catherine b comments on Chavez hardens tone in dispute with Colombia I have to disagree with you there Vlad. Whether you do something or threaten to do so is equally reprehensable. I don't believe Colombia should shut down its border for the simple reason that Chavez keeps trying to escalate the situation. He has thousands of troops near the border already. If Colombia also places a significant number of troops near the border all it takes is one little "accidental" shot from either side to provoke something. It's not far fetched. There have been isolated incidents on the border for years. Just a few weeks ago Colombia was demanding an explanation from Venezuela that a Colombian child was shot and killed near the border by Venezuelan authorities.

catherine b comments on Chavez hardens tone in dispute with Colombia And then there are those on this forum who wonder why many of us here discuss Chavez and dislike him so. I don't think there will be a war unless Chavez goes ahead and launches one of his new Russian missiles which he seems so eager to do. Although what is more than evident is he's itching for a fight with somebody...anybody and his deteriorating mental health. It's time for Venezuelans to do something about their Loco in Chief before he creates a disastrous situation.

catherine b comments on Capturada alias 'Doris Adriana', del primer frente de las Farc Oh yes I can say that. It does'nt matter what her nationality is. She is still an enemy of the Colombian people. So besides you Cassini, the farc and a very very small minority I can assure you that it is a wonderful day for 99% of Colombians.

catherine b comments on La biografÃa no autorizada de Alvaro Uribe You're so full of s*** Cassini. You know nothing about me. I would never consider a hateful racist such as Le Pen to be a moderate. I do not "love" Uribe but I do admire and value his tenacity and resolve to finally rid Colombia of farc. Those of us who oppose farc are the ones who sincerely love justice, freedom and the truth.

catherine b comments on La biografÃa no autorizada de Alvaro Uribe Regarding the "psychological" profile of Uribe, having friends in that field I can assure you that a TRUE PROFESSIONAL would never attempt such a profile without first meeting the individual in person and interacting with that person. None of which the anonymous so called "psychiatrist" above has done. For all we know that "profile" could've been written by Raul Reyes or Felipe Zuleta, puhleeze! BTW, the characteristics mentioned above are a perfect description of Chavez. And no Cassini, you do NOT love Colombia! Defend your precious kidnappers all you want but please spare us your grotesque hypocrisy of "loving" Colombia. People who truly love a nation and its people would never wish a Khmer Rouge style plague on them. You hate Uribe not because you "love" Colombia but because he's the only Colombian president that is effectively destroying farc. I have to agree with Tasco when he points out that you are nothing but an internet propaganda arm of farc.

catherine b comments on Colombia: Guerrilla Leader Is Sentenced What's amazing is that farc wants Trinidad and Sonia to be part of the exchange. They're making the release of the hostages almost impossible. What's mind boggling and infuriating about this new demand is that when these two were initially captured, Uribe offered not to extradite them in exchange for the hostages. Farc did'nt accept the offer and now they want to make Trinidad and Sonia part of the deal?!?!

catherine b comments on Chavez says if the Opposition win the elections there will be a civil war in Venezuela. Are you that dense Juli, that the obvious has to be explained in minute detail? I had considered expanding on my previous response to you but you're so rude and belligerent that I no longer feel I "owe" you any further explanation. "No disrespect but I am trying to see your side - honestly and sincerely." In the future if you're "really" that curious about any particular post or position another poster has you may wish to first attempt some basic courtesy in your approach. It's really not so difficult.

catherine b comments on Chavez says if the Opposition win the elections there will be a civil war in Venezuela. In case you hav'nt been reading or watching the news for the last ..oh 2 months Chavez has not let a week go by without having some type of comment or attempt at meddling in Colombian affairs. So while he is NOT the president of Colombia he seems to think he is, and his close ties with farc and Senator Cordoba amongst other things do make him and his ever increasing public displays of emotional instability a current topic of conversation among many Colombians. Here's a novel idea Juli: why don't you post topics that interest you instead of expecting others to post topics according to your personal likes and dislikes.

catherine b comments on our Hugo, hat in hand.... Venezuela swallows rhetoric, buys American food Well I think it's because Chavez has said that the "empire" wants to assasinate or depose him...well now it's Colombia that's guilty of that. And while I don't doubt that the USA and Colombia among others would love to see Hugo leave, if the USA were really that serious about and commited to overthrow Chavez as he claims we could have done that already by no longer buying his oil. The 2 countries he attacks the most are also the two that he is most dependent on both financially as well as food supplies.

