BxUnika comments on Driving licence in the US

"No they are not. With the anti-immigrant sentiment in the U.S. towards hispanics I'm surprised they even gave her a Visa. Here in California they are deporting undocumented laborers for Jaywalking, alot of hate here in the U.S." Charging people who commit crimes and break laws with reprecussions is hateful? I'm glad to see CA is finally taking illegal immigration seriously.

So Sawwy... """Honestly it's tough for a gringo to find a good hearted, non puta, non gold digging chica..... AND not many of these good women, if you can find them, really want a non-colombian man.""

Sorry to say, but if you weren't defectove in some way or didn't perceive yourself as defective subconsciously, you'd never need to go to another cntinent to find a woman.

BxUnika comments on Birds don't shit on your shoulder en el centro.

Interesting This happened to me about two weeks ago in San Victorino in the plaza area, though I did not get robbed. I felt something wet and figured it was a bird. Then I thought,"This is a set-up" and kept walking. I guess I can't blame you for thinking it was a bird, but I realized vety quick that this was a set-up. They do this shit here in NYC as weel, supposedly to tourists.

BxUnika comments on * I am leaving poorbuthappy

To Those Who Are Leaving I don't like to see people go, but I can understand why you're leaving. I started reading PBH when it first started. It was quite small, the information was easily accessible, and to the point, and you did not have to sift through threads and threads of sometimes unrelated posts.

Some say put up or shut up. Why don't I participate as much on the ste as I once did? It is getting very old hat. Out of the posters, maybe 20% are actually from Colombia, most live abroad, and teh rest are pretty much non-Colombians and the occasional Colombian-American(-Canadian, -Brit, etc.) who are pretty far removed from the Colombian experience. Poor but happy? More like Upwardly-Mobile and Bitter or Living-like-they're rich and clueless. It seems like an awful lot of the people here are not living in reality. The fact that most of us have internet in our homes to begin with is quite telling. Most Colombians are not schmoosing around Andino and Atlantis Plaza or El Poblado all day nor are most spending countless waking hours in cyberspace arguing trivial matters on a messageboard with strangers.

In the "rules" (I use quotations because the rules here are clearly a f'king joke) here it states that personal insults and attacks, talking about off-topic subjects (i.e., which women are easiest to bed, sexiest, where to score the best hookers, etc.), and the like were prohibited. Why is it, then, that about 75% of the posts here are along the lines of just that? You have Morphus and his 13 year old girlfriends, Poco and his cereal box-shaped, cellulite-ridden behinds, and Don Gringo and his daily horror stories about Bogota and how he and his relatives stay locked up in their houses after 6 PM for fear of their lives, and countless other sad stories.

My question: Where are the moderators here? What are they doing? Does it make sense to erase a post taht was accidentally placed in the wrong category yet not all the posts regarding prepagos, sex, hookers, drugs, insults towards woman (esp. American ones), cliche sob stories, and insult-fests? I don't get it, I really don't. Who is this board geared towards? 35-60 year old gringo losers who don't have the looks, social skills, or confidence to meet a woman in their own turf? People who have no social lives and rely on a fantasy cyberspace board as their sole form of socializing? Bitter, angry American men who were burned by their 19 year old prepago girlfriends? Sexual and drug tourists?

I am am wrong, somebody please set me straight, but it seems this forum has been all but lost to the lowest common denominator. Those who have great ideas, info, and insight such as Colombiche, my pal Webmanco, often Desi, Kat and the like, please keep up the good work and fresh blood.

BxUnika comments on Getting new cedula, passport, etc

Not a Colombian National "I believe it is the LAW for people with dual nationality to have BOTH passports at the airport. Things change so maybe this has also. DAS employees at the airport play by the rules,, now if I could just find that rule book.

Asked DAS the amount of fine if you stayed past your "passport stamped" extension. One Months Minimum Salary or 432,000 pesos. That's what they say but I'd guess they can say anything they want."

