Cerealkiller comments on MUST SEE's in BOGOTA?

try and visit monserrate at night though. The views of the city are spectacular and you can have a romantic dinner for two at Casa San Isidro, reservations used to be a must but I don't know if that is still the case.

Cerealkiller comments on Colombian cultural differences

dluzdelsol, the difference between small town colombian and a city colombian is abismal. Everything, from the way they talk, to they way they dress, to the food they eat is different. It's like two different worlds. I find it funny that you actually mentioned the saying hello to strangers on the street...that does not happen in Colombia and NEVER happens in England (unless you live in one of those towns where everyone is everyone else's cousin). I used to find it a bit strange, especially when you just say hello and keep walking... if I bother to say hello to someone I don't know its usually to ask for directions or to strike up a conversation. But that little cultural difference is spot on.

Cerealkiller comments on

well dbldareu, then I will have to speak for myself. Whoever thinks that my number is a preamble to getting in my pants is in for a huge disappointment. I like going out, drinking and making friends... I obviously need to know who they are and what they do before I give away my digits, but a phone number has never been a big deal for me, I can always just not answer.

Cerealkiller comments on

Hmm I dont think that just because some girl gives you her number it means she wants to date, have sex etc etc. I think Colombians are just really laid back, I have given my number to a crapload of people I've met at parties, dinners, while on holiday etc etc. And I am in a very stable and fulfilling relationship, I just genuinely enjoy meeting people, grabbing drinks, making friends and networking. If the person is single I try to introduce them to other people and I know and if the person is new to the city I like to suggest nice places to visit. This is not just a "colombian thing". Most of my friends (Colombians, English, Americans etc) do the same thing when we are out for drinks, and we have met really interesting people. Just to emphasize my point, I have never cheated on my partner and to be honest, the thought of cheating and going through all that drama isn't all that appealing.

Cerealkiller comments on Lo Que Más Les Molesta A Los Colombianos

If she was really that desperate she'd cancel telmex and hire something else. There is no excuse for treating a poor bastard who works in a call centre the way she did. How can this idiot expect good service or help when she is yelling like a banshee and cursing like a sailor? I wouldn't have helped her either. There is always a way to solve things in Colombia and getting pissed off is really not an option. I used to have the same problem with my Internet Provider back in Colombia and all you have to do is be polite but firm, if a visit has been scheduled then you call on the day and confirm... I understand its not supposed to be like that in the first place, but if you want things done in Colombia you have to learn how to nag in an appropriate fashion.

Cerealkiller comments on Lo Que Más Les Molesta A Los Colombianos

hahaha, that's priceless. Stupid bitch, maybe poor Patricia had an hot cyberdate with her gringo and couldn't log on. I love how the cable guy responds to her wanting to kill someone at cablenet "bueno, eso ya seria su responsabilidad"... Oh man, I would've had a field day had I been that guy.

Cerealkiller comments on Example of how they rob you in La Candelaria Bogota

There are plenty of nice places worth visiting in/ around La Candelaria. I love going to casa de la moneda, biblioteca Luis Angel Arango and that French boulangerie round the corner. Also, some of the restaurants in La Macarena/ Candelaria area are amazing and attract a very upscale crowd. However, basic safety precautions must be taken. I for one don't understand why would anyone stay in La Candelaria and party in Zona Rosa? or go out in the middle of the night like that... I don't believe hostel managers keep this a secret anyway. My family and I used to go to Hotel de la Opera on thursdays for onces and jazz on the rooftop. One evening, as we drove back home a fight broke out and all of a sudden someone started shooting, it was horrifying. I don't think my parents returned downtown after that one. I, on the other hand, had to go back everyday in order to go to uni. I made some rather "influential" friendships downtown, Id buy them cafe con leche and croissant from Oma in the morning and they would walk me to the parking lot at night. Never got mugged walking around the area (only got mugged on a bus, once and in front of everyone. No one said anything.)

Cerealkiller comments on Colombians and cold showers

I only took cold showers when i read on a pro ana site that it helps you burn more calories. My new habit lasted maybe two days, I take *hot* showers when in warm places as well. I cannot fathom a cold shower and having grown up in Colombia I never bumped into homes/ hotels without hot water. I am familiar with electric showers though, but the poor pressure means you have to use more water to get the job done.

