Christinalkc comments on Chinese live in Bogota

Chinese in Bogota Yes I am still around in Bogota. Like everyone has mentioned, the Chinese are mostly Chinese restaurant owners and there are no Chinatowns here.

HK girl...Well everything here is fast and convenient too try the buses! lol. Other than that... slow!

Anyways, email me at christinalkc at yahoo.com.au if you need any information or something from a chinita's point of view.

Christinalkc comments on Colombians studying in Australia

A lot of Colombians chose to go to Australia for some reasons.

1. Visa is easier to acquire
2. You can work and study legally and can earn the school fees and expenses by working hard enough.
3. Australia is a good place to study English

Christinalkc comments on Colombians in Australia

When I was in Melbourne, I met heaps of Colombians but I have lost touch with some of them and the other half have returned to Colombia or gone to other countries.

I like the idea of someone in Sydney who can prepare Colombian food. I can't seem to find such place or service in Melbourne. The only place I could find selling South American products is in Fitzroy and those stuff cost me a fortune.

If there are more information, please do share while I'll get my friends to hook up with some of you here. Thanks a lot!!!!

Christinalkc comments on One way ticket....

No matter if you are entering with a British or Australian passport, you still need to prove that you have a return ticket from Colombia when you check in at the airport you are departing from. I remembered I got asked twice at Singapore's Changi Airport and London's Heathrow Airport when I was transitting. The Colombians do not really care but then if you would like to extend your stay in Colombia on a tourist visa, you would have to provide DAS a copy of your return ticket. However, if you have a work contract in Colombia for more than a year, then you may not need a return ticket but be sure to get your documents ready and check with your airline beforehand.

The easiest and cheapest way is to get a ticket from Avianca departing from Colombia to Caracas or Ecuador and get a refund later. I think it will cost you less than 30 bucks.

Good luck,
Christina

I am the one who needs to go to the airport to pick up a friend. So, you want me to pick you up as well? :) haha!

Christinalkc comments on POOR BUT HAPPY? WHO CAME UP WITH THIS NAME? I THINK IT IS RIDICULOUS

ColombianoX,

Even if the named changed to PoorButHappy Malaysia, I wouldn't mind it as I will take it as a compliment.

Christinalkc comments on POOR BUT HAPPY? WHO CAME UP WITH THIS NAME? I THINK IT IS RIDICULOUS

I don't think the name PoorButHappy is potraying a negative image about Colombia. In fact, I think it is an example set because it shows wealth and money is not everything. We don't need to have our pockets and bank account loaded with $$ to be happy and I guess we should learn how to live like the Colombians do. However, I do agree Colombia is not a rich country. I come from South East Asia myself and lived there almost all my life. I have travelled a bit everywhere and lived in a rich country before but then I chose to come here to Colombia anyways because the people are happy and they make me feel good although I know I may not earn as much dollars as I have before.
The name PBH does not bother me at all and should not be changed.

Christinalkc comments on Tourist visa

juz returned from a trip to DAS... not difficult at all... the people there speak english and all you need for the extension are 2 color pictures, passport, photocopy of your passport with the picture page and the page with the entrance stamp and photocopy of your air ticket to prove that you are leaving Colombia. the fee is $54.800 and you have to pay at the bank. So go to the DAS office early in the morning because you need to wait in line twice (bank and DAS) and you don't really need to go there 2 weeks in advance. You can even go on the very last day of the the expiry..but then again, going early is good!

Christinalkc comments on Poorbuthappy Get together

after reading the pros and cons.... i have a little opinion. i don't think it is a bad idea at all to organize a simple meeting over lunch or something like that. I don't come to bogota to live in fear and if i would, i won't come here at all.....

there are heaps of other places for the FARC or something like that to target foreigners like hotels, embassies and such.

yes, i agree that we have to exercise precautions and stuff but we as foreigners, we stand out wherever we go. for my case, i don't need to go to parties for foreigners to be exposed to dangers like these. the place i work is also another danger as americans come in and out there.

anyways, i am still waiting for the arrangement .... i took the risk to come to colombia and i guess i should take this risk too. living in fear is not what i want in colombia!!

Christinalkc comments on Immunizations/health

Before I came to Colombia, I was asked by the Colombian Consulate in my country to get the Yellow Fever injection... Well.... I guess it is not a bad idea to get it as it lasts for like 10 years or something. But remember, if you are plannin to get that, please do it at least 10 days before hoppin onto a plane....