I have the temporary cedula de extranjeria but I am still a US citizen and have not yet applied for Colombian citizenship. I don't have a date stamped that I am supposed to leave on. I am considered a "resident" or something analogous. I am registered now in Colombia and my Colombian visa is good for "multiple entries". I guess I am only supposed to pay the exit fee then?

BxUnika comments on Getting new cedula, passport, etc

... I got my cedula de extranjeria in 2 weeks. I'm not sure if those type are different and maybe I'm wrong, but if I got mine in 2 weeks, why does it take you guys 2 years? When I travel within Colombia I travel with my cedula, not taking my passport. Even with my cedula de extranjeria (I'm American), will they hassle me in the airport as well? They really didn't give me a hard time coming or going anytime or treated me any differently han the did any other Colombian, it seems. My fear is more with US Immigration upon arrival in NY not here.

BxUnika comments on Bush in Colombia

Maybe I'm Completely Mistaken But has anybody been in downtown Bogota today like on Carrera 13 near where it passes near el Museo de Oro? I didn't note exact street numbers but it seems that from about Chapinero down, somebody smashed the windows out of every other storefront or bank and it looked as if one or two of them has cars try to drove through them. I am guessing these were acts done by anti-Bush demonstrators? Forgive me if I'm wrong, it's just after saturday night was sick with a fever and just started to go out again this afternoon and I don't watch TV, so miss a lot. Anyone notivce all these broken windows?

BxUnika comments on Armenia

Live or Visit? I was in Armenia about a month ago and the surrounding villages. I have been to all coffee-region cities, Medellin, live in Bogota, been in B/manga, Santa Marta, and Cartagena. My perception and from what have heard, Armenia is pretty safe. I did not spend a lot of time in the city itself, though, rather the pueblos (Circasia, Montenegro, Calarca, Salento, etc.). I would say Quindio is one of the if not these most convenient departments due to all villages being less than an hour from Armenia, the capital, plus you have Cali 3 hours away, Pereira 1 hour, and Manizales 2 hr. and change. You also have a lot of tourist sites like Panaca (didn't go), the Coffee Park (excellent), pretty architectural sites like Salento, and the Quindio Botanical Garden/Butterfly Display in Calarca.

BxUnika comments on HOW TO GO TO PEREIRA

.... It's amazing how people get themselbes into these situations.

BxUnika comments on Brief travel guide to Bucaramanga

Que Decepcion Must have been a bumangues who named it "La Ciudad Bonita". Nothing much to do or see and not any prettier than Medellin or even Pereira or Armenia, for that matter. The Zona Rosa was a joke, extremely tiny. The only truly pretty part of B/manga was on the hills in the gomelito section overlooking the city. Nice view, but the architecture was nothing to write home about and nothing you won't see in any other Colombian city. Que decepcion. Passing through San Gil was nice, though. save the money and go to San Gil or some place in the coffee region.

BxUnika comments on Manizales

Manizales? I am thinking of going there soon. A few questions:

1) What is safety like there in comparison to Bogota (where live), Armenia, and Medellin?

2) In Bogota tourists are cautioned not to go to the south of the city and to generally stay north or east. Is there a certain sector or side of the city which should be avoided?

3) What neighborhoods are sketchy or should best be avoided? According to Colombiche's site from a while ago, there map breaks the city up into 9 sections. Are any of these sections better or worse than the others?

4) Where does one go to catch buses to nearby towns in Caldas and Risaralda? Do you have to go to Teriminal Transporte or are there colectivos that pick up passengers all around the city?

5) For those who have been there, what are the absolutely must-see sites in Manizales?

Muchas gracias.

BxUnika comments on Brief travel guide to Bucaramanga

at Velo Violeta... "In your opinion, what are the chances of him secretly being the so-called "breed"? Is this some kind of Colombian Man Disease? I found the comment above a bit harsh, to be honest, yet I'm still curious as to how accurate this "gringo's" information is."