Cerealkiller comments on Cultural Problems with the Inlaws and babies involved...

This should be an example to those who are planning on marrying their colombian gf. Guys, honestly, you are not just marrying her beautiful skin and plump round ass...She comes with values which may or may not be waay different from your own, and a family... As for the poster, talk to your partner, tell her how you feel and be firm if you feel strongly about it. Move to a house away from your in laws neighbourhood, or consider moving to a different city. Also, if you feel they are bullying your daughter, stop them, your job as a father is to protect your child... who cares if you're hurting their feelings? As for taking kids to the park, hell I don't blame them. Parks in Colombia are dirty and very dangerous for a child. I have seen broken bottles, condoms, needles and people don't clean after their dogs.

Cerealkiller comments on Brighton - Its just like Cartagena

That girl must have been hitting the pipe big time. You cannot compare CTG to Brighton... I find CTG slightly more bearable, the thought of living in Brighton gives me the creeps.

Cerealkiller comments on What spirits do you like to drink?

Anything except Aguardiente, Tequila and Sambucca

Cerealkiller comments on How long have you been with your Colombiana/no

6.5 years, and I don't see it ending anytime soon.

Cerealkiller comments on kat1, What in the world is going on in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

Billy I agree with you 100% if you do not respect your host culture then you should leave. I don't know how to make myself more clear regarding my comment. Some people on this forum believe that just because someone is born outside the UK they should not be eligible to state aid. I happen to disagree, I think receiving government aid -TEMPORARILY- can really be a huge help to anyone who is an unfortunate situation foreign or national. I just don't believe in perpetuating a cycle of poverty within a non-british underclass just because they are non British. So that explained I move on to my comment, benefits IMO should be allocated according to results (those kids who get better grades in school should get more money than truants, single parent families who are working part time jobs should get more than those who don't work, people who volunteer while actively seeking employment should get money too etc etc). If I had two families: One british who was born and raised in england, did not have jobs, did not want jobs, refused to go to school etc. and one foreign family from (insert any nation or occuppied territory in the world) who worked part time, enrolled in english classes, had their kids in school etc etc. I would choose to help the foreign family. IF -on the other hand- the foreign family had no interest other than to milk the system, got money, a nice house in a nice area while British family tries to make ends meet and provide for their children through their work then Id choose the British family. Now if both families are in a simillar situation I'd help both, even if that means I must pay higher taxes. But I would not choose to help one over the other on the basis of their nationality. I would not rank nationality that high up on my list of hypothetical requirements. Make of that what you will.

Cerealkiller comments on kat1, What in the world is going on in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

Billy, there was a huge story on one of Britain's rags. It was about a family of brits who have never worked in their lives -that was three generations of the same family- living in a government subsdised flat, owned 4 computers, and wanted a 10 bedroom house from the government because their teenage daughters are pregnant (and god forbid they get jobs). http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-541598/Meet-families-ones-worked-THREE-generations--dont-care.html Another highly publicized case, was that of a family too busy getting thei faces stuffed to work. They apply to the jobs they want but cannot be bothered to work as cleaners because its not very glamorous. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1164232/They-weigh-80-stone-claim-thousands-benefits--work-Who-blame-Anyone-themselves.html I am not saying all poor british families are like that at all, but I do believe people need to keep things into perspective. The problem is not just "Immigrants on the dole", that I think is a very lame excuse. The problem is people are given everything and not expected to give back in return, because these people are so convinced in their heads that this is what they're entitled to. I did not and have never put down british workers, I was refferring to a particular case and I know Kalder knew full well this was what I meant.