Christinalkc comments on Japanese Products in Bogota?

Ooops, I juz hope that I won't get any part of my body kicked for working in this agency... I am not really part of the marketing or management team.. I am juz on the creative side which means I am only helping to produce videos for the agency. What makes my job interesting is I get to look at beautiful Colombianas from all over the country. Easy way to see different types of Colombians from different regions!

I don't get very good pay but then I don't expect much for a part time job in Bogota. At least I am getting paid more than a full time worker at the minimum wage! Well, knowing English is not a necessity here as now I am kind of forced to pick up Spanish faster in order to understand whatever the girls are saying in the videos..

Hey Emily,

I studied at Deakin University (Burwood Campus) and graduated with a BA in Media Arts (Screen Studies major). At this very moment, I am just working part time as an AV Editor for a marriage&dating agency. This is something really new to me but it is a great experience!

So, when exactly are you coming back? Kinda missed Melbourne though. :) bring some koalas here!

Christinalkc comments on Finally I am in Bogota

feamoda,

Yeah I am studying Spanish (beginner's) at the moment at Universidad Externado de Colombia and it is a great place where everyone is helpful regardless where you come from. I do agree with you that Colombia is a great place to be though you don't know anyone or speak the language but then I believe those so called barriers are just for a short time.

When I first announced my plans to go to Colombia, everyone thought I was crazy and my mom was hysteric about my decision. So, feamoda, if you really want to come, please do. Don't wait till you are too old.

Anyways, just let me know if you need any information about Bogota and at least you know you have a friend from the same country here. This is my email address (christinalkc at yahoo.com.au) and write and tell me more about you. All the best..

Ojitos en Bogota,

P/S: I have uploaded some pictures I took when I was touring around the beautiful Bogota! Enjoy!

Christinalkc comments on Any Australians visiting Colombia ?

Juanita,

Well, if you may read from my other postings, I am not an Australian but I have been in Melbourne for 2 years. And now I am in Bogota since last Thursday.

Before I made this trip, I was like your man, nervous and paranoid but come to think of it, I was silly..and I just have to laugh at myself.

Being a newbie in Bogota, it is important to have someone to be with you all the time (at least for the first few weeks), preferably local because I don't speak Spanish at all. Yesterday, I was proud of myself because I managed to ask directions on the streets and also brought a pack of cigarettes on my own. I guess I just have to open my eyes and learn the tricks of the trade on the streets!

Colombia is very different from Australia because of the political and economical situation but then hey, does that matter? I guess danger exists in every foreign country no matter where you go. An Aborigine man threatened to kill me when I was waiting for a train in Melbourne because I am an Asian and it seems that Melbourne is the most livable place in the world. Make your own judgment..

In Melbourne, I take trains and trams and never got caught in crazy traffic. Yesterday I took a bus here and the traffic was horrendous but it's a small price to pay to be able to experience this and see the beautiful side of the Colombian life!

I guess, when you are on a foreign land, all you need is to be able to adapt to new surroundings and never show other people that you are better than them. Be humble and smile always.. Colombians are the most patient beings I found out apart from Australians (Chinese is not) and they will always try to help you. so worries apart!

Okay, there you have it and remember to have him try the Chiva...I never tried it but I will one day, looks fun!!

Good luck,
Ojitos en Bogota

Christinalkc comments on Finally I am in Bogota

Updates Hola......
Let me go one by one...

Mr. Hollywood, thanks for welcoming me to Bogota. I have gone to 2 classes so far and it was great. It's almost like a private class with only 3 students including myself. My Spanish is still very poor and I hope within months, I will be able to speak and understand. I have learnt to take a bus, learnt to buy things on my own...... and it feels great!

Feamodo, it's a pleasure to find another Malaysian on this site but I must say, Colombia is a great place and I certainly do not want to bump into any druglords as i am not that interested in them. Yes I may heard of the druglords in Colombia but I guess I prefer to find out about the history of Colombia and Bogota... anyways, it is a common joke in Malaysia that when you say Colombia, the first things we think of are the drugs and the dealers. All thanks to the media manipulation. Anyways, feamodo, if you would like to come to Colombia, please do come and u will know what we have missed! And the thing is, Bogota is very much like Kuala Lumpur. Even the Centro is like the centre of Kuala Lumpur, full of buses, people and stalls on the streets. You will feel very much at home. There are some things I have never seen before in my life. It's amazing what people here can do to make a living such as selling things and performing in the middle of the streets. And the variety of fruits that I have never seen and talk about the size of the avocado!!