catherine b comments on Chavez has reason Chavez spends more money than any Latin American government to improve his image in the USA. http://www.miamiherald.com/949/story/388403.html WASHINGTON -- When the Venezuelan Embassy and CITGO recently launched the Washington leg of their discounted heating-oil program for America's poor, President Hugo Chávez's publicity machine went into high gear. The launch was held in the modest home of Safronia Holland, a black woman described by CITGO as a ''67-year-old grandmother struggling . . . with rising energy costs.'' Children waved Venezuelan flags, and Venezuelan diplomats beamed. There was food -- and lots of media. While Chávez regularly rails against U.S. ''imperialism,'' he is also spending upwards of $70 million to improve his image in the United States, from Washington to Alaska. His embassy, among Washington's busiest, works with dozens of groups that favor his left-wing ''Bolivarian'' revolution. And his discount heating-oil program has benefited tens of thousands of America's poor. Indeed, no Latin American country in recent history has invested so much money and effort in shaping U.S. perceptions of its government, largely negative as a result of Chávez's anti-Bush rhetoric, his friendship with Cuba and Iran, and doubts about his commitment to democracy. Chávez's oil-fueled ''revolution'' has made him beloved or despised in his own country, boosted his standing as mentor of leftist Latin American leaders like Bolivia's Evo Morales and Nicaragua's Daniel Ortega -- and provided the resources to lobby for grass-roots support in the United States. ''I wouldn't say he's anti-American. He is clearly, however, anti-U.S. hegemony,'' said Kenneth Roberts, who teaches Latin American affairs at Cornell University. ``He has this strategic vision of redistributing power in world affairs. He has a stronger vision of that than any other leader we've seen in this generation.'' True to Chávez's populist ways, he has been trying to reach the American people directly, rather than the traditional way of lobbying U.S. Congress members. A draft of the Venezuelan foreign ministry's budget for 2008 requests $193 million to ''intensify'' Venezuela's actions worldwide. That does not include salaries for diplomats and other routine expenditures. SPREADING THE WORD The document, obtained by El Nuevo Herald, says that in the United States, the ministry wants to encourage exchanges with social movements, spread the word on Venezuela through alternative media, step up its support of the ''excluded sectors of U.S. society,'' and promote ``groups in solidarity with the Bolivarian revolution.'' Such pro-Chávez groups remain small, however. A Venezuela Solidarity Network screening Dec. 1 in Washington of a documentary on Chávez's victory in a 2004 recall referendum drew fewer than a dozen people. The first pro-Chávez groups in the United States sprang up in 2002, when the Bush administration faced accusations -- strongly denied -- that it had backed a coup against Chávez that year. Today, three networks remain active, often led and supported by Americans involved in a broad range of left-of-center activities. Chuck Kaufman, a veteran of the opposition to U.S. policies in Nicaragua in the 1980s, set up the Washington-based Venezuela Solidarity Network while Alan Woods, editor of the publication In Defense of Marxism, founded the Minneapolis-based group Hands Off Venezuela. Kaufman says he has branches in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Houston and 2,000 e-mail contacts for his ''emergency response network,'' which alerts activists to possible U.S. government actions against Chávez. Venezuela Solidarity Network's East region coordinator, Banbose Shango, says he supports several Havana causes, including Free the Five, a campaign seeking the release of Cuban intelligence agents convicted in Miami and serving prison terms. Then there are the U.S. versions of the pro-Chávez volunteer groups known as Bolivarian Circles. They coordinate only loosely among one another, making it hard to determine how many are active. William Camacaro, who heads the one in New York, says they exist in many major urban centers, including Houston, Los Angeles, Boston and Chicago. There is also a circle in Miami. ''We're trying to contain the propaganda that exists in the mainstream media against the Venezuelan government,'' Camacaro said. Venezuelan Ambassador Bernardo Alvarez, who travels often around the country pitching Chávez's policies, also argues that the lobbying is mostly defensive because Chávez foes would like to see sterner, Cuba-style U.S. sanctions imposed on Venezuela. The Bush administration has ended most forms of aid and weapons sales to Venezuela, saying its government has refused to cooperate on issues like drug trafficking and terrorism. ''Ours