Look at where this information is coming from. Take a look at this website. Read some of the most popular posts, tell me who is writing the majority of them, what groups here are very under-represented, and what the main interest of forum members on here is. I think these questions can be answered easily enough. If not, I will just say it is a lot more than ironic and a tad bit humorous to read a gringo referring to COLOMBIAN men as predators. Calling the pot black a tad, are we?

BxUnika comments on Best Bars in Bogota

Galeria Cafe Libro and Quiebra Canto Funny you mention them both, Sr. Tertius. I was an GCL last night and at Quiebra Canto on Wedmesday. GCL is excellent if you know how to dance. I only saw a very small amount of what looked like North Americans and Europeans.

Now, Quiebra Canto...I went on Weds., which everyone says is the day to go. I found it kind of lame and probably 50% of the crowd was either North American, European, or from other parts of Latin America (some Argentines). Even though it was where it was (not the North), it borderlined on a bit touristy for my tastes. They played a lot of what they tried to pass of as "Reggae", which was really a bunch of Pop Top 40 crap from the 1990s. The crowd seemed to be predominantly 20-somethings, but of course I managed to find some near-middle-aged gringos trying to work the crowd. Lame-o!

Also, I really have not been to any other sitios in la Zona Rosa or Parque 93 (I go there for Crepes & Waffles only), but the places look artificial and the music I hear from those places is the smae crap you can get in any US city for the most part. Nothing too special, just a place to be seen. I think I will stick to Galeria Cafe Libro or the joints in the El Centro, thank you very much.

Any good places that play vallenato, salsa, and/or merengue?

BxUnika comments on I was a fool for a Colombiana

I Agree W/ Desi and Rubito My take on it is that when you have a low self-esteem and lack confidence, it is pretty obvious to other people. My take on this is that these guys who keep getting played represent themselves in a desperate way and are treated as such. I mean, how much self-worth could a person have if he is going to marriage agencies, browsing international dating sites, and traveling thousands of miles because he cannot get a woman in his own country? Many argue and say this is a farse, that they CAN get any woman they want, but why do they choose to travel across country boundaries, drop lots of money to impress, and go for more undesirable girls (i.e., very young, poor, uneducated, etc.)? Who is fooling whom here?

BxUnika comments on I was a fool for a Colombiana

"Nobody has it worse than him..." Are you serious? Well, then, I'd give him the advice that many people have been given before: if you don't like being treated like a doormat, stop lying down and acting like one. I feel bad for people who suddenly find out tha their significant other is a fraud or mislead then, but people who have so little respect for themselves that they knowingly put up wth taht crap almost deserve it. If hyou have no respect for yoursel, don't expect that anybody else will.

BxUnika comments on RUBITO LIVE IN BOGOTA SAT JAN 27

Carajo... I just got home and learned that I will not be here this weekend in Bogota. I am going to Quindio on Thursday bright and early with some familiares. I knew I was going, but was under the impression that we were leaving NEXT week, not this week. I'll be there for like 5 days, I think.

I was actually looking forward to see Rubito play and perhaps, to meet some more of you. Dude, please take pictures. Say, when are you going back to NY? Do you have other gigs in the near future? Que pena.

BxUnika comments on my money stolen from account in Santa Rosa (De Cabal)

Por Que No Estoy Sorprendida... I am just curious as to a few things:
1) I assume you met her on the internet, right?
2) How long did you "know" her before you gave her that money?
3) WHY did you give her that much money? Damn, I know married couples who have been together for 10 years who would not just drop $1,000+ on the other like that...

See, this goes back to the whole "grass is greener on the other side". Save for the girls on Jerry Springer, I have never in my life known a guy who would give his girlfriend that much money so soon just like that. Do some of you here feel sorry for these women because they live in Colombia? Now, I know the vast majority of the guys who are dropping big bucks on these Colombian women would not dream of giving that kind of money to an American or Canadian woman *just like that*.