In short, Colombia and Bogota is not as bad as what people think and yeah I was so paranoid and nervous because of the scares and warning I was fed with. It is true is that I have to be cautious and things but I guess that's juz part of the deal whenever you step foot in a foreign country especially with no knowledge of the language. I supposed being humble, no flashy items and a smile work best!!

Last Sunday, I met up with voipcolombia aka Pedro and he was great to bring me around places. In just half a day, I have seen whole lot of Bogota such as Chorro Quevedo, Iglesia Lourdes, Chapinero, Hacienda Santa Barbara, Toldos de San Pelayo, Plaza de la concordia where I tried chicha and masato, Museso del siglo 1800 and Parque Nacional... Thanks a lot Pedro! We took a lot of pictures and I will upload them soon!

Okay, now I will improve on my Español and hope I will be able to write in it soon!!!

Ojitos en Bogota,
christina

Christinalkc comments on student visa?

depends it depends on the duration of the course and also which uni u go to. i asked about student visa for spanish courses at la javeriana and they told me that i might not need a student visa if my course is shorter than 90 days.

and if u go on a tourist visa and u wish to change ur visa to student visa, u don't need to leave colombia but u have to go to bogota to get it done. the duration of the process varies depending on ur nationality and also if you have all the documents ready.

suerte,

Translation, Endorsement and Notarized Yes, you need to have the documents translated into spanish and endorsed and notarized and certified with an apostille by the secretary of the state where it was issued.

Christinalkc comments on Big Thank You!!

argtat First of all, hello to u, argtat! Well let answer ur questions one by one.

When I revealed my plans to go to Colombia, everyone thought I was insane considering Colombia is a place where opportunities are almost non-existent for non-spanish speakers and it is not a very developed country. I have a choice to stay in Australia (richer country with heaps of employment) or remain in my country (at least my own land) but I don't see myself grow in these two places to be honest. Even the people working in the Colombian Consulate thought I was very brave and courageous to go there by myself and another word, crazy too!

My budget is very very very tight. I guess I can only afford to bring enough for a month or two's survival. I know I am taking the biggest risk in my life but who knows if it's worthwhile. That's why I am in the rush of getting a job there to support myself partially. Looks like the bridge thing is getting closer.

My Spanish sucks! Almost zero level. That's why I am planning to take the beginner's course in Universidad Externado which is a lot cheaper than Javeriana. I am not sure if I will be able to teach English at all since I have no qualification and experience but I will give it a shot. I hope I will be able to pick up Spanish fast enough in order to put myself in a better position in landing myself a job apart from teaching as I would like to stay in Bogota for some time. By the way, my profession is media and multimedia.

Don't worry about me getting crossed with your comments and curiosity. I really value it and it helps me to understand my situation and hope more two cents worth will come in.

This is my email address --- christinalkc at yahoo.com.au

Please do email me with any comments or any ideas of where I can go to or things like that. And I really do appreciate that!

Christinalkc comments on Big Thank You!!

Bank Account Yes, the bank in Australia charges AUD5 per transaction and that's a lot of money I consider. Anyways, I am no longer in Australia and I am in Malaysia now preparing and packing (a bit early haha?) I guess I will withdraw all my money from the Australian bank through the ATM in Malaysia and have it converted into USD. It is not a lot though but I will apply for a bank account once I get to Bogota as I will be obtaining a student visa. That shouldn't be any problem right?

Apart from that, I like the idea of posting advertisements in the school's notice boards and newspapers. Is it expensive to post ads in the papers? Well, I have no experience in teaching at all, just informal "friend to friend" English correction and explanation. If possible, I would like some advice about the methods and materials of English teaching.

By the way, is there any English version of El Tiempo with job search/recruitment section in Colombia? I figure my level of Spanish is so minimal that I don't think I could even understand the job scope or requirements in the jobs advertised in El Tiempo. Or is there any special bulletins/newspapers that cater to foreigners living in Colombia?

Another question is that I would like to bring my mobile phone to Bogota but I require a chip. Do you all think it is possible for me to purchase only the chip without the mobile, preferably on Prepaid Plan. Please advice. Thank you guys!!!

