1 MB to a 4MB line -------- MEDELLIN INTERNET & Vonage & Blackberry ?
An apartment I was about to lease was just moved up from a 1 MB to a 4 MB line!
So, does this means that if I had leased the place with a 1 MB line that Vonage would not have worked well?
What does this mean to move to a 4 MB?
Do I have a dishonest realtor who was willing to lease me a 1MB place because I don't know the difference?
Any advice would be appreciated on realtors, MB's, Vonage and Blackberry use in Medellin.
p.s. (I have searched past posts) Looking for new info.

Another question I have for all you smart tech guys and girls:
Let say I have a great Vonage system in Medellin....2 phone lines, and fax.........
Can I have my current USA blackberry hooked up to my Vonage so when I leave my apartment calls can be forwarded to my blackberry as though I was in the office?
I'm a little confused on the whole blackberry thing and the costs.........
I want to have Vonage in my apartment so I can work as though I was in the USA........and when I travel, forwarded to my blackberry, but with no extra costs...........
An I dreaming?

Based on what I know about Internet Service in Colombia, it would not make a bit of difference wichever of those speeds you had. Vonage would work with either 1 Mbps or 4 Mbps.
You should be able to forward the Vonage Calls to a USA phone number but since this is a USA Phone number, but you are in Colombia, you will be paying Roaming charges which are very very very expensive.
In short, there is no free or easy way to do what you want with the Vonage and a US Cell Phone.

1. 1 MB Service would be fine with Vonage unless your doing heavy internet usage at the same time using Vonage..
2. 4 MB Service you are paying out your ass...thats an expensive service in Medellin
Options
1.Set up your blackberry for call forwarding before you leave its home network to your Vonage Line and pay call forwarding fees depending on service..Example Sprint .20cents a minute. Leave the apartment call forward your Vonage line to a prepaid Comcel,Tigo,or Movistar and pay .18cents a minute but Vonage to Colombian Cellphones service sucks my opinion.
2. Use your blackberry for international roaming at 1.50-1.99 for inbound and outbound minutes in Colombia. Tell your people to call the Vonage line all the time and when you leave the apartment forward your Vonage via online to your blackberry line in the US but you will pay to answer that blackberry in the streets..at the roaming rates.

1Mb used to be a premium internet plan in Medellin.
With the arrival of Telmex, cost is down and speeds are up. 4Mb is the new blue chip plan.
Your landlord is just moving with the times.
I have no experience with Vonage, but I expect it probably would work equally well on either 1Mb or 4Mb.
que nota!

In Colombia like in the US lines (cable and DSL) are sold as being a different upload and download speed. For exmple with EPM the basic is 300kb down and 128kb up. Vonage works with a birectional stream of around 90kb assuming their is a call going on. If no call on Vonage then this bandwidth is free. With Vonage its possible to change (configure) your adapter to use less bandwdith (50kb) which might decrease the quality of the call. This also I have found doesn't allow for the fastest fax tramissions.
I program all my routers with Quality of Service which basically give VoIP calls (Vonage, UMA) the priority of the network bandwidth. This assures a clean connection if the LAN/WAN is getting slammed.
I also have Packet8 and Packet8 is like Vonage in many ways. Vonage has UNLIMITED calls to landlines in Medellin (and the other major cities in Latin America) in their optional $15 dollar package. Europe is free in the basic package. They have other options for China, etc. with each section of the world for 15 dollars.
Packet8 uses less bandwidth and but doesnt have the unlimted calls to landlines in Colombia. Its cheap and great for origination lines here in Colombia. Test show it uses only about 40 kb of bandwidth bidirectionally.
I have a Florida number that forwards to my Movistar phone here in Colombia. So my kids call a 954 number and it forwards to my Colombia Cell at the rate of 9 cents a minute.
Having my Backberry here with Tmobile. With the international data plans all my email follows me everywhere in Colombia, Panama, etc. This is unlimied international data and emails for the $20 dollars a month with Tmobile.
Tmobile has another service called Hot Spot at Home for $9.99 which includes a free (after rebate) Linksys (or D Link (yuch) router. Using Hot Spot at Home enables me to call the states and people to call me on my Tmobile Blackberry for unlimited for FREE as long as I am connected to a wifi connection. But if I walk outside or drop off wifi and the call automatically converts to the local telco (Comcel, Tigo, Movistar) then I am charged $2.99 per minute for international voice roaming. THe solution is to turn off the Mobile network which forces a Wifi (UMA) connection then if you loose the connection the call is dropped vs paying 2.99 a minute.
Before the end of the year I plan on moving from El Poblado to an casa/finca in Envigado or Sabineta. I want to be close enough to get a 1 megabit connection however I want to be far enough where I can have some land and horses. Then I can ride my horse to the store to get Pilsen with my Blackberry in my saddlebag (grin).
I hope this helps. any questions please ask.
