"Yankee" ?

Thought this would be the place to ask (well, it's better than "where does the word Gringo come from"). I'm just curious as to the origins of the word "Yankee". I understand, rightly or wrongly, that it comes from the Civil War, but why, and what does it mean? Thanks. ...

Various Items Of Lost Property Found In Jamundi

For sale, or free to a good home. One Aston Villa Football Club towel, complete with club crest. Old, ragged and worn ... like it's previous owner, La Camp. One pair of fake Gucci sunglasses. Look good without the worry of getting them stolen in the centre of Cali...Mrs Fugdis. One pair of swimming trunks, complete with skidmarks.... Morrongo, wear underpants next time or bring your own trunks! One drunk Colombian wife (oh, she's mine). Wanted. One jaccuzzi heater that works. One P ...

Paddy´s Day In Cali

As I was unable to get to the well publicised, yet apparently non-existant, opening night of the new Irish Hostel in Medellin, I spent St Patrick´s Day in Cali. Well, Jamundi to be exact. And what a night it was I can tell you! Evening meal (beans, rice and salad), followed by "El Poder de 10" and "El Ultimo Matriminio Feliz"! (Don´t know what happened to "Pura Sangre" - did that guy who was shot die or what?) Then, the RCN news and bed. Not a Guinness or a leprachaun in sight. No spuds and no ...

Relocation Rip-off?

Maybe some of you legal eagles, or someone who has been through this type of crap already can help. Before recently relocating here from the UK we were told by the Colombian Consulate in London that, as my wife was Colombian and had lived outside of Colombia for more than 2 years, she could relocate our furniture and certain domestic items free of any importation tax or duties. We obtained the necessary documentation from them to do this (copies of passports, visa, proof of absence, etc.) stam ...

What is the score with Ingrid Bethancourt?

I was just interested in what anyone´s views about Ingrid Bethancourt were, her politics, her motives etc. The Colombians I´ve spoken to regarding her are mostly of the opinion that she isn´t quite what she would lead people to believe that she is. They say that she was warned as to her safety before going to meet FARC but ignored the warnings and put her public image before the safety of her companions. They also say that she supposedly now has a child by one of her captors and the whole th ...

HSBC Bank Strike Update

Just a quickie for those who, like myself, bank with 'El banco del mundo'. I spoke to a member of staff outside my local HSBC Bank in Cali yesterday to see if I could find anything more out about the ongoing strike. I was told that there are still two points to be negotiated and that there was to be a meeting yesterday (18th) at 4pm. The outcome of this meeting would determine whether or not the strike was to be called off. If an agreement could be reached the member of staff envisaged a retur ...

Rugby World Cup Final

Can someone please help. Anyone know of anywhere in the Cali area where the Rugby World Cup final might be showing next week. Many thanks.

HSBC In Cali?

Is anyone aware of an HSBC Bank anywhere in Cali? I've been told that they're advertising on the Colombian TV channels. Anyone aware of this as it would make my financial life a whole lot easier. Failing that, does anyone know of a Banco de Bogota in Cali? ...
