$100 Million US For Ingrid?

Today´s El pais states that the Colombian government is offering one hundred million US to whichever member of the FARC secretariat provides information on Ingrid´s location allowing for a military rescue. Poor Ingrid for sure but seems like that kind of dough could provide a heck of a lot of housing for the desplazados.

With 100 millions USD you can make the whole FARC desert. Not the bosses, who probably have got more already.

Really... 100,000,000 USD divided what? 3,000?
It is more than 30,000 USD each, probably more than what a poor soldier would get fighting for FARC his whole life.

Which begs the question: if it´s only a hundred million pesos how´s that supposed to tempt a FARC secretariat rolling in drug money. That´s just a small portion of what they ask for the average kidnap victim in other words, peanuts. Anyway that´s a direct quote from El Pais. I can´t help it if their reporters can´t convert peso/dollars.

the facts are that the govt has established a 100 million dollar fund from which to pay rewards etc to members of the FARC that desert with their kidnapped victims. Its not just for Ingrid, get the facts straight, its for any kidnapped victim. of which there are between 1000 and 3000.... This is nothing new...100 million dollars is just a few suitcases of $100 bills.. like they found several months ago in Cali.. 20-30 million of

There may be some confusion about what is being reported. Caracol Radio featured a report where Piedad Córdoba "revealed" an under the table deal offered to vaguely (indeed laughably so) specified members of the Farc's secretariat or their intimates.

http://www.caracol.com.co/nota.aspx?id=607231

Colombiareports has taken this and turned it into a claim that there is a US$100 million offer just for Ingrid.

http://colombiareports.com/2008/06/03/government-is-trying-to-bribe-th...

I find no mention of this story at all in the the online version of El País. I don't have access to a print version here in Alabama, jeje...

There is a US$100 million fund established and well publicized, but it is a general fund from which rewards are to be paid to any farcster who deserts and brings with him/her, or IIRC provides good info info regarding the whereabouts of, a hostage or hostages. This is very different from a secret US$100 million reward specifically for Ingrid which is how this post presents it and is the accusation made by Córdoba.

If Bin Laden is worth $25-$50 million USD dead or alive to the United States, it boggles the mind to think Ingrid is worth $100 million alive to Colombia. Or maybe Sarkozy is borrowing the $100 million from Buggy's piggybank and giving it to Colombia?

http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewPolitics.asp?Page=/Politics/archive/200707/...

Related note: With national newspapers already writing Sarkozy's epitaph, I wonder if Ingrid will soon fall off the French radar?

I completely agree with what bamacellist is saying.

This is nothing new, the $100 million dollar fund has been mentioned in public for some time now, but it is not only about Ingrid, as Piedad Córdoba is arguing with little more than her own opinion as backup.

If she has any other information, she should be willing to reveal it, so that we may know and debate it, instead of making accusations and speculations.

Still, I wouldn't be too surprised if the fund's creation may have tempted someone within FARC to contact the government, even if it leads nowhere or might even be a scam.

Has anybody else thought about how a FARC turncoat would receive these funds? Can they open up an account at BancoColombia and have it wired in? How do they get their cedula? Will the government have the payment in cash delivered? These rewards are a bunch of crap, in my opinion.

I suppose for some it would be just like the current reintegration program with this additional benefit. Why would you suggest the money would make it any more difficult? For others, there is the offer to send them to France. In either case, I'm not seeing any reason why transfering these funds couldn't be a fairly straightforward process once elegibility has been established.

Mr. Hollywood says on Jun 6, 2008, 10:15:

I'm sorry but does anyone believe this is anything but gaslighting designed to further confuse and disorient the remaining FARC leaders? And Cordoba is even playing into it.

The $100 million fund has been around for a long time. NOBODY is going to get the whole fund for delivering Ingrid, even if they showed up with her in a taxi outside the presidential palace. But all these rumors will trickle down to the people in the jungle actually watching over the captives, and someone is going to take the bait, just like they already did with information on Reyes and Rios.

Yes it's part of the propaganda war that the Govt is playing-now that FARC is down for the count kick them as hard and as often as possible in as many ways as possible.
