calor11 comments on For a video of this, see the movie "Scarface" with Al Pacino. I'm normally more backing more right wing policies but as i read more and more stories such as these, we all have to question ourselves. It definintely makes me think about how the victims of these actrocities and thier compatriots are feeling when a gringo prime minister from the north so easily shoots off support for one party or another, or simplifies whch policies work or not in thier county. In fact, with a country so divided, in a long and violent battle between extremities, i'm sure the average adolescent has more insight into Colombian's problem/solution than a foreign prime minister ,and would be offended by such comments. Maybe it could be the right choice, or path, but our Prime Minisiter is backing one side of a war, (seemingly the winning side), but this translates into a violent death for a whole lot of individuals, families, women/children, and the above story, i'm sure, is just a hint of what happens in a country like Colombia.

calor11 comments on Canada - Colombian agenda When i read that Uribe has made 27 visits to the US, he seems to be placing all eggs in one basket, and become single minded in his vision to increase economic trade in his country. He's never visited Canada ? and as Timba mentions, the #1 refugees to Canada are Colombians. Shame... Harper is quite right-wing, and often critized to be too friendly to US policies, a negative particularily in Canada, however every right-wing party suffers these accusations here. I agree with manNred above and am glad that Harper has taken his stance, and knows that increased economic trade is part of the solution to improved living standards for average Colombians

calor11 comments on i tried to go to a colombian party :( In Canada, you don't usually get stabbed unless you deserve it, meaning you're involved in certain activities and you're making enemies, so I'm still disappointed to not have gone. I'm just wiping the egg off my face, after spending hours dismissing my friends concerns about possible violence at these events.

calor11 comments on "Frivolous journalism" receives high award St. Tertius, I apologize for the delay. The breakdown approach and spewing out stats to prove our points will not have us come to agreement, but in fact will entrench us further in our stances. I stand by my points which strongly backed by easily found stats and clearly evident in Colombian society (as I'm sure yours are as well), "para-political associations are a reality and necessity in the past and present day politics (although I'm sure much more obscured); Colombia is a much SAFER and better place to live present day for the average civilian; Para-miltia and guerrilla activity has been diminishing and these advancements have been more successful than past attempts; I will agree on your point, which is fact, the initial subject of this blog, that URIBE's reaction to the investigation are not too much to be proud of, to which I gave my explications of these actions, not an excuse. As I have hinted to in a prior reply, your purist "holier than thou" approach to your definition of advancement, while morally upstanding, are not congruent with a functioning democratic system where its all about "give and take" and "moving forward in a less than perfect world". You'd make a great opposition party leader though :)

calor11 comments on "Frivolous journalism" receives high award Political convenience of course ! better interest of the county, also. Up to just recently, and in all probability still today, acquaintance with paramilitary groups and drug cartels would have been unavoidable for any politician who wished to actually govern. Gina Parody is a perfect example of the success of his administration, a product of the gains Colombia has made, enjoying the luxury of political expression, without having to associate with these aforementioned groups. You could argue here, she wouldn't be there without her Uribe parapolitica association?
|
|
calor11 comments on "Frivolous journalism" receives high award Point 1: i'm sure Uribe as everyone knows about "infiltration", "corruption" in this country which is far being totally under central gov't control, but will avoid mass panic by not confirming this publicly. This would be his reason for blowing this report off as frivolous, and for the good of Colombia at this moment, I would agree to this political strategy.

calor11 comments on TNK-BP's Kovykta oil field was just recenlty "sold" (seized) to Russias Gazprom at approx. 1/10 the true value. This after over 10yrs investment and R&D by BP into these fields. The brits, dutch, french, and americans have been at OIL war with each other since world war 1. Now throw in the Russians and Chinese. There will always be another standing in line, but will it be a better deal for venezuela ? not really as the risks have proven itself to come true (the gov't seizue of assets / non-respect of contract). its a poker game....and they're playing their cards, but in the end they know they're all better off coming to terms.

calor11 comments on "Frivolous journalism" receives high award would you call an award from "transparency international" a "HIGH" reward ? its an small niche organization for transparency not journalism. Obviously they gave the award to the report for its subject matter, not its journalistic talent, not to say it wasn't a good report since i've have not read it.

calor11 comments on New post layout peter, first of all, you've got an amazing helpful website. I think the dept of tourism colombia should be subsidizing this site. i have a suggestion for the "COMMENTS" page. When i make a "comment", i want to go back in a day or two to follow up the conversation log, however i have to search for the original post. Its difficult expecially if we are commenting on many subjects. I suggest to put a LINK to the original post, on each of our comments on the users ALL comments page. Users will be able to easily refind the conversations to keep the blog going.

hi DW, thanks for the reply on medaillin and the fashion industry. I currently do all my production in china, i wish it was in colombia :( . Anyway i came across Colombiamoda show in MED on the internet which somewhat relates to my industry and i think i'll go check it during that week. Yeah, i would really appreciate escaping the tourist traps and gettting to know MED/Colombia and all in a different manner. i must admit, although i've done extensive travelling from backpacking to business, some of these crime stories are freaking me out (the one about drugging people), knowing myself as the adventurous type, i feel i could run into trouble. I would appreciate any advice, contact, that you might be able to provide, are you down there now ?

forgot love, although you probably "loved" poppin her, so don't even go this direction. However as a stand up guy, you can still show respect like you seem to be doing. Nothing wrong with doing the right thing, but as you know not everyone believes this so don't be surprised for a let down. You didn't mention in your message if you wanted the child or not ? (if it was yours that is)

calor11 comments on i wanna visit last 2 weeks of july thanks, i'm definitely interested in Medallin and Bogata. i've heard so much about Medallin expecially. Guess, i'm really trying to find another purpose to go down there and do something other than just sight see. i work in the fashion industry, and finance, anyone in these industries ?

calor11 comments on Colombiano o Espanol ?. ha, what a job you must have to live by everyday, must make you quite paranoid about just wanting to chill with your pals. you should be able to tell over time, i would watch mannerisms, spaniards are more reserved than south amercians. Also look on the web about info on Barcelona, and inconspiciously bring up some of this info in a conversation, " have you been to this bar ?" or " whats the name of that big church in center of town ?"... good luck