Chaolin,
Christina

Christinalkc comments on Big Thank You!!

I have got a back up debit card from my bank already, so no worries. I guess I am the only traveller who doesn't own a credit card nowadays :(

Caslug: I see some of ur postings and I never imagained u r an Asian too, which is cool. I thought I am the only Asian posting here. Okay, I am not sure how can I get the legal rights to stay and work in Colombia without finding an employer beforehand. For me, I will be applying for a student visa once I reached Bogota and for all I know that does not entitle me to work. Please advice. I don't mind at all working and get paid under the table as long as there is income.. I used to work illegally in Australia.

Usually what kind of jobs would pay in such a way??

Christina

Christinalkc comments on Big Thank You!!

what about a maestro/cirrus Logo This bank card from the australian bank that i have now only has this Maestro and Cirrus logo.... do u think I still can use it??

Christinalkc comments on Treatment of Black tourists from USA or England

What about Yellow? Erm..... I never been told about the racism issues in Colombia. I have been raised in a country where racism is a main issue because Malaysia consists of the Muslims (60%) Chinese (20%) and Indians (10%) Since Malaysia is a Muslim country, there are some racial discrimination against the Chinese and Indians.

Anyways, I would like to know how the Colombians (be it black or lighter skin ones) view the Asians especially the Chinese looking ones. I know there are not many Asians in Bogota but I guess I need get myself prepared in a way as I will be going there in 3 weeks.....

Christinalkc comments on Colombiana getting visa for Australia

Hi,

I am a Malaysian but I have been staying in Australia for like 2 years and I have made my Colombian friends there.

Okay, first of all, for a Colombian to enter Australia is quite difficult. Is your gf gonna stay with you for the whole four years or just for a few months? The most important thing there are looking for is proof of financial support. At least, you need AUD1000 a month and this money has to be in the account for a certain amount of time. Apart from that, you need to provide a lot of documents such as invitation and things like that.

If she wants to stay with you for the whole four years, the best way is for both of you to be married. In that way, she can enter Australia as your wife and she is able to work full time. In that case, financial support is important.

I am not quite sure if the rules have changed but for all I know that the Australian Immigration is rather strict with their rules change every July. My friend even had difficulties entering as International Student even though she had the Confirmation of Enrolment from the Australian university. Her visa was rejected once because of insufficient financial support.

You can email me if you need to know anything at christinalkc at yahoo.com.au

Thanks Harry!!! Thank you very much for the valuable info on student visa application in Bogota. I guess I am half way there. I have so far got 70% of the documents they asked for applying for a student visa. I am just waiting for the Certificate of Good Conduct from the Malaysian government which needed to be translated, endorsed and notarized. After that... I am off!!!! :)

Christinalkc comments on Mas o menos, cuanto vale vivir en Colombia al mes...?

De nada, Kiwi Well, what i suggest is go to the Colombian Consulate in your country and enquire about procedures in getting a student visa and the sort of documents required. They will help you in providing the relevant information in obtaining them. So no worries! From what I have found out, the visa costs around $40-$45

I'll be taking the Beginner's course but then it depends on my test results. If they find me qualified to do the Intermediate level, they will put me in straight away but I doubt it :( My Spanish is almost non existent!

The reason I am goin to Colombia is because I have heard so much about that country and I used to stay with Colombians when I was studyin in Melbourne, Australia. I was pretty much impressed with the language and thought it would be an advantage for me to learn it and I figured out the best way to do it is to go to a country that speaks the language. Apart from that, Colombia is cheaper in terms of living expenses and such compared to other Spanish speaking countries.

Well, at the moment, I am preparing and acquiring all the information that I need before I fly off there, so if you have anything you need to do, please feel free to ask ok?

Take care,
Christina (christinalkc at yahoo.com.au)

Christinalkc comments on Mas o menos, cuanto vale vivir en Colombia al mes...?

student visa kiwi,

i'll be going to bogota to study spanish sometime this month and like you, I will have to go there and sit for a placement test before deciding which level I should go into. there are some things i suggest that you should get ready with for student visa application before boarding your plane.
1. 3pcs 2"X 2" passport pics
2. Certificate of Good Conduct (police clearance cert)within the last 6 months, translated into Spanish. Must be notarized and certified with an Apostille from the Secretary of the State where it was issued.
3. Proof of Financial Solvency.
4. other documents will be provided by the institute

Student Visa Hi all ( again!),

I have look into university applications such as La Javeriana and Universidad Externado and none of them would take applications from overseas which means I will have to be there in person to make the application and payments.

