cgs242 comments on Trying to Understand

Lessons learned for the future Some lessons learned for your friend...

If a person wants clear and direct feedback from the beginning, then he/she must ask the correct direct/concise questions to ellicit clear and direct feedback from the start.

As far as teachers trying to date current/active students in the united states, obviously that is not good. The teacher is risking his job and reputation.

Arthur Brode also hit the nail on the head regarding latinas adopting the way of some gringas being complicated and flaky, very funny but oh, so true.

cgs242 comments on Altitude

most likely diarrhea Good point, more likely to get struck by diarrhea than sever altitude sickness at a low 3000 feet altitude.

Don't forget to pack the immodium AD, i got blindsided with some serious runs twice on my medellin trip.

Those tablets saved me.

Altitude Luckily Cali is only 3000 feet above sea level.

Can't say for sure, everybodies bodies reacts differently to change in altitude. Some don't notice it, some feel a little lethargic.

Being in good physical condition helps a lot. I mean, if you do a lot of aerbic exercise, running, swimming, then that will help your body not feel stresses out when you are at altitude.

WHen I was in Cali, I did feel a little winded when I was walking up and down some of the city streets which can be very hilly.

I know this is a colombia board, but, When I first used to travel to San Jose, costa rica which is 4000 feet above sea level, i used to feel very lethargic and sometimes get mild headaches (but I was out of shape back then) As I got in better physical shape, I was not affected by the altitude.

cerro nutibarra The little mountain in the center of medellin you refer to is cerro nutibarra, it is also where pueblito paisa is, a model of an antioquian town.

C'mon, give those hills near el poblado in the oriental side(the east) more credit, those are some towering mountains that almost go up into the clouds.

have I just spent some time in Medellin and have spent some time in Cali too.

how much traveling have you done in latin america ?

staying low key and very respectful of other people's culture and customs is always a good idea.

the second you open your mouth, the locals will notice you are not from colombia, but, that is fine and ok, becuase medellin gets its fair share of foreigners that have either vacationed or have moved to colombia.

will you be a celebrity in medellin, honestly, well, on one hand they will notice you are a foreigner, but, I think not a celebrity. Why do I think this ?

becuase Medellin is a very modern, rich, clean city and the paisas are educated and beautiful people. Just becuase we are gringos and look gringo doesn't mean squat to them, although some of the paisas like to practice their english. obviously, There are lots of rich and wealthy colombian men and upper class colombian men living in medellin, those are the guys live that live lifestyles similar to celebrities...they are the highest ones on the food chain, so to speak.

my point is, any outsider will be first noticed as a foreigner, but not as a celebrity.

sorry, can't recommend any books or videos. But if you follow you girlfriemd, you could probably write your own book after 2 years of living there.

Fish Kinda looks like a tilapia, not sure though. Tasty fish that has lots of white meat and a mild taste to it. Very popular around the world.

cgs242 comments on In Colombia, do the Colombian men always have to pay tab?

sounds like Sounds like your lady friend is inviting her buddies to take advantage of you.

Question: What type of 'real friends' would invite other friends along and run a big tab on you ?

Answer: Find some new lady friends or get used to dropping 160k everytime you dine out.

Good Luck.

Cafe Mystique is located a couple blocks from the Miami Int'l Airport. It is a latin nightclub.

One of my favorite salsa bands... Some of my favorite songs from this band which originated from Cali are:

Cali Aji
Cali Pachanguero
La negra no quiere
una aventura
duele mas

When I dance and listen to these songs, it makes me feel like I am back in Cali partying.

cgs242 comments on Salsa in Medellin & an etiquette question

Salsa Sorry, I can't answer your question on the Medellin salsa club scene, but..

I am an intermediate level salsero having taken many classes in Miami.
Let me tell you that in Colombia, the style of salsa they dance is a little different than NY style or Casino style.

Cali, not Medellin, is the capital of salsa in Colombia. I was in Cali a couple months ago and can attest to the fact that the Calenas and calenos really love listening and dancing to salsa music.

In Cali, there are many radio stations and nightclubs that cater to the salsero. There are also many salsa schools in Cali as compared to other parts of Colombia. There are many famous salsa bands that have come from Cali.

check out this salsa web page which has info on the scene in Cali:
http://www.salsapower.com/cities/colombia_cali.htm

according to this other webpage, barranquilla has many clubs to dance salsa in:

http://cityguides.salsaweb.com/colombia/colombia.htm

Brians does make a good point in the fact that serious salsa dancers know that a guy dancing with a woman has nothing to do with "hooking up". They dance merely for the fun and dancing.

On the other hand, an innocent non-salsero in the clubs might perceive a guy asking women to dance as the guy trying to "put the moves on a woman". That is where you might run into problems and the guys might get offended.

Be careful who you approach and stick to approaching the single ladies becuase most of the demographics of people in a nightclub are the casual non salsero type where you might get into an altercation.

Why ? GIB, Curious as to why you would think I am Colombian ? I actually think its funny that you think this.

In fact I was born in the USA and spent my entire life in the USA.

I wrote the post mainly becuase I see some guys basically conceding lots of things to women, with the thinking that if they give more money, bend over backwards, kiss more a** and let the women control them , then the women will love them more...

That is far from the truth. It actually makes me wanna puke when I see guys do this, but this is just my 43 pesos worth.

We don't work for women This is my first post here and I had to respond to the post that says we work for women and they get it all sooner or later.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion, No disrespect towards anybody but I will share my opinion.

This is the kind of mentality that has made america the most p***y whipped country on the planet. Guys putting women on pedestals and rolling out the red carpet and spending-spending-spending and relenquishing all sorts of rights towards women. Jesus christ, guys, grab your nuts and be a man.

I don't work for my lady friends, nor for my novia nor for my wife.

The only women entitled to my money is if I die, and that goes to my father, sister and my mom.

First off, If I was the guy in the liquor store, I would of said I will buy whatever I want to buy, if you(ladyfriend) want that bottle of 70k pesos scotch, then you buy it. If the cashier decided to hand the money to the amiga, then I would have snatched the money out of her hand and said, thats my change.