Cerealkiller comments on kat1, What in the world is going on in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

"You did make a comparison. Between the allegedly virtuous Somalians and the supposedly feckless blue-collar British. A juxtaposition so polemical, I'm lead to wonder what your experience of either constituency actually is." PLEASE!!! I never said all Somalis were virtuous and Brits just a mere waste of space, do not put in my mouth words I have never said. If it helps you fuel your xenophobia then fair enough, look for excuses somewhere else. If you cannot tell the difference between an exageration to show a point and someone's actual position regarding the issue then too bad. You have chosen to pick on the somali issue without even reading what I wrote -"Somali/ Colombian"- just to emphasize of the fact that they're foreign, I could have said Polish / Latvian/ Pakistani, same difference. I am definitely not one judge people based on nationality, but you clearly are. I must be awful for you to live in London, full of us untermenschen non brits. You're right, I do not live in a council estate in Hackney or Haringey, nor I live in a detached property in Hampstead or Kensington. But I have had the chance to meet people from all walks of life and remote parts of the world who live and work in London, and who want just the same thing Brits do (the horror!!!), a comfotable and stable life that will allowe them to provide for their families...

Cerealkiller comments on kat1, What in the world is going on in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

No I am not making any comparisons, I believe I have made my point clear: People take advantage of the benefits system regardless of their nationality, the Somali/Colombian family vs the Fat arsed British one was a mere illustration. I don't see the need to scapegoat immigrants and blame us for everything thats wrong with this country. In addition, I don't see 1) how or why would rational capitalist nation waste their resources on lost causes (again, regardless of their nationality), or how would any decent ethical rational person defend those who are born with all the opportunities this country offers yet remain a sad waste of space. What I believe this country needs is a strict set of rules: Requiring these people to actively seek employment or volunteer locally, verifying that those who are in public housing really cannot afford rent privately, and making sure that their children are in school. If they can't comply with those requirements then too bad, they can go and stay with relatives (in the case of British families) or be sent to their country (in case of foreigners).

Cerealkiller comments on kat1, What in the world is going on in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

so 11% of public housing goes to foreign born citizens...somehow that does not translate into "preferential treatment" to me... especially taking into account that 11% of Britain is in fact foreign born. I do believe, however, that there should be tighter regulation when it comes to public housing allocation, there are families who believe they are entitled to these benefits and should not work if they choose not to just because they're British, and that is just wrong. And there are foreign born families who just chill out at the expense of benefits because the life they lead in the UK is comfortable enough to kill any glimpse of ambition. I am not British, my partner is not British we both work hard pay 40% of our salaries in taxes. If i were to allocate my tax money, Id much rather give it to a Somali / Colombian family where the father is a cleaner, the mother a part time waitress and the children go to beauty school than an English family who is too fat to work, or too busy watching east enders to clean up the pigstye they live in (as seen on the Daily Mail, I read rags from time to time -nothing beats their ha ha factor). I recall reading a very long report which revealed that in North East London -Dagenham to be more precise- children from poor Eastern European families did better at school than their english counterparts and were taking more apprenticeships as plumbers, electricians, builders etc than english school leavers -who were not precisely off to uni, but too busy joining gangs and impregnating girls. So it is not all "immigrants are leeches and the poor blue collar british worker a victim..." I am not a government fan, but I am a pragmatic person and if I were distributing benefits, id probably think about it in terms of investment , who is more likely to break the poverty cycle? who is more likely to do better at school? who is more likely to give me a doctor or a teacher instead of a serial rapist or a parent of more benefit dependent creatures...

Cerealkiller comments on

The Welsh are generally very friendly, nice and broadminded -except when it comes to the English-. The Welsh landscape is something not to be missed, its a beautiful country. Their cities are a bit shitty, but most british cities are -especially when compared to London.

Cerealkiller comments on Cutié's actions hurt many of his followers

How is that hurting the catholic faith? Who ever wrote that article forgets that what really hurts the church is not priests coming forward and being upfront when caught red handed, but rather those who bone little boys, don't accept responsibility and then say it was a "misunderstanding"... Screw the catholic church and their hypocrisy.

Cerealkiller comments on Marriage Agencies

Hmm I am very much against marriage agencies. IMO if you cant get off your fat arse and meet people without having to hide behind a computer screen, then you probably deserve to be alone. If you want a Colombiana then go down there and let love/sex/infatuation surprise you. Humans have been doing that for the longest time...

Cerealkiller comments on Recent Spa Experience? Need to find Colombian hotel/spa for that special someone.

the spa at hotel santa clara in cartagena is very good. I went for a facial, massage and waxing and I have no complaints regarding the service and treatments.