This is rather hard for me as I will have to go to Colombia without any certainty that I would get to study there and also since I am a Malaysian, I could only enter Colombia without a visa for only a month. I don't think that's enough time at all for me have all these settled for all I know the student visa will take about 2 weeks to be processed for non-US citizens.

What else can I do from here? I might have a probability that my visa application may be denied for some financial situation. And I don't want to return to my country (more than 27hrs flight) without getting what I want.

Please advice,
Christina

Is this uni as good as La Javeriana? Are there lotsa foreigners there? Anyone can tell me where's the location of the uni? Geez, I am so worried if I make the bad choice.

Christinalkc comments on A Business in Colombia

How about this? Hey all,

Okay, I juz got back from Melbourne Australia and sadly enough, instead of mixing with Australians there, my circle of friends are Colombians.

Being in a foreign land like Australia, it is almost impossible for South Americans to find food or groceries from their homelands and they have to resort to some other kind of food which is cheap and nice.

I used to stay with a few Colombians and of course I do buy Asian groceries such as Instant Noodles. One day, I had my my amigos to try the noodles which I bought and guess what, they love it! And from then onwards, it became a regular home cooked fast food them. The noodles come in two forms, with soup and without soup. It takes only 3 minutes to cook and it is yummy. I asked my Colombian friends if this kind of product is sold in Colombia and they answered me "We wished!" The noodles in Australia, where the imported Asian is more expensive, are sold about 50 cents.

I guess it is a good idea to get that sort of stuff into this beautiful country as it is cheap and fast and nice.... all in One!

Another business would be... Japanese food which I will post it later.

Christinalkc comments on Spanish Classes?

Hi Diana,

I haven't lived or living in Bogota but I am planning to go just like you. I don't think the idea is insane (well, my friends thought so too) if you have good plannings and knowing what you are gonna do there. Anyways, I am a Malaysian girl, aged 24, and I guess the insane bit is that I know nobody there and don't speak the language. I am currently researching for universities around Bogota to take Beginner's Espanol course sometime in September or October. I see you speak some Espanol, which is way better than me .

Anyhow, once I have got enough information from La Javeriana and La Nacional, I will share with you and then you can make your own decision.

All the best..chao,

Dressing code Well teppar,

Thanks a lot for the information... Since Melbourne is famous for having four seasons a day, we have a variety of clothing every day. During winter, we wear a lot of trenchcoats and knee length boots with scarves and whatever. During spring and fall, we wear a lot of long sleeve tops and sometimes short sleeves with jackets (furs r quite popular in Melbourne) and summer is the best... and I guess i don't have to explain that...a lot of thongs and sandals!

Chao,
Christina

Christinalkc comments on Need Assistance

Oh well, seems it is not appropriate to wear the sort of clothes I wear while I was in Australia. Anyhow, I read the post from Australia girl in Cartagena. I didn't know that I would need more than USD500 to spend a month. I thought I could do fairly less than that. I am that sort of person who doesn't eat or spend much. Probably my money will go to rent and transportation. I was told that I would need around $350 a month to live moderately in Bogota, excluding my school fees.... Any comments?

The weather condition Hi all again,

I am wondering how's the weather condition in Bogota? I know it is pretty cool all year round because of the altitude but is it humid? I just returned to Malaysia but then I am suffering a bad case of skin allergies because of the combination of heat and high humidity and also haze.

Also, how do the girls of my age (24) dress up there? I know I am an alien there but I don't want to be an alien from another galaxy or century! Please advice! :)

Re:Universidad Yo Shaz (can I call u that?)

I have written to both La Nacional and Externado last Friday and I suppose I will have to wait for their reply as I know Monday is a public holiday in Colombia. I just pray that they will reply me as soon as possible.

Well, I don't mind class cancellations as long as the classes will be replaced indefinitely so the fees I paid for will not go down the drain. Hmm.... speaking of demonstration, I have taken part in the state level demonstration in Melbourne during the Anti-War campaign against the government's decision to send troops to Iraq. But anyhow, I don't think I have the guts to stand on the frontline and throw stuff... I am a coward shit! LOL

Where is the location of the universiy may I ask? Is it far away?

Thanks mate,
