Top things to do/see in Colombia

I thought that a basic survey done by travellers and Colombians of what to see and do in Colombia might be a useful addition to the "preparing for your trip" PBH guide. Also it will help those who post the weekly email about what to do in a month in Colombia. I hope this hasn't been done before, tell me to PO if it has. If anyone wants to add questions please private message me and I will make a 2nd or revised survey. Ive left out Q´s related to best bars, women and restaurants as there are a lot of threads on these.

You can private message replies or post them in the thread (to keep it near the top) and once Ive gathered the info I´ll ask Peter to add it to the guides. Know stupid comments (unless there really funny) and I only just thought of this so all additions will be helpful. If we get a good 30 replies i think this will give new visitors a few ideas what to see in the country other than what the guide books say.

Ohhh and please no replies about how you shouldn't follow others suggestions and highlights aren't something you can find in a guide blah, blah blah. we all know that but some rough info with some new ideas won't hurt a traveller.

Additional Information Can you also add the following information to your list.

1) Cost in Pesos. Because of the exchange rate goes up and down. Pesos will be better.
2) Location, distance, time in respect to a large city. Some of the towns you mention are close to Bogota and some are further out. State how long it takes. To see if it is worth it.
3) These events. In my case "White Water Rafting" sounds like a two day event from Bogota. Please state that.
4) What kind of cloths, extra gear, or other things you may need. Is it camera friendly? Is it girlfriend friendly?
5) Language, is it gringo friendly. Will someone who does not speak English have a problem.

Gracias para todo Carter.

Thanks,

C'mon you guys, I sense some copycating in the adventure department.
I doubt all of you actually went diving in Taganga,
and I doubt that it's very good. I went diving on San Andres
and did see two rays and a snake in two dives but other than that it was barren. And they say Taganga is worse. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Mind you I'm spoiled because I'm used to diving in the Indian Ocean.

Diving in Taganga Stevens I don't think anyone named diving as their favourite adventure activity. It was just listed as an example. I found diving in Taganga not the greatest. It is a very cheap place to get your qualifications though. If you have never been diving though its worth it just to enjoy the experience of being under water.

Best beach? The 100 yards of white sandy beach on Johnny Cay at San Andres Island. San Andres may be 750 miles North of Bogota in the Caribbean but it is my favorite Colombian place. Then Bogota and Cartagena not in any order.

Best budget lodging? Dona Flor's Gueest House in Bogota 100 meters from US Embassy.

Ecuador beach? My wife is Colombian but lived in Ecuador and she talks of some beach in Ecuaador that is ssuppossed to be quite nice but I can't recall the name of the place. Pacific beaches are never as good as the Caribbean side I believe....

Was It.... in the Departmento de Esmeralda ?? The only places I remember are Muisne and Playa Escondida. This area is hot and wet with rainstorms. Weather? Think of Cartagena then add some additional heat and humidity especialy from December to June. Lots of Colombian head to this area. Not my cup of tea. BTW be careful lots of petty theft.

San Andres just doesn't feel Colombian to me. Not that I minded while snorkeling, but it feels as though it is not part of Colombia even though most residents I met were from Cartagena and most visitors were paisas.
