You don´t have to buy it here is just $200 US in the US. If you are going to buy it here the price is going to be calculated this way:

$200 US (Product Price CIF)
$ 77 US (impuesto de renta 38.5%)
$ 20 US (impuesto de guerra 10%)
$ 32 US (IVA 16%)
$ 20 US (Utilidad para el vendedor 10%)
_______________
US $ 566
US $ 35.34 S&H
_______________
US $ 601.34

mmmm as cheap as in the US ;)

LilaM, good calculation, but you forget to note that AT&T is subsidizing the cost of the iPhone and requiring all people to sign 2-year contracts at a minimum of $59.99/month.

The cost of the iPhone without any contracts in the US (if it is even possible to buy it this way), will be AT LEAST $199 $175 (early termination fee from the 2-yr contract) = $374. From what I understand, AT&T is planning on increased the ETF to $250 for the iPhone (which is a departure from their across the board ETF of $175). Even if you do get the iPhone in the US, it will be several months at best before the hacking communities unlock it.

In Colombia, more than likely ONLY Comcel will offer the iPhone, also with a similar 2-year contract with the phone costing around 400mil COP. The monthly plans will be expensive, because I am sure 3G data rates here are very pricey. For those that want the new 3G iPhone to use in the normal pre-paid fashion via recarga every time you run out of minutes, you will be waiting quite a while (at least until Oct-Dec).

I was told last week that ColombiaMovil and Comcel were going to be carrying it in Colombia. I know that Telefonica is somehow involved, but I don't know if that means that Movistar will also have it.

I have and use an iphone and I do not recommend this phone for use in Colombia. The reception on this phone is terrible.

Someday soon I will be going back to my $49 Nokia.

If you want to buy an iphone, buy mine..................cheap!

There is no 3G service in Colombia. At best its EDGE which when turned up is 2.5G.

And yes, AT&T has agreed to pay Apple $424 over 2 years on every phone sold.

You can buy an unlocked iphone on mercadolibre.

If an unlocked 3g iphone from the US at cheap price will be available is yet to see: rumors are that buyers will be requested to sign the AT&T contract right away when buying the iphone.

Unlocking for 2.0 software is ready.

SAO PAULO (AFP) - A Brazilian company is claiming to be the first to have found a way to unlock Apple's new iPhone 3G, getting around restrictions that require users to sign up for calling plans with exclusive carriers, reports said Tuesday.

ADVERTISEMENT

The website of Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo and various online sites including Digg.com and Gizmodo.com said the firm, DesbloqueioBr, hacked the phone by altering its firmware and by adding a special card add-on to the SIM chip.

The results allow iPhone users to connect to any carrier, not just the one that has an exclusive arrangement with Apple in each country where the phones are sold.

In Brazil, where the slick handsets have already become a must-have item for the wealthy, the iPhone is not yet officially available.

Brazilian purchasers have to go abroad or order by the Internet to get one of the gadgets, more than one million of which have been sold since going on sale in 21 countries last Friday.

The Brazilian hack doesn't come cheap, however.

DesbloqueioBr plans to charge between 250 and 375 dollars to unlock an iPhone, which itself costs around 200 dollars in its basic eight-gigabyte version -- but only with the subsidy offered by signing on to the exclusive carrier.

There are some problems with the Brazilian fix.

One of the company's partners, Breno MacMasi, admitted that the quality of the connection for the phone can vary, Folha Online reported.

Apple can also wipe out the hack with a software update.

But MacMasi predicted that there would always be ways to circumvent the locks.

"Apple has made some big mistakes, so it's certain that we will be able to come up with another hack. It's going to be a game of cat-and-mouse," he said.

As I wrote before, software unlocking is not a problem and jailbreak was done on the beta release even before the official release.
But, as rumored, the buyers are asked to sign a contract right away. So...