is a government with an alternative vision that has been demonized,'' Alvarez told The Miami Herald. ``Unfortunately, we must coexist with an administration -- parts of an administration -- that after the . . . Sept. 11 events revived the Cold War in its most brutal form.'' Alvarez has also been busy promoting the subsidized heating-oil program for America's poor, handled by the Boston-based nonprofit Citizens Energy and CITGO, a unit of the state-run Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA), which owns several U.S. refineries and franchises 8,000 U.S. gas stations. Calling it the largest social program ever run by an oil firm, CITGO distributed 66 million gallons of heating oil last winter and hopes to double that volume this winter, reaching 220,000 U.S. households. Citizens Energy calculates that each household could save $320 per winter. CITGO, which does not operate in Alaska, has also donated more than $5 million to Alaskan American Indian organizations -- the estimated cost of 100 gallons each for about 12,000 households. In addition, the company donated $3.3 million to community groups in the South Bronx, and Alvarez says similar donations are in the works elsewhere. All of this gives Chávez a big U.S. footprint, reaching homes in 23 states, plus about 200 Indian tribes. The program even garnered recognition from Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman, who told the Reuters news agency that he wished ``more companies did it.'' But CITGO's links to Chávez have also spurred scattered calls to boycott its gas stations, including one billboard put up by a local businessman in Alabama -- with a photo of Chávez holding up a CITGO logo -- that read, ''Don't buy gas from this ass.'' Some Alaskans have refused CITGO's aid. Citizens Energy founder Joseph P. Kennedy, son of former Sen. Robert Kennedy, was unapologetic about teaming up with Chávez during the launch at Holland's home last month. The U.S. government, he said, regularly deals with countries accused of human-rights abuses, like China and Saudi Arabia. ''I don't hear anybody going after these other countries for the policies they practice,'' he said. ``I would just ask you to be fair and reasonable.'' Chávez has not totally shunned traditional lobbying. Four years ago, the embassy hired Patton Boggs, a powerful Washington lobby group, but the arrangement lasted only a few months. Alvarez declined to go into details. And according to filings with the Foreign Agents Registration unit of the Department of Justice, between 2004 and early 2007, the embassy paid $3,000 to $15,000 a month to Segundo Mercado-Lloréns, a member of the Discalced Carmelite Friars turned lobbyist for labor unions, to build up its internal lobbying capabilities, including training for Venezuelan diplomats. Much of the lobbying legwork falls on the Venezuela Information Office, set up in 2004 as a semi-autonomous embassy outreach unit. The embassy spent a little more than $1 million on that office in the year ending Aug. 31, 2007, according to Department of Justice filings. The office employs a handful of activists who are paid $30,000 to $60,000 a year. According to the office's logs for the year ending last August, the group made 342 contacts with nongovernmental organizations, via e-mail, phone or in person, with journalists, local officials, academics and students. Many journalists received e-mails ''suggesting ideas for balanced reporting.'' The office also asks activists to complain against alleged newspaper biases. One 2006 e-mail complained of the ''extreme hostility toward Venezuela'' by The Washington Post and provided a link to ''make your voice heard'' at the newspaper. Similar alerts targeted The Miami Herald, The Denver Post and other media. The Venezuelan unit contacted only eight offices in the U.S. Congress, where Chávez appears to have few friends. EFFORTS PRAISED During a visit to Caracas, Rep. William Delahunt, D-Mass., who participated in a group of U.S. and Venezuelan lawmakers created around 2003 to ease bilateral tensions, endorsed Chávez's efforts to free hostages held by Colombian rebels and said relations between the countries require ``mutual respect.'' Rep. José Serrano, D-N.Y., praised Chávez for his aid to America's poor after the Venezuelan president traveled in past years to the Bronx and Harlem to launch his heating-oil program. But most mainstream liberal groups, like MoveOn.org, ignore Chávez, and a resolution passed by the Senate condemning Chávez's decision last year to shut down an opposition TV station was backed by Sens. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Christopher Dodd. Ambassador Alvarez nevertheless says he has made some headway. "We've been able to gradually contain the most right-wing elements," he said, "who were out to get a congressional condemnation."