Cerealkiller comments on

he's got a pulse and I havent beaten him. Pow wow, again you fail to get the analogy... or just enjoy ridiculing me. Some men think that in order to have a relationship worth keeping you must fight for it, deal with issues and work hard to make things work for both. Truth is, if you -as a couple- dont work from the get go then why force things? Its like forcing a friendship -it doesn't happen- The best relationships are those which just work... life is too short for drama.

Cerealkiller comments on más que amigas, casi hermanas

After reading the article i realised I had felt anger, sadness and amusement. All at the same time.

Cerealkiller comments on

I am not sure where to start addressing this issue. My partner and I come from completely different backgrounds, he is the epitome of a midwestern American (white, hardcore protestant, divorced parents, monolingual) and I am a mutt (parents from all over the place, jewish and catholic, technically a bastard child, trilingual...etc). He likes classical music, I think Air on the G-string is a dirty hip hop song. I enjoy drinking and partying his idea of fun is staying in watching Battlestar Galactica. He is slow to anger and forgets about it within 20 minutes, I am slow to anger and never speak to that person again... We have never had a fight in 6 years. So no, its not a cultural thing... you're just not meant to be. I dont even know why some people have to reeeeeally try to make things work. IMO relationships are like shoes, if they're comfy, fit well and go with your stuff then they're a keeper, otherwise I dont see the need to even bother.

Cerealkiller comments on Your idea of the most beautiful thing about Colombia.......??

and I am supposed to laugh? or just infer that you hate pisco?

Cerealkiller comments on French man murdered in Medellin

It could be exact same wording or same intention. But that doesn't make any difference to this particular case, as the government is claiming they are different because the court won't rule exequibilidad if one of the drafts has been denied.

Cerealkiller comments on Your idea of the most beautiful thing about Colombia.......??

hahaha billy, you're right on that one... but then again why would I mention cheap and plentiful alcohol that I cannot even smell as my idea of the most beautiful thing in Colombia? I don't have any problems with Club Colombia either, in fact, I quite enjoy it :)

Cerealkiller comments on French man murdered in Medellin

"Presenting the same proposal despite of it being denied contitutes a violation of Colombian law -in the government's defence though," Is this, if it indeed is a fact, meant to be a perpetual moratorium on bringing up again, or only for a limited and defined period? Can you post this passage of the constitution?" Im afraid I was not clear previosly. There It is no perpetual moratorium, but it is illegal to go to stage two without having passed stage I. A proposal was presented to Comision Primera and rejected. This proposal was then taken to Senate, where Uribe has the majority and it passed as a referendum. In terms of the principle of continuity you cannot present the same proposal in a chamber when it has already been denied in the other one, I could look that up in the constitution, but something tells me you know I dont need to prove this -it just makes sense-. So what is happening now is senate has just changed one word: ejercido to elegido and claim they're completely different proposals. You might argue that if one word is different then the whole thing is, but the changed text has not been presented to the other chamber so both chambers are evaluating two different documents which is still not legal. So in short, if you have a document denied in one chamber and still push it to the other one you are violating the principle of debate continuity and not following the established process (which is also not recognizing the legitimacy of that part of the legislative branch). And if you present two different texts to both chambers then you are pretty much doing the same thing, even if both texts are given the go ahead....

Cerealkiller comments on Your idea of the most beautiful thing about Colombia.......??

hmmm thats debatable :P I love going to cocktail bars in Colombia though. That said, cheap alcohol in colombia is mainly aguardiente and rum, which I don't drink at all. However, beer afternoons at BBC or Corral Gourmet are pretty much my idea of heaven, but beer and otherwise expensive alcohol is surprisingly cheap in London...not to mention the wide selection... I have yet to find some high quality peruvian pisco in London.

