How to claim a death benefit

My wife was named the sole beneficiary on her grandmother's life insurance policy. At this time, they are talking about her appearing in person to claim the death benefit. It's an amount worth going to claim. We currently live in Los Angeles, CA and--as should be obvious since I'm writing on PBH--she's originally from Colombia. I botched her AOS paperwork and she doesn't have a permanent resident card yet or a travel document. So far the best idea we have is to hold on till the card comes t ...

The Johnnie Walker Situation

I ordered a Johnnie Walker and water at a club one night. The waitress brought the entire bottle, already opened of course. 180,000 pesos. I was later told that this is a European thing, to bring the whole bottle instead of just the glass I was expecting. My questions are:

A) Is this a European thing?
B) Is this customary in Colombia? ...

American Men w/ Wives or Girlfriends in Colombia

Not so long ago, I wrote a series of posts about American men being spun around in circles by their Colombian girlfriends. I acknowledge that it might have offended some people. It was so bad because of the language, the point was probably lost. So, as a public service, I wanted to restate the point a little cleaner.

Please men, do not trust women in long distance relationships. Make them earn the trust that you have in them. Do not let a red flag slide, giving her the benefi ...

Gringo on a moto in CTG

Another thread got me wondering, for all the alleged tourism going on in CTG, and the number of non-Colombian people living there, has anyone ever seen or been a gringo on a mototaxi in CTG? There are thousands of them there, and it just occured to me that I have never seen a gringo on one. ...

Expats and the telephone....

For Colombians who have relocated to other countries:

How often do you call your family in Colombia and how much time do you spend talking, on average, per week (or month, whichever is more appropriate)? ...

GOD I don't understand my gf!

I have a splitting headache. I'm trying to close some business that will allow me to finish the year on a great note. I go to the bathroom MEDICINE CABINET looking for the Tylenol. It's missing. "Ingrid, donde esta toda la medicina?" I find it in the kitchen cabinet, on the third shelf next to the plastic cups. Who the f*ck keeps Tylenol in the kitchen cabinet next to the plastic cups?!! Her answer: it's disgusting to keep medicine in the bathroom donde se hace los hueleros. I've never ...

So I'm sitting with this Syrian guy...

and he's telling me that 27% of Spanish does not originate with Latin, but with Arabic. So we get into this conversation about Moors, medieval Spain, and the eventual conquest of the Americas. Very interesting. I did not know, for example, that Cartagena in Spain was originally settled by Arab invaders who named the city Kartajenna; the spelling was not changed until the Catholics reclaimed the land from their invaders some 5 centuries later. So it turns out that my fiancee is from a city in ...

3 Leches Cake

My Colombian gf's birthday is next week. She likes 3 leches cake. In my area, there are no Colombian pastelerias, but there is a Mexican and a Cuban one. Does it make a difference?

Posting photos

Can someone briefly outline the specific rules for posting photos, including size, file type, etc? There seems to be more to it than what's immediately obvious on the site.

Recommendation: Hotel in Bogota

For anyone looking for Bogota accomodations, I just spent a wonderful week in Parque Alameda near Salitre Plaza.

I found the location at www.BogotaColombiaLodging.com. The proprietor's name is Bob Summers, and I honestly have to say I can't remember having had such great customer service. Bob's got two bedrooms, one bedrooms, studios, all the way down to a $20 a night room. Tell him your budget and he can probably makes something work for you. Great security in what is already ...

What is PBH really about?

While PBH has certainly been an informative source for me, the sad reality is that there are a number of posts that smack of gringo racism. Thus far, I haven’t commented on it because I’m here to share/learn, not argue.

One of the most refreshing aspects of my Colombian vacations has been the absence of racist innuendoes or behavior. Yet, on this board we do have several American and Canadian posters who betray their personal beliefs and/or histories in their writings.

partida de bautismo / registro de nacimiento

Our interview is tomorrow. My girlfriend has the originals. However, she requested copies so that she wouldn't have to leave the originals in the Embassy.

You know what? She's right next to me. I'm going to let her write this in Spanish because I have no idea what she's talking about.....

BOG to CTG by car.

Does anyone know how long it takes to drive from Bogota to Cartagena by car on a Friday morning?

Maps of Cali, Bogota, and Medellin

We often see posts with travelers asking for info regarding these cities (where to go, where to stay). As a good PBH citizen, I thought I would mention a site that maps these cities much like Yahoo maps or Expedia maps. It might be helpful orienting one's self with where your hotel is, how far you are from places you want to see, etc.

It is: www.mapred.com

I found it very helpful. ...

Babies, Ex-Wives, and Mother-in-Laws

Many of you know my costena will be here by the end of September. I have a little anxiety because I was once married. I have a daughter who I think lives in Ohio. My fiancee is anxious to have children so that she will feel on an "even level" with my ex-wife, who first made me a father. I'm 33, so having children is still something I want to do, but I'm not sure if I want to do it immediately.

Another thing that bothers me is that all my adult life I have been involved with La ...

Bogota meeting places

I am flying directly into Bogota to meet my girlfriend, who will be flying in from Cartagena. Problem is, neither of us have ever been to Bogota. I thought maybe there would be nearby hotels with a bar/lounge, or maybe a restaurant type deal, where any taxi driver is sure to know, that is nearby the airport, that I can suggest to her as a meeting place. We will be meeting on a Saturday night around 10:30 PM. I'm looking for places that are big and obvious, but not so big that I would never b ...

Thank Yous

I AM SO EXCITED THIS MORNING!!!! The Bogota Embassy updated the appointment schedule for September 2005 and we're on it for 9/27/2005.

I thought about posting this in the Visa Section, but some of the people I want to thank usually only hang out in the Friendly (Most of the Time) Talkzone.

Utopia Cowboy, when I was so down and out, so depressed and frustrated with the process, which did not go smoothly at all, thanks for always answering my questions thoroughly and ...

La suegra y el martillo

Wednesday, there was a domestic dispute in my fiancee's house. She lives with her parents. My girlfriend's sister has moved from Cartagena to Santa Marta to be with her new marido and their baby. However, this sister had a daughter from a previous relationship, and she just left girl there at the abuelo's house in Cartagena. Now this little girl is protesting, won't go to the colegio, ranting and raving having temper tantrums in the house. The abuelo pacifies her by buying her toys. Wednes ...

DS-156 and DS-156K

The embassy omitted a key part of my fiancee's address when they mailed her Packet 3, so technically, she has never physically SEEN the packet. Using info I got from people on this site, I learned that she needs to return a DS-230 and DS-2001 (formerly OF-169) from Packet 3, which we did by fax.

I have become concerned that DS-156 and/or DS-156K should have been part of that fax as well. Should they have been? ...

Medical and Lab contact numbers info...

Does anybody have Dr. Consuelo's telephone number? Is there a telephone number for the lab? Do you need an appointment for the lab?

Don't Bother to Call the Visa Call Center

The Visa Call Center listed on the Bogota Embassy website is a complete waste of time and money. These people can't even tell you specific information about your case. For general information, everything you need is available through the USCIS website, NVC, the State Department, or the embassy itself. The Call Center will charge you about $13 per 15 minute call, which is not necessary the price tag that's the problem, it's the frustration. If you have an issue with your case, you can't call ...
