Colombia: A culture of violence?

For years we have refused to consider the possibility of Colombian culture as one of violence. I have heard many times the argument against this position: "Colombia's culture has nothing to do with violence. Its a culture tha ...

Colombian Couples giving birth in the USA

I was browsing through El Tiempo just a moment ago, and came across a rather interesting article: There is a website offering Colombian couples the opportunity to travel to the US and have their babies on American soil so that the babies can obtain the American citizenship. The cost is approximately 8000 USD and although it includes hospital expenses and medical fees, it does not cover complications. In addition, the article mentions the fact that in case the baby is born sick and parents can ...

Liberalism and Socialism

Seeing as our political debates seem to grow increasingly futile as a result of concept confusion, I have decided to share some basic definitions which hopefully will enrich debate. First of all, liberalism and socialism are opposing creeds. I know Fox news cannot tell the difference, but hopefully us at PBH can. So what is a liberal then? A liberal, is not some jackass with little moral values, maybe in church but not in politics or economics. A liberal is actually a person who believes in ...

The rise of the cocaine tourist.

The rise of the cocaine tourist Colombia is emerging from its troubled past to become one of the hottest destinations in South America. But for a growing minority, its most famous product is becoming the main draw, says Vicky Baker guardian.co.uk, Tuesday April 1 2008 Article history Some tourists are still drawn to Colombia's cocaine reputation. "I've lost weight since I've been in Colombia. It must be all the drugs," says the American backpacker, loudly, seeming to put special empha ...

Advice on public transport.

I know this is a pain and people must have read about it over and over but if youre coming to bogota and taking buses or transmilenio dont take anything you arent willing to lose with you. I had never gotten mugged before, and everytime someone said such and such got mugged i thought they were just dumb. I was wrong and got mugged, lost ipod and it is as unpleasant as you can possibly imagine. I guess it couldve been " a lot worse" but still, there is no need to go through that. Enough said, enj ...

Fruit names.

So I am aware all fruits are called something different depending on the region, like Sandia and Patilla, are they the same thing or is it just me? On the other hand, I have been looking for cranberries but I am not sure of the name in Spanish, I looked it up on the net and its apparently called "arandano" but I asked the maid and she hasnt got a clue of what that is. So please if someone knows what the colombian name for cranberry is and where can I get it (i want the fruit, not jam or sauce or ...

Can someone explain why cant ppl say no?

This is something ive known for ages, yet it hasnt bothered me nearly as much as it does now, yes I might need some self control, breathing lessons but thats not the point. Why is it that people here always say yes, even when they want to say no? and if you throw an outright no they get a little bit offended...I am having a hard time with this one. I hate planning weekends out in advance and get a couple of "I changed my mind"s a little bit too late! ONE more thing, you might as well think its m ...

Clubbing in Bogogta

I have been clubbing in Bogota quite a lot, the nightlife is great and most people are very friendly. However, after a couple of years I have noticed I havent seen any RnB clubs or clubs playing 80's music. Sometimes Im in the mood for that kind of stuff but seems like finding these kind of clubs is a little bit complicated all I find is Reggaeton and Musica pa planchar in Parque de la 93 or Chía. Ive tried the EsKape guide but couldnt find anything.
If you know of a nice place to go clu ...