Cerealkiller comments on French man murdered in Medellin

"The bottom line is that Uribe is, in fact, serving term two. It may be illegal or immoral or whatever, but it is." I agree. It is what it is. And according to Colombian law it is not legal, I am not making it up -the constitution is VERY clear in that respect-. I don't think its really that open to interpretation, either something is legal or not. Do I like Uribe running for a third term? No, I don't. But I need to clarify it has nothing to do with the fact that it is illegal... I am pretty positive all of us support at least one illegal practice, while acknowledging it is illegal. I just don't understand why supporting Uribe's re re-election while acknowledging the lack of transparency and adherence to existing laws is such a big deal... I think it is the hypocrisy of it all what pisses me off.

Cerealkiller comments on Your idea of the most beautiful thing about Colombia.......??

Fruits and Veggies lasting for over 3 days. Random "piques" while driving on Bogota's circunvalar. 5 bedroom/ 4 bathroom flats being the rule, not some upper class excentricity. Having a nanny, and trusting that she will fall in love with the little monster -as opposed to having to CCTV you entire house to keep the nanny from mistreating, abusing and neglecting the creature. Everyone being as hypochondriac and disease averse as I am.

Cerealkiller comments on French man murdered in Medellin

"billyb says What rules were stretched? Colombia had a referendum and amended the constitution per the constitution's own prescribed proceedures, like the US has amended it's own constitution more than a score of times. If you disagree with the change, that is one thing, that would simply be a matter of opinion, but to say that it was against the rules would be incorrect." Actually according to the legal principle of consecutividad, this referendum was not a product of the constitution's prescribed procedures. This same proposal was presented before the comision primera and denied. Presenting the same proposal despite of it being denied contitutes a violation of Colombian law -in the government's defence though, Colombia is one of those countries in which laws are meant to be broken- but in contrast to what you've just said, it is still illegal. In addition, the Consitutional Court has been clear in that a presidential period of over 8 years would incur in a subsitution of the current contitution, not at ammendment... which as you may already know, is not legal. Hence, the constitutional court has been deemed "guerrillera" - as opposed to independent- and unfit to produce a fair judgement -as opposed to inconvenient-. The figure of the referendum has been used to legitimize this decision as truly democratic. But democratic and legal are not the same. I am not going to argue that most of those who vote in Colombia would vote for Uribe, and that is their decision to make, but the process by which the government is getting those changes made is illegal under this constitution.

Cerealkiller comments on They just murdered a muchacho in front of Consumo like 15 minutes ago

Cerealkiller comments on Acid Reflux - Lanzoprazol/Omeprazol

Well if youre being monitored by a gastroenterologist and getting endoscopies regularly then great, that probably works for you. Taking PPIs for long periods of time makes you more susceptible to C.D amongst other infections. I get endoscopies every year or so, take antiacids (gaviscon, rennie) when i start feeling heart burn and only take PPIs when it gets reeeeally bad. My doctor in Colombia advices against omeprazole for long periods of time, so does my GP in the UK and so does my partner... funny how three doctors from 3 different countries are in agreement. I am not a Physician but that makes sense to me, and even if it were just a risk Id probably still not take it over the years. Dairy products are high in protein and calcium so more acid is needed in order to break it down properly. Milk provides short term relief but it tends to get waaay worse within 20 mins or so. I try to avoid dairy products, caffeine, white wine, dont eat anything fried or left overs.

Cerealkiller comments on Acid Reflux - Lanzoprazol/Omeprazol

I have hiatal hernia as well. Sometimes when my reflux gets really bad (If ive been drinking wine or eating dairy products) I take omeprazol but I NEVER take it for more than a week. Proton pump inhibitors reduce the amount of gastric acid produced and gastric acid not only breaks down food but protects your stomach from infections. Taking PPIs for over two weeks is a very dumb idea.

Cerealkiller comments on anyone here with trilingual kids???

Hmm I did three languages as a child and I am still fluent in all 3 to this day. Being bi-trulingual at an early age certainly gives you an advantage as learning languages is just a lot easier. I am now taking French and will enroll in business Mandarin this fall... so far, no nasty mess ups.

Cerealkiller comments on What is the overall perception about haggling in Colombia?

Ive only haggled in mercado de las pulgas... or the street. I can not imagine haggling in Pomona, Exito or any chain clothes store... maybe the credit crunch has hit hard?

