Thinking about taking the Texas/Mexico/Central America/Colombia road trip on a few bikes with some other friends living here in Medellin. However, the only factor we can't seem to nail down would be the ferry jump from Southern Panama to ANYWHERE beyond the Gap in Colombia... Anyone know where is a popular start/end point for a ferry/boat that can take (among other things) passengers with vehicle cargo? And most importantly, any information on WHO or WHAT COMPANY or something as a lead to f ...
Hey all...scratched the idea of the North coast for late June, and decided to stay a bit closer to Medellin. Anyone have ideas or experiences with the Pacific coast? I'm thinking along the line of NON-TOURISTIC locations, maybe a cabana on a river and waterfall with cool things to do in the area, or little beachfront motel somewhere out of the way. Anyone? ...
Alright, I have been unsuccessful in other attempts so I am giving up and going the route of bringing in one of my bikes from the states on my visa with one of those special permissions. I am pretty sure there are two ways, and wonder if anyone can clear up some of the basic details on each: #1 - Ability to bring your car/motorcycle down for the full term of your visa only until expiration. What kind of visa does that include? Does the vehicle have to go at the end of the visa if it is ren ...
Hello all! I haven't found any post that really knocks out the details I'm looking for... Going to take off with a few amigas to Tayrona for a week or two. I'm going to make the trip by car so I can take in some views and experiences not yet fulfilled since I first started coming to Colombia in 2003 - my first cross-country trip! Only have two problems: 1. What would be the recommended route - Medellin to Santa Marta - anyone know the street system well? I have tried to use several webs ...
Anyone able to quote some viable information on this, or where I can go to get it? I spent all day at a few shops in Exposiciones while they were making some mods to my Super-"Retard" as it was so elegantly put... :) Got to talking to a shop owner who couldnt understand why, if I have the knowledge of bikes and freedom to travel, I didn't bring my used R1 down here instead of buying a new one. I went on to explain my understanding of importation laws, and he said there was an easy way aroun ...
Will be going there next week...have done the research, and friends have made phone calls for me, but I'm looking to get all the input I can for the sake of preparation: 1. Anyone know if they are closed for any reason next week? 2. Is it still 7:30am that the doors open, with a recommendation to arrive early and fight the long lines? 3. Has anyone had PERSONAL experience or have FACTUAL knowledge on changing the "Ocupacion" from Hogar to Trabajo? I am under a solid understanding th ...
Have been keeping up with them, and am almost 100% comfortable with bringing one down after Christmas. So far I have found that they of course will function on other bands, both domestically and internationally, and only require the typical GSM SIM card. Does anyone have any experience trying one out down here in Colombia on a prepago plan via Comcel or a competitor, or maybe know of someone who has? So far I just dont see any reason why it wouldnt, I just havent seen any firsthand info l ...
Hey all...will have an overnight stop in Bogota and really don't plan on doing much while there (Medellin-Bogota-Miami) for less than 12 hours - just sleep. Anyone have an economical hotel suggestion near the airport and relatively safe? Doesn't have to be a top-shelf place, just 25-60k COP is fine. Also, if I do decide to come in earlier that day, how far is Zona Rosa from the airport? Thanks! ...
Hello everyone, Thinking of heading out to Cali for the first time, and interested in taking my first road-trip. Have some friends from Barranquill and Cali arriving for a little fun. Looking to drive, no bus or airplane, direct to Cali from Medellin with no sightseeing along the way. Any recommendations on the route, and where I can find a good map/directions? Any thoughts on the current safety of the route, afternoon-to-evening trip? About how long might the trip take, driving ...
Ok, so I officially did all the post research and came up with nothing official or detailed...so please don't respond with "research the old posts!" jajajaja Now...what I am looking for is updated experiences/information on importing a motorcycle to Colombia. I am looking to purchase a new bike and ship it to me here in Medellin. I am here on a 2-year Visa and have a Cedula Extranjero... 1. Do you pay sales tax in the US since it is not being registered, rather bought and immediately sh ...
I am going to be preparing to live alone in Medellin, starting in October,to avoid the roomate hassle and have some privacy. By doing this, obviously I will now be responsible to start-up and maintain services. I am here on a 2-year visa and have a Cedula Extranjero. From those of you with true knowledge, not just guesswork, what are the complications/possibilities of having the following services in my name as an extranjero living here without Colombian Credit:
1. Gas
2. ...
Looking for someone to help a fellow Colombia-fanatic??? Are any of you out there a Notary in the US or have a friend who is one?
I recently moved to Medellin from Miami via Texas, and am LOVING life here! I live in Envigado now, and am going to school for my TEFL/TESOL certification while also teaching a business English class. The problem is that about a month ago, a few weeks before I left Miami, my car was stolen (which put a HUGE dent in my moving processa & plans!) and no ...
In all seriousness here, my wife and I are arguing over the correct translation of something SIMPLE for a website I am building here at work. I need the correct Spanish version for "Register Now!" - its just a simple button for this clients site, I say its "Registro Ahora!" and she says it's "Registrarse Ahora!"
Honest input please...and as much as I love the fun and bantering here, dont screw me with a joke because it will cost me $$$ one I put the stamp of approval on it and or ...
Just wanted to mention a few things to those of you who might care:

Looks like I am finally making my move in June...will be living in Envigado!
I have a small business here in Miami and do ALL my banking via Citibank. I will be there on a spouse visa, and dont know exactly all the benefits that gives me regarding banking, cedula, insurance, driving, property ownership or anything (chime in if you know, though!)
So this is the question - How do yuo guys recommend transferrance of money to Colombia??? The Citibank there is not ex ...
I dont even know that I want to have to start this search, with so many other things going on in preparation to move to Medellin! So I'm wondering who might have some good information out there.
We have a half-apartment full of stuff left after moving from Barranquilla, but now we will close out where we live in Miami and move to Medellin. We will have about 1/2 apartment of stuff here, and a lot of it I dont want to get rid of - what a great start it would all be to Americanizi ...
Hey everyone... I am looking to see if anyone IN Medellin now, or with firsthand experience, knows of any apartstudios (all services included) in a decent area.
I will be moving down for three months in June for school, and want to go down in a few weeks to check out some housing options - so would like to have contacts and appointments set up first.
I am looking for non-gringo-advertised, non-high-priced apartstudios...not all the $1,000/mo or more apartments list ...
I lived in Dallas before and ventured over hours-deep into Mexico on numerous occasions to do some "mongering". But here is what I would LIKE to try:
I load up my H2, take 2 months off from work, and head South. Here's the catch, I want my destination to be MEDELLIN. Yeah, go ahead and flame me now and tell me how stupid I am but its a serious question! i am a American native, English-speaking with surviveable Spanish skills and a clean passport with history only to Mexico and ...
Ok, I'll do my best to explain it because it has been many years since I visited, but I really liked this hotel when I was here last and I would like to take my wife there. Before you ask or suggest, I do not know the direction, street or exactly what its near...my memory sucks...and I paid in cash so no records on my CC bill:
It is a TALL hotel, high end and brand name like a Marriot or something. I remember it to be all dark brick/cement design with very modern rooms that do n ...
Hey everyone... I am desperately searching, with my wife, for a decent aparte-studio or small furnished apartment in Barranquilla, preferable in the Barrio Boston area or close to calle 72 in the better areas near Prado/Boston. This is mostly for her, and while I am there visiting every few weeks for the next six months. Looking for NOWWWWWW!
PS...dont bother responding with overinflated gringo-prices. We aren't stupid, just looking for additional options via websites.
