A strong peso means a strong Colombian economy! Or do you think I'm gonna root for the peso to drop to $1 = 1 million COP?

I think Colombia's central bank still has wiggle room to keep the peso from getting too strong - inflation doesn't look to be a real problem at this point.

Bians is right. The dollar is / will continue to sink against most currencies so its not necessarily an indication of a strong Colombian economy.

Aji1 says on Oct 6, 2009, 12:35:

Simon, Colombia is so linked to agricultural and commodity type exports that a strong peso makes their goods costly to the buyers of those exports. Like Brians mentions, a weak US economy and strong peso can't be good for Colombia since the US is such a major buyer of Colombian exports. Your argument is too linear to adequately explain the dynamics of the situation. But one could make the argument that a weak dollar is not good for Colombia either given the trade situation as it exist. Either way you slice it it makes Colombian goods more expensive in the US, which is not good for Colombia. It will cause a decrease in jobs for Colombians and even if the peso can buy more, fewer people with jobs means that overall the benefit of a stronger peso will not equate into prosperity or a better standard of living for the average Colombian. IMHO anyway.

I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!

It is the Statist administration in Washington, DC and many of the states (read Democtrat controlled) that are causing this problem and it will only get worse until they are thrown out of office. (Don't hold your breathe)
The goal is to destroy the US economy and replace capitalism with fascism (state controlled economy) They already own the banks and automakers and parts of healthcare (Medicare, Medicaid, Schips etc.) soon to be all of healthcare. The Cap & Tax bill that the house already passed will eventually cost every family over $3000.00 on their utility bill.
Governor Jennifer Grandholm promises 40,000 green jobs by 2020 for Michigan. Will there be 40,000 folks left in Michigan by then???
She's already lost 680,000 real jobs for Michigan and is projected to lose another 370,000 by the end of her term.
The union thugs think we need to tax the remaining businesses even more as plants are closing left and right to move to friendlier environs.
On the national front, the administration's brainiacs think it would be easier to extend unemployment benefits than to create new jobs. They seen unemployment expanding into the distant future and they are happy about it as they gleefully print more fiat money.
Hey, that's just the GOOD NEWS !!!!

Choose Liberty, there is no such thing as equality.

emerson_wylde says on Oct 6, 2009, 14:05:

Pretty bold conclusion jb -- that the GOAL is to "replace capitalism with fascism" -- if you said the effects of what is happening is moving us away from one and closer to the other -- well your points support that. IF that were your point I'd agree a little bit - but we'd have to consider the factors that got us here - which paints a different picture.

The guy who started the fascist enterprise known as the USSA also known as GovernmentSachs was George W. Bush. Remember his famous statement that he had to destroy capitalism to save it? He and his henchman Cheney never showed the slightest interest in the Constitution. The only worthy man left is Ron Paul but the vermin citizens of the USSA do not deserve him. May they rot in hell forever!

Aji1 says on Oct 6, 2009, 17:26:

Ron Paul is the man. However, the US media will never let him fair coverage in the press. They marginalize him as a nut on the fringe. The US media has completely abdicated their responsibility as the watch dog and are 100% complicit in the downward spiral of civil liberties and the constitution as the law of the land. UTC I disagree with you, the US people do not deserve this fate because most of them are reasonably good at heart. But this will probably come to pass due to being overburdened just trying to make a living (by design) which then causes apathy and complacency. This started well before Bush as well I might add.

I'm not big Fan of gold, but I found this article.

It is not unusual to see the U.S. dollar down against the Canadian dollar, and other currencies, on a day when stock market indexes are rallying. In the old days of this stock market recovery, this action would be attributed to investors leaving the safety of U.S. Treasuries and embracing risk overseas.

However, on Tuesday, the U.S. dollar’s downturn is being blamed on something a little scarier: The Independent newspaper has a scoop whose headline says it all: “The demise of the dollar.”

It begins: “In the most profound financial change in recent Middle East history, Gulf Arabs are planning – along with China, Russia, Japan and France – to end dollar dealings for oil, moving instead to a basket of currencies including the Japanese yen and Chinese yuan, the euro, gold and a new, unified currency planned for nations in the Gulf Co-operation Council, including Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Qatar.

“Secret meetings have already been held by finance ministers and central bank governors in Russia, China, Japan and Brazil to work on the scheme, which will mean that oil will no longer be priced in dollars.”

Central bank officials have been busily denying any such attack on the dollar – but reactions suggest that investors are taking the article seriously. The Canadian dollar rose to 94.6 cents (U.S.) against the U.S. dollar, up 1.1 cents. Perhaps more ominously, the price of gold surged to a new record high of $1044 an ounce, up nearly $26.

FT Alphaville has a nice roundup of some of the reactions to the dollar’s moves – some saying that this is big news, others downplaying the importance. Here are a couple of snippets:

Dennis Gartman, Gartman Letter: “It is unanimous: ‘They’ hate the U.S. dollar and it appears that a fully fledged attack is being made upon the U.S. currency this morning, with money flowing anywhere and everywhere….”

Barcap: “An eventual move towards oil being traded in a wider range of currencies is possible, but in our view, the Independent article makes it sound far more imminent than it likely is. In particular, the political consensus needed to achieve this would be very difficult, especially at a time when there is an apparent lack of consensus on more proximate issues for GCC countries, such as the Gulf Monetary Union.”

And check this link for a little history....

I dunno but I think the dollar is going in the shitter.....

1 funny, 0 helpful.

emerson_wylde says on Oct 6, 2009, 21:30:

capt_j - it aint that easy. For the U.S., years of living beyond our means, along with poorly regulated financial markets have put us in a bad way. Market purists say the market should be left to sort itself out - car makers should fail if that's what its come to, and banks too. BUT policy makers on BOTH sides of the aisle want to "cushion" the blow - even more massive job losses make re-election difficult -- so they intervened in a big way, and began printing money like crazy. But that doesn't really change the basic dynamic, it just spreads the impact out more broadly and over more time. Bottom line - its like that old commercial with the mechanic saying "You can pay me now......or you can pay me later..." But we're gonna pay one way or another - nothing magical about it.

utopia- you have it backwards. american multinationals like HPcompaq, sylvania etc use slave like chinese labor to make billions. The US is engineering a pseudo default of their debt by creating inflation. this is also how they will take care of the future insolvency of social security because real inflation will always be underreported. Once we lose the reserve currency status the standard of living of anyone getting paid in dollars will decline.

UTC, you should be proud of the Messiah, like you he also seems to hate the USA. Bush was not a conservative and his fiscal policy was mixed (tax cuts good, SPENDING A DISASTER), but at least he loved his country.
It was the dems that created fannie and freddie. It was the dems that forced the banks to write bad mortgages. Those laws were started by Jimmy Carter and made worse by Clinton.
The USA has been the greatest country on earth because people were given the freedom to act in their own SELF-INTEREST, not some collectivist state controlled from above. The problems arise when government intervenes in th market with regulations. We need more freedom to succeed not more regulation and taxation. Every dollar any government spends must first be CONFISCATED FROM SOME ONE THAT EARNED IT.
Aji1, do you think Patrick Henry would agree that this is a CIVIL DISCUSSION???? Hmmmmmm?????