What goes on in the heads of these men? They are so desperate or have such low self-worth that they will literally travel to a different continent, learn another language, and drop thousands of dollars just to receive some affection? No, no, no. Sorry, but people are people no matter where you go and Colombia is no different.

BxUnika comments on Safety in Bogota

Re: DonGringo "I wonder what you think of this, since I agree with most of what you wrote with this exception: I have walked back to my house at 3AM many times and not had a problem not once but as ruitine. I have found in four years of doing so here that this works here but in the states does not. Here the robbery is not going to be on an empty street with no one around as there is no one to rob. In the states they like this so that no one can see what they are doing to you."

I agree with you mostly except, well, maybe you forgot? I am a female and have lived in various crappy areas and getting robbed or murdered are not my main concerns, if you get my drift. Walking down any dark streets for a female is probably not the smartest idea.

BxUnika comments on Tomorrow in Bogota- Friday Afternoon Reminder

Teachers? Well, I am definitely not a teacher. Go to meetup.com and look up Bogota and PBH.

BxUnika comments on Safety in Bogota

Agree with JuanceGomez As a woman it is a bit different, though. My rule of thumb is that whenever go someplace new, I look to see if there are a lot of females around and if so, are they alone or accompanied. I think it is kind of a drag sometimes because in most of Manhattan, say, young woman are out and about alone until all hours of the night. I get home by about 10 and that's it because any later would be risking it.

I think some people go to one of two extremes: either they think Bogota is just like any US or European city and just totally stand out by doing ridiculous things and think they are invincible. I think there are a few of those types on this board, the ones that adamantly argue that any Colombian city is as safe or safer than the US. That is a mistake. On the other hand, there are some people who seem to be paranoid and overly cautious, people who would probably stay in their houses after 7 PM and be scared to buy a carton of milk in Chico at 9 PM.

Really, just look at what others are doing as a guide if you are unsure. If there is a street with no one walking on it, totally desolate, there is probably a good reason for it. I think it also helps if you have lived in a major city before and therefore, are privy to urban issues that aren't so prevalent in the suburbs and rural areas.

BxUnika comments on Safety in Bogota

"I don't think you should be afraid to come here. I am out late and here and there and I have seen some stuff here. I can't understand how ANYONE who is out late at night for an extended period living here and never see's a problem."

No, I have seen a few things. There is a difference between being cautious and being stupid. I am walking around Chico, Chapinero, etc., not the south at night time. At least here, my thing is is that unless you have a reason to go into certain neighborhoods, you just don't belong there.

"The difference is that if you are very gringo you are going to stand out. EVERYONE knows that here and you are a target since you are seen as having money. That is the truth, so it would be the same if you were a white businessman in Detriot and you were driving in a Mercedes in your three piece suit and got out and took a walk in the worst neighborhood. That is the way it is in the south of Bogota."

Well, you are correct but I keep my trips to the south to a minimum. In actuality, some of these neighborhoods here they I go out in are safer than where I lived in the US (the Bronx, Washington Hts., Corona). I am careful but I am not going to live incarcerated where I don't leave my house after 6 PM.

Also, if you speak Spanish, do so. I don't know how others feel here, but sometimes I see Americans and the only reason I know they are from the US is that they are speaking English loudly and just sticking out like a sore thumb. I don't really speak English in the street. This afternoon I saw an American and two Aussies (??) speaking English in La Candelaria. I had mixed feelings about that.

"I have taken buses all around and just getting on one for a ride is stupid. They may end you up in a real shit hole end of the line and tell you to get off. I have taken them into some less than nice areas but prefer a taxi. I have also taken them to the end of the line and I know where that is if you are going south adn it aint always pretty."

Precisely. That's why I am telling him, use buses during the day at first so that if you do get on the wrong one and end up in a shithole the chances are good that in daylight you'll make it out. It would be ridiculous to pretend it's totally safe here and then take some bus nad mistakenly end up in Bosa or some place.

