* BOOKING THE RETURN LEG OF AN AIRLINE TICKET *

Really appreciate all the help I received from you guys on the visa post. All sorted: now all I have to do is buy my air ticket to Cali. A few things!

(i) Anyone know where I can find the best prices?

(ii) Can anyone clarify - must I absolutely have a return ticket or can I get away with buying a single? Anyone done it before? Is it a risk not worth taking?

(iii) If I do buy a return ticket, must the return be within 1, 3 or 6 months? You mention that the initial tourist visa is valid for 1 month although this can be extended before expiry to 3 and after that to 6. Bearing that in mind, will it be a prob if I book the return for 6 months? Is that being a bit presumtuous about the fact that I expect to be extended? How do the authorities view it?

Once again, thanks for any advice!

Return Ticket I have purchased three round trip tickets to Colombia in the last 12 months. Immigration at the airport only wanted to see my passport and nothing more. I think the airline selling you the ticket will be the one to ask. I think they are on the hook if DAS refused you entry.

P.S. It has been my experience that a "one way" costs as much as the round trip ticket.

You need a ticket out. Without a VISA, you must have a ticket out of the country 180 days or less after you enter assuming that you had not been in Colombia the prior 185 days.

One-way tickets can be the way to go if you are going to be in the country for a long time. I bought a one-way ticket from MIA to CTG for around US$280 for an Oct. flight. I had to search around a bit to get that price. I plan to return to the US in May. A round-trip ticket was about US$1300. I do have a VISA, but I may buy the May ticket before I leave just to be sure.

I thought you needed a return or onward ticket but NO! We just came back from our Colombia trip in July and I purposely never gave any one all our tickets. The Denver and Maimi airline people only saw one way tickets to Colombia and no one - NO ONE asked a single question!
I had the return tickets in an envelope marked 'Return' in my day pack but never had to show them to anyone.
So, I don't know who/what says this is a requirement and who enforces it?
Good Luck

rjstuff The airline check in desk is supposed to enforce it.

If a passenger is found not to have the return or onward tickets on arrival in Colombia (presuming immigration ask to see your return tickets, only once in twelve times in my case), they can refuse you entry to the country, also they can fine the airline for letting the passenger on board without the correct paperwork.

yahoo travel Yahoo travel is where we found the best price for tickets. You select your destination and click if you want a one way or round then it will bring up the best deals. We are flying from Kansas City to Cali and it is costing us approximately 1500 US for both tickets.

Interesting, we flew in on Avianca So, the early morning crew (around 5 A.M.) must have been too sleepy to look for everything! However, she was very good at removing my wife's I94 (which I had forgotten to ask her to remove (I was sleepy too!)) As things go, my wife could enter without a return ticket but I couldn't (USC), but no one asked to see the return tickets. So, I guess the enforcement of the rule may be lax.

I would think... that in the modern world of computers the airlines would know if you had a return ticket without needing to see it.

return ticket for visa holders Hi everyone^_^ I really need to know whether I need a return ticket to enter the country on a "courtesy" visa (for a cultural exchange lasting about 5 months). You need a return ticket to enter as a tourist (at least according to the State Dept.), but they don't say anything about visa holders. The consulates and the embassy have not been helpful at all.

Also, I was wondering if anyone had recommendations about finding a cheap one-way (or even 2 way) ticket from Houston to Cartagena. I have found one for $450 on kayak.com, which I was going to snag soon since it's getting a bit close. However, I wanted to be sure that a one-way is ok first.
