,,,,,,,,,,,,their transformation into a dynamic, export orientated economy. really took off after Lula came into power. The energy, that the various goverment agencies apply to helping companies with exporting, is truly phenomenal. They fan across the globe to every imaginable type of trade show. .........Its useless to argue with ignorance |

miamimike says on Mar 24, 2008, 10:44: Not to mention some of these south american countrie's export economies are Commodity driven so they kust happened to be in the right place at the right time. Countries like Chile-Copper, Argentina-soybeans ect., Venezuela--Oil, Brazil-Ethanol. Brazil gets credit Bigtime for developing their Flex-fuel car concepts and Alternative fuel industry. jarhead says on Mar 24, 2008, 12:59: My work has to do with the classic car industry, alot of the products that are on the market today are made in China, and the Far East....we (a group of enthusiasts) saw a lot of potential in Colombia a few years back, I made the move, and set up a small manufacturing plant, the Dollar was at almost $2,800, we have seen the dollar steadily lose ground here in Colombia.....the idea was to bring in ALOT of manufacturing here to Colombia, we have cotracts with BIG players in the classic car industry, but the way it looks right now, my potential investors see this place as too unstable, the currencey fluctuations make them nervous, Chavez makes them nervous...it took a long time just to convince people that the crates of parts sent north from here were not going to have any cocaine in them, it took time to work thru all the bullshit, the stereo typing etc.etc..........we have been trying to hold on, and stay put, and we could probably keep going for quite a while, but in this business, you either grow, or dissapear.... the problem is, the currency going up, the currency coming down, there is no sense of stability, prices fluctuate wildly(for steel at least)...fuel prices are incredibly high for a "producing" country, add to this, the occasional temper tantrum by our inmature neighbors, and you have a "never a dull momment" type of situation.....daily.....that's ok if you are a retired american looking for fun, or a "drop out" hiding down here, but for a manufacturing business getting ready for a major "growth spurt", this is not good.......we might have to find a quieter neighborhood......in the end, it's always the Colombian worker, and his family who winds up "taking it in the shorts", sort of speak...not good....

jarhead says on Mar 24, 2008, 13:16: I have been to China, I have been to big the factories, right before I moved down here, that is a place, and a people I do not want to do business with, the quality is not there, unless I want to move my family there, and be on the factory floor all day....China is not the panacea (as far as manufacturing goes) that most people believe it is.....there are ways to compete with China, and beat them....we cater to a customer who does not want anything to do with Chinese made products being installed on their cars......besides, I would rather create jobs here in Colombia, than move my manufacturing to the far east....
jarhead says on Mar 24, 2008, 13:29: yeah, people are like that though.......people are very finicky with their investments, especially when it comes to "third world" countries, and speically when their money is going to be "on the ground"....it's a big difference when you buy into a third world growth fund here and there, it's another thing altogether when an investor puts his money into funding a production facility, the machinery located in that facility, labor, with all the problems that brings...etc,.etc.etc....

nine inch nails says on Mar 24, 2008, 13:56: I don't think so. A weak dollar is not good for CO or Europe. Europe very concerned now their exports will be going down. get down, get down |
nine inch nails says on Mar 24, 2008, 13:58: and then there will more riots in the streets like in say Paris a couple years back because Govt. won't have the tax revenue to pay for more Govt. programs to keep the natives from becoming restless. If dollar continues to stay low big big prolems for Europe forthcoming. get down, get down |
pedro says on Mar 24, 2008, 14:56: Speaking of Brazil. They have a phrase "jogo de cintura" (translation -- hula hoop). It describes the entrepreneur who has to be constantly in motion to keep the hula hoop spinning. He is always changing, refining, adapting as economic conditions whipsaw around him. que nota! |
jarhead says on Mar 24, 2008, 15:26: I think you guys are right about "trying" to do any sort of exporting out of Colombia....... short of Cocaine, Heroin, Meth, organized crime, Oil, Flowers(soon they will be getting killed), Coffee(they are getting killed also), Coal, and all the other "traditional" exports....you are pretty much "dead in the water" sort of speak....maybe it's time to head to China, India, Bangladesh, Vietnam(the new China), and take advantage of the slave labor there.......:):):):):)
jarhead says on Mar 24, 2008, 16:26: Colombia's internal classic car market is really very small, it is controlled by a handful of traquetos and oligarcas, we already buy here in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and other countries, and export worldwide, we already import from the U.S., restore and sell here, and other countries in South America...we are also the only company in the world to offer a certaing brand of classic car built 100% in Colombia, we are about to start exporting these vehicles as kits, to be assembled in the U.S., the U.K., Mainland Europe, Australia, and South Africa...
Frank Rizzo says on Mar 24, 2008, 16:32: So Jarhead..... after what age can we import a car in from the US?? thanks.
goin_south says on Mar 24, 2008, 16:41: I think the "Catfish Commentario" above rings alot of truth. and, thank you. |
jarhead says on Mar 24, 2008, 16:43: it has to be 30, and in some cases 35 years or older, you have to get your import licenses from MINCOMEX before you actually start the import proscess, then you will have to have the "higher ups" at the club de antiguos y claiscos de colombia, give you their blessing, they will write a leter to the Dian saying that the car in the pictures that you submitted, indeed looks like a classis, once the car lands in Colombia, they will do a full inspection, along with the DIAN, and give the DIAN their ok.....it's more involved than this, but these are the basics..........if you want to import a "regular" used car, or bike, there are several other ways of legally doing so, but as always, very expensive, and troublesome.......
Frank Rizzo says on Mar 24, 2008, 16:46: Jar...are you aware of any grand nationals in colombia for sale?? That's what i'm wanting and still a bit too young based on your info... thanks..
jarhead says on Mar 24, 2008, 16:49: there are a couple out there, not for sale, but then again EVERYHING is for sale in Colombia, it really depends on your budget....