"You can not live like that here as a gringo and not end up in trouble. Sure you can get away with it. I do get away with it but not on a regular basis and I know the risk I am taking. Sooner or later it may catch up with me, hope not but I know that the more I expose myself to risk the higher my chances of having a problem."

I don't think eating at Crepes & Waffles at 9 PM in Parque del 93 constitudes as high risk behavior. I am not out drinking. I would not stay out in, say, near Plaza Bolivar by myself after about 7 PM. That would just be stupid. Go to plavces where lots of people are and that has good lighting. Stick to the main streets and don't wander off into dark streets or use park pathways.

"The key to being here is risk management and street smarts. Those two things in mind and their is no reason you won't have any problems. If you are out to prove Bogota safer than any US city you are going to go down my friend."

That's for sure. I lived in NY in crappy areas and let me tell you, the South Bronx, Bed-Stuy, East NY, and Brownsville has nothing on South Bogota. Honestly, there are some lower-middle class areas around here that I avoid just becase they look and remind me of certain undesirable areas of NY.

BxUnika comments on Safety in Bogota

at Robert Jorge Well, I agree with almost all that you said, I would never say Bogota is as safe as any US city. PARTS of it are, but on the whole, nope. After a while you will get accustomed and have an idea of what your level of comfort is in certain situations. I cannot think of one place at home in NYC I would ever be scared to go into or have real reason to fear, but that is not necessarily the case here in Bogota.

BTW, I loved "selling papayas". I think that sounds better than "giving papaya". If dando papaya is giving people the upper hand, vendiendo papaya should mean suicide. I think I am going to use that now. LOL

BxUnika comments on My unbiased opinion of cities I’ve visited in Colombia.

My God... "These girls look like in about ten years they'll be perfect Diabetes and high cholestral candidates. I mean, I have no problem giving credit where it it is due, but these girls look borderline dumpy. "

"Also-the woman in that video can't even dance? "

What the hell are wrong wth people on here?

BxUnika comments on Safety in Bogota

Well... I now live in Bogota. I am a 5'8, blonde, blue-eyed White female, to better describe myself. I arrived here a week ago after not being here since April. I live in a strata 3/4 more or less middle-class area. I walk around at night alone until 10 or 11 on a daily basis. I have ended up in less than desirable areas after dark but nothing that really scared me. Then again, I used to live in the Bronx, NYC.

I think in some instances people are paranoid and overly cautious, especially when giving advice to a foreigner. There are certain places that are basically safe all times of day, some during the day, and some you should just avoid. I would say it helps if you know some Spanish and though some here disagree, if you look at how others dress and try not to stand out, you should be ok. I would fool around with buses and "get lost" during the day rather than at 2 AM so that at least you can turn around if you end up somewhere that frightens you.

Where exactly is your school located? If you have an address we can tell you more or less how the area is around there. Also, where wuld you be living? Would you be alone here or with friends/classmates?

BxUnika comments on Reasons for moving to Colombia (or any other country)

Curious Maybe I sound like a hypocrite, but I have to ask...

I have not really posted too much on the boards lately, but as of yesterday I am here in Bogota indefinitely. I worked my ass off for 7 months to acquire the capital to fund my trip, plus having family friends who live here helps. I hear about how some people on this board just come and go in a drop of a dime. Is it that you are independently rich or own a business or sold all of your stuff to have the time and money for your trips?

My money will go fast and I don't think I'd want to live here on a permenent basis. The food is good as are the paisajes y comidas, but it is just not New York. I really cannot imagine anyone from the US moving here permenently unless they were 1) ready to retire 2) were from small towns or rural areas, or 3) are young and are only here temporarily. I think I am spoiled because I am from NY, but I'm not sure that even Bogota could keep my mind occupied forever. I would agree that maybe Colombians are more culturallly isolated than other groups. Hmmm...