Cerealkiller comments on

I think Pastrana wasn't the greatest president of Colombia in terms of security. However, his approach on foreign policy was FAR FAR FAR superior than Uribe's - who spent 6 years giving jobs to the most incompetent idiots out there. The first time I met pastrana was on a school trip when he was Mayor of Bogota, I must have been very very young because its one of my earliest childhood memories. I went to school with this daughter Laura did, and some of her friends from Babson are very good friends of mine, I can say they are all extremely nice and friendly people.

Cerealkiller comments on Gringo Price or Gringo Ego?

try freaking Marrakech... Colombia is an honest, transparent, non gringo pricing country compared to Morocco. The thought of bargaining around the souks still upsets me.

Cerealkiller comments on Conclusion of the "Are you happy in Colombia?" post

no criticising is fine... everybody welcomes a constructive critique, but dissing is a different issue, if you diss and insult and offend then you'd expect others to get mad... and its not a colombian thing....its common sense.

Cerealkiller comments on Colombia tuvo un presidente negro, pero la historia se encargó de 'blanquearlo'

Half black and half indian? hahahah Bolivar was a criollo, simon is right on the money.

Cerealkiller comments on Conclusion of the "Are you happy in Colombia?" post

I don't know and I think that is a very unlikely situation. No decent foreigner will diss a country while on holidays in the country, and the alternative would be a foreigner who lives in Colombia and disses the country at any opportunity... but then my question would be: what kind of loser would stay in a country they do not like?

Cerealkiller comments on A Colombian Story

A lot of crazy shit happens in the colombian countryside. Perhaps not exclusive to Colombia... but these stories/ experiences happened to take place there. I know of a couple really horrible ones. Does it happen everywhere? Maybe, I don't know and quite frankly, I don't care. Im sure its horrible and shocking but it just is what it is. I just think hard core nationalists choose to ignore reeeeeally important (life-death) issues to highlight something as superfluous and meaningless in a country's history as a pop star, or a nice pair of fake tits on the cover of SoHo. In regards to the suicide debate, IMO everyone should have the right and priviledge to end their lives whenever they want to, what saddens me is that people have to go through: a bottle of rat poison, a bullet through the head or the pain of open veins. Painless assisted suicide should be available to everyone who wants it.

Cerealkiller comments on Conclusion of the "Are you happy in Colombia?" post

I dont think most colombians are insecure about the way foreigners see colombia, I think most just get angry when foreigners come over have a great time and then diss the country. I for one don't really care about how foreigners -or colombians for that matter- feel about Colombia, it really does not affect me in any shape or form, if I have a good time that's more than enough.

Cerealkiller comments on Gina Parody, left Partido Uribista

I've always liked Gina Parody, she's young, honest, and has a lot of character. I did not agree with her support for Uribe but I've always liked her charisma, knowledge and ability to defend her POVs, I am very happy to see she has come to her senses. She had been planning this for quite some time and I know she will now support Fajardo as president. Way to go Gina!!!

Cerealkiller comments on Looking to buy Lavanderia / Dry Cleaner in Roswales / Cedridos / Chico

I agree with g-loid. Utility bills will leave you with virtually no profit at all. My mother has washer-dryer and a maid at home yet most of her clothes and my dad's shirts are sent to the dry cleaners -a lot of people do the same thing-. I would suggest you operate a bit further south, say chapinero and offer drop off and pick up service in Rosales. Good luck stealing customers from pressto.

Cerealkiller comments on No serial killers, cannibals,or child dungeons in colombia!

It is not a secret that this sort of mentally-emotionally disabled individual is much more prevalent in western nations than it is in developing ones. Its just the way social interaction is set up, people in the west generally spend more time on their own than with other people. Becoming either schizophrenic or a social imbecile is just the tip of the iceberg. This western denial of humans as pack animals (as opposed to the free-willed individual joke) is frankly quite retarded and its a shame its already taking over the rest of the world. As for the US being so super diverse, you probably are right. But to say Colombia is a homogenous country is just a big fat lie. The fact that we all speak spanish doesn't mean squat. As for religion, maybe the majority are catholic, but I am colombian and not catholic, and don't even have the "same background" (what does this mean? that we are all inbreds or something? ) as my friends. I'd love to see how you're measuring diversity here...
