At the beginning it is a scandal for the familly that boyfriends and girlfriends start living together without getting married. But once they do it, they are not consider "novios" anymore but "marido y mujer"(at the least in most of the cases). I think thats the difference. And there are a lot of people living like that. In the small towns, during a public party ("la caseta") it is common that a young girl disappears with the boyfriend, and next day EVERY BODY in the village knows and comments about it. Then both parents and the couple in a familly meeting decide about marriage, common low or the "dote".
"La hija de ... se salió con el hijo de...", or "el hijo de... se sacó a a la hija de... de la caseta" And this also happens in Cordoba.

Pues a los que tienen un trabajo digno, un lugar donde vivir, una pareja estable y como educar a sus hijos en Colombia si les recomiendo que se queden, pues en cualquier otro lugar al que lleguen les toca empezar de abajo a menos que vayan con un contrato de trabajo. Y si les toca aprender un nuevo idioma es peor. Ahora que hay gente que le gustaria vivir esa experiencia, pero si deben estar claros que la cosa no es facil. Todo el que emigra con un proposito, cualquiera que sea y está dispuesto a sacrificarse para conseguirlo, pues que aproveche las oportunidades que le brinde el pais a donde llegue.
GUAJI, viviendo en un pais de Europa si he notado que las cosas aca con mas complicadas para los inmigrantes, y en calidad de ilegal es mejor ni pensarlo.
PATRIACOSTA, tu tienes razon en lo que dices, pero quiza esas personas que viven esa situación tan dificil le están brindando un beneficio a su familia, quiza tienen hijos que eduacar. A lo mejor si estuvieran en Colombia trabajando igual o mas duro no los pudieran ayudar de la misma manera. Lo importante de todo es que el sacrificio valga la pena, que de una o otra manera se vean los frutos. Lo malo es cuando los familiares no valoran eso y piensan que quien les manda el dinero todos los meses se la gana facil.

Cada quien cuenta de la fiesta segun como le va en ella.
Tengo una amiga que quedó desempleada y sin conseguir nada por mas de un año, resien graduada universitaria, despues de haberse pagado universidad nocturna, viviendo con los padres mayores que no tienen pension alguna, mas un hermano casado con dos hijas, que apenas se gana el minimo , en una casa que ni es grande, ni tiene jardin y de cosa un minipatio (las tipicas viviendas de interes social). Cuando trabajaba logró que le dieran la visa de turista de EU. Decide irse y si, se quedó illegal, pero trabaja aunque no en su profesión, sino en un supermercado, y los fines de semana en un restaurante y ademas esta estudiando el idioma. En fin, trabaja como loca, pero al menos tiene para mandarle a su familia, y vive en un sitio digno, y un carro que aunque de segunda bueno, etc. Si es cierto que extraña a la familia, a los amigos, la tierra y lo que quieran, pero materialmente vive mucho mejor y a los padres no les falta comida, ni medicinas ni nada. Tendría lo mismo en Colombia? Ojala que gente como ella se pudieran legalizar para que puedan regresar a visitar y compartir con los suyos. Todos tenemos derecho a realizar nuestros sueños, y muchas veces nos toca sacrificar unas cosas por otras. Desafortunadamente no todos hemos tenido la oportunidad de lograr nuestros sueños en nuestra bella tierra y por uno u otro motivo nos ha tocado salir. Y asi como a unos nos va bien, a otros nos va regular, pero en todos lados hay que luchar! Lo ideal es que el que se va, lo haga legal, si es posible con un trabajo, pues como illegal las cosas son muy dificiles. Quien se va porque se casa con extrajnero(a) , que lo haga por amor mas que por otras razones, pues el hecho de tener a alguien al lado es una gran ventaja, y por amor cualquier sacrificio vale la pena.

de que se crece, se crece A quien no se le crece la autoestima estando con la persona que lo haga feliz a uno? no importa la nacionalidad, si es feo/bonito o enanito, lo importante es que a uno le mueva el piso y que se sienta correspondido!
No se a quien se le crece mas la autoestima, pues muchos extranjeros que conozco casados con colombianas se sienten como Platano, Benditos!
Pero lo de sentirse superior, si ya es otra cosa muy distinta.
Ah pero de que hay que andar "cuatro ojos" si es cierto, Dios mio!La que no ande pilas, le bajan el marido y de paso la autoestima...
Lo de que hay gente que nunca le hablaba a uno y que al saber que uno vive en otro pais , ahi si, nada mas pa' andar diciendo que son "amigos de fulanita que vive no se donde".
En cuanto al idioma, a penas llego a colombia cambio el CD. Uy por fin descansa mi cerebro, es mas mi marido me reclama pues a veces me olvido por completo que le tengo que traducir, menos mal y el cada vez que va aprende un poquito mas de español. No hay nada mejor que uno poder expresar lo que siente en su propio idioma! ni nada que desgaste mas que andar pensando todo el tiempo como decir las cosas. Bueno eso me pasa ahora que estoy aprendiendo nuevo idioma. Ah pero de que se me cruzan los cables se me cruzan, a veces hay palabras que no me salen en ninguno de los 3 idiomas, asi que me toca recurrir al lenguaje de las señas. Con las amigas colombianas/latinas que viven aca hablamos siempre en español a menos que estemos reunidas con los maridos que si toca usar un idioma en comun.

I have heard stpories that they DO that in Miami.
And have heard stories of people traveling BAQ-MIA carrying "queso costeño" and all the holes made by the US customs in front of their faces ... I would prefere the holes in the suitcase ;-).