catherine b comments on Chavez has reason I'm so glad the Chavez cheerleaders are here to "educate" us about who and what Chavez and farc really are. Because clearly we should believe them over our own eyes and ears. http://www.esmas.com/noticierostelevisa/internacionales/697922.html Revela televisora colombiana que el ejército de Venezuela usa para entrenamiento un videojuego que recrea un conflicto con Colombia BOGOTÃ?, Colombia, ene.

It only proves that under Uribe even the powerful have to face justice. It seems to me that what others call the "scandal" of so many more important people being arrested in Colombia under Uribe than previous administrations is a testament to Colombia's democracy: imperfect as it may be it is still a democracy and a truer one than the thugocracy to the east. Can you imagine Chavez allowing the arrest and prosecution of any of his officers or party members? The only people in Venezuela who ever get incarcerated are members of the opposition. This story does'nt prove more corruption under Uribe than previous administrations. Colombia was'nt a stranger to corruption until only 5 years ago. It merely illustrates how much more corruption was tolerated and went unpunished in previous administrations.

catherine b comments on Uribe calls for investigation into alleged Venezuelan Mayor-FARC cassini says "Catherine b, just come here and say: you're Mancuso supporter. It's been obvious for some time." Really??? How so?? When have I EVER defended the paras? I have condemned them as terrorists and murderers on more than one occasion on this forum. Unlike you who has NEVER once said anything negative about farc. Whenever someone here posts news of another para atrocity I don't feel compelled to come to their defense, insult posters who speak out against the paras. Unlike YOU who refuses to acknowledge the farc are criminals and who insults anyone here who expresses their disgust towards farc. And if ever there were a petition to add names to "NO MAS AUC" I would sign it and I would not attempt to dissuade others from signing their names. Unlike YOU who not too long ago posted some story about how "dangerous" Facebook is, the CIA can obtain your personal information, blah, blah, blah. What was the point of that post? As you mentioned yourself, Facebook is the place where people are signing their names protesting farc (NO MAS FARC). So what purpose does it serve to frighten people from not joining Facebook, in relation to NO MAS FARC? The only purpose would be to dissuade people from signing their names to a list repudiating farc. Who would try to dissuade anyone from signing a petition that denounces farc? Only a farc supporter!

catherine b comments on Piedad Cordova was on the verge of being attacked on flight to Caracas robi, bear in mind that Piedad has done nothing more than accuse the Colombian government of just about every conceivable crime including trying to get her killed. What was her response to this incident? That it was the government's doing. That the government is "inciting" violence towards her. The last time Uribe mentioned her to the Colombian people was to thank her publicly for her role in facilitating the liberation of Clara Rojas and Consuelo Gonzalez. Cordoba wants to shift the blame yet AGAIN on Uribe's government and not recognizing that it is her behaviour that is the cause of this animosity from so many Colombians. The minister was basically telling her "Hey don't blame us for your unpopularity."

catherine b comments on Piedad Cordova was on the verge of being attacked on flight to Caracas "It is a true scandal that a minister of interior says that. His goal is the civil peace and maintaining yhe order not excusing threats." Really? And what are Senator Cordoba's duties as a Colombian citizen and elected representative of Colombian people and Colombian interests? What's truly scandalous are individuals who still try to portray farc as "noble" "freedom fighters" and ejercito del pueblo when we all know what monsters they truly are.

catherine b comments on tirofijo tiene cancer / tirofijo has cancer Notice how Cassini never refers to farc (known kidnappers, murderers, terrorists, child abusers, narco trafickers, rapists, etc) in unflattering terms? Never once a negative adjective to describe his precious farc. But when it comes to anyone else we're "animals" "beasts", etc, etc.

catherine b comments on Uribe calls for investigation into alleged Venezuelan Mayor-FARC Oh please, According to Cassini only Chavez and farc tell the truth...no matter how outrageous..oh and Uribe always lies. Cassini, just come out and say it: you're a farc supporter. It's been obvious for some time.

catherine b comments on Imagen favorable del presidente Uribe rompió récord del 80 por ciento Cassini is upset because it kills him that an OVERWHELMING majority of Colombians approve of Uribe and not farc. Even Chavez never got those numbers back when he actually was popular in Venezuela. The comparison with African despots is unfair and completely ridiculous. Say what you will about Uribe and the Colombian government it is STILL a democracy and one of the oldest in the western hemisphere. Even under a dictator such as General Rojas Pinilla Colombians enjoyed more freedoms in the 1950's than almost any African nation today.
