Freight forwarders, shipping companies, rates, etc, for importation.

Hey all. Would anyone be so kind as to advise me on the subject of importing goods into Colombia. What freight companies have experience and history shipping from asia to here? How does the merchandise get from the coast to Bog? Who can I talk to about this? Where can I find an import agent, and what are their rates?

Thanks friends! You are, as always, helpful!

SHipping to Colombia I won't go into detail of my experiences but don't use an conventional airfreight forwarder (like DHL) as even the discounted rates are very high. Any shipment of more than 20 kilos must clear through a bonded warehouse at great expense. Single shipments should never exceed 20 kilos (42 lbs) and US$1,000 value or you will incurr extra expense (big time). COPA Airlines has a good service and routing through them using a freight forwarder will save you $$$. Other routing by air can cost you $2.50 lb (discounted) or more so consider the value and weight of what you are shipping by air.

Sociedades de itermediacion aduanera Goods from Asia come by Vessels since by plane would be too expensive. Usually companies get an acount with DHL or other companies in order to bring small and not heavy goods. Like samples.
I myself would like to get many things from Asia, an assits to main trade fairs.

For the goods to get into any Colombian port, ie, Buenaventura, Santamarta it will take at least one month since they have to do what is call the triangulation, in other words goods won´t come straith to Colombia. Sociedades de intermeciacion aduanera or Custom brokers will do all the paper work and is their duty to classifid the goods to see where do they fit to pay "gravamen and taxes".

From what I remember.. A 20 ft. container from Denmark to Bogotá was around US$ 4000 by Maersk in year 2000. I'm not sure if that was all included or just the transport. It sounds like a lot to me.