As soon as they can identify u are not from Bogota , no matter if u come from another city /region in Col. they can notice ur accent and ask something so they can be sure u dont know how to get the place. But this happens in many cities in many countries in Latinamerica. In Cartagena, I have to tell to the taxi drivers all the time: hey Im not a tourist, I live here so... forget about that price...Even when Im costeña, but dif accent from cartageneros. But its the same in Mexico, Venezuela, Guatemala and so on... Even here in Europe, some drivers do manipulate the meters, so... a worldwide problem. Ah the worst, they memorize the nmbrs in the back side of the credit card when u use it to pay in the taxi and then buy in the internet... What a world...But dont worry, be happy...

bilingual kids I have a friend living in Miami for more than 5 years and has not learned english, so she speaks only spanish to the kids (02) and the husband who is also colombian. He speaks good english, but they speak spanish at home, the kids have learned how to speak english at school and now they speak to the father in english and of course the mother cant understand them, so finally she decided to start english clases. Kids speak both languages very well.

Only when the "cachacas" go to "la costa" you can hear the costeñas saying: "hey viste a esa vieja tan blanca, parece una rana platanera". "Hey si, un papel le queda poco".

After reading this post I remember my grandma who didnt like "negros", but for those "curiosities" in life she got 5(five) "yernos negros". Al que no quiere caldo se le dan dos platos...

Optional Yes it is optional and the amount depends on the service you receive and the price.
It also depends on how offen u go. Some people that go every week or so, they give X-mas presents instead. Some people dont give tips, because sometimes they only have the money for the service, but if u have some extra and you are satisfied with the service, why not a tip?. Even 1.000 pesos is appreciated by the person who has done a good job.
But offcourse if the service is not good, forget it, I change the salon.

Desi you are right about the sentence "afortunadamente fallé". Thats the problem when we try to transate literaly, sometimes it is necesary to use other words in order to get better sence in the laguange we want to translate to, like Platano did saying "Afortunadamente no pasó nada".

Anyway you gave me an A+ and that is more than what I got in school. Dont even ask me a tense name for hubiera or hubiese or any other. Verb tenses in spanish were a nightmare and lets not talk about sentence construction.
Ahh..and dont ask me to translate danish-spanish-danish, what a disaster, not only my english is decreasing , but also my spanish, so... what I am supposed to speak in the future? no idea...jiji

I am not so good for translations, but here my version:

Cuando venía a casa hoy ví un ciervo cruzando la calle. Casi me estrello contra él. Afortunadamente fallé. Si no hubiese (hubiera) fallado, no estaría aqui sentado(a) contándote (le) esta historia.

I am never sure when to use "hubiese" "hubiera" for me is the same meaning. maybe someone else can clarify about this?

contándote = informal (a ti)
contándole = formal (a usted).


Another question for native speakers: should we say : "vi un ciervo..." or "vi a un ciervo..." ?? Well I am not so good with my native spanih...

Bueno yo llegué y empecé a estudiar el idioma lo mas pronto.
Saber inglés ha sido una ventaja, pero tambien una desventaja, pues aqui la mayoria de la gente lo habla y es la opción mas facil, asi que no me veo obligada a usar el Danes, sin embargo después de varios meses ya puedo entender algo, pero me cuesta hablarlo. Por lo demas me ha sido facil adaptarme a la ciudad, pues el trasporte publico es bueno (he aprendido a leer los mapas...), no necesito carro, asi que no hay problema con lo de no saber manejar. He conocido mucha gente, pero la mayoria extranjeros porque el contacto es la escuela de idiomas, nos reunimos o salimos despues de clases, organizamos excurciones en la ciudad y visitas a los museos para entretenernos. Como llegue en pleno invierno, salia lo necesario, pues eso es lo que mas me ha pegado. No me aburria gracias al Internet que al comienzo era mi aliado inseparable...Mi esposo se encarga de llevarme a pasear los fines de semana , tambien participo en algunas actividades organizadas por colombianos aca. Nada de novelas, pues no tengo canales en español, bueno la TV no es que me atrape de a mucho, solo la veo para tratar de entender y acostumbrarme al idioma. La verdad no me he sentido aburrida, pero a veces frustrada por el tiempo que toma aprender el idioma...

Don: "Some people told me the phrase "manda huevos" is considered a bit of a groseria amoung people of the coast but can also be used between friends & loved one's with affection or in a joking manner".

Yes it is consider a bit of groseria, so some peolpe replace it by "mandas cascaras". Same meaning.

I dont know how to translate, but here are some exapmles:

If a taxidriver charges you $10.000 instead of $5.000 (which should be the price), you can say "manda huevos" or "manda cascaras" because he is charging more than expected.

Another context: If someone says: Lets go to a bar, but you pay the bill, then you can say: "mandas huevos" (something like: are you crazy? why should I pay for your drinks?).

If someone does not stop when the traffic light is red and drives too fast, then you can say: "ese man manda huevos..."

UTC also a LOT of Mototaxis in Sincelejo. It has became a problem the last few years. But trafic problem is only in downtown area, the rest of the city is quite tranquil. Sometimes they have restrictions for Mototaxis to the downtown area cause it is crazy.

Bomba Colombiche, when I was in Colombia used to prepare a similar Bomba

Instead of water half a glass of Cola Roman (or Postobon - red Cola)+ 2 alkaseltzers + 2 mejoral -trituradas- (some pople replace mejoral with aspirina). But the idea is to take it after drinking and before going to bed , so next day you will be "como nueva(o)".

But anyway el sancocho de gallina with lot of lemon. Nunca está de más.

PS. Cuando la cosa es de gravedad mi mamá usa Leche pa´ desintoxicar.
