Education in Colombia

I saw a question imbedded in another post asking about Colombia education. There are major differences between here and the USA. In the US the best schools, generally are the public schools, they get the most money and pay the hightest wages for teachers. The reverse is true in Colombia. The quality of the private schools varies greatly. Just becasue a school says it is Bilingual that in no way indicates that the students can speak English. The English level of the teachers is VERY important if ...

An Idea

Ruminations from the Emerald Mountain

While sitting here and enjoying life and what it has brought me, I was thinking about so many of the negitive posts that pop up here on PBH. Colombia has brought this tired gringo a bountiful and very pleasant life. I found my little slice of Earth to be friendly and supportive. It is peaceful and healthy. The world of nature around me is much the same. There are few natural dangers here on the Emerald Mountain. I have lived in one of the popular "paradises" of the normal world. I lived in South ...

Another Invitation

Several months ago I invited PBHers to come for a visit to Somondoco. There was no interest at that time. Before the rainy season really kicks in I extend another invite. If you guys and gals want to come for the day or overnight if not too many come. I will supply Coca Cola and a grill. If there is a wish to have me do so I will buy beef here and you can pay me back. Meat here is cheaper and better than in Bogota. Just let me know. ...

More Observations from the side of the Emerald Mountain

It has been disturbing to read all the negative comments from people who are supposed to be Poor but Happy ! That title does fit me and my outlook perfectly. I arrived in Colombia with an open mind, reaady to accept new things and modify my mindset to be comfortable here. I didn't really lke the city of Bogota, and only lived there for a couple of years. I much prefered Chia. I also tried Cali for a year but even though the evenings were nice the days were too hot generally. Yes there are peop ...

Rebutal from Boyaca

Hi There. Since I live in Boyaca, I felt That I should comment on the Food Basket post. First, there is a railroad from Bogota through Tunja. There is a terminal just a short way from the UPTC campus. The problem is that the railroads are just not used very much. Absolutely, poverty is a fact of life in rural Boyaca. I am not a believer that the TLC would neccesarily be bad for rural dwellers. Prices would be lower for producers, yes but their supplies and other foodstuffs would be l ...

Comment on the Relationship between Wall Street and the Colombian Peso

I have noticed that when Wall Street falls the dollar does better against the peso. As a SSA recipient the fluctuation is currently disturbing.

Followup on Orchids

Hello Just a "birth announcement" a Catellya just flowered with 3 beautiful big flowers. They were a little early but beautiful. I expect to see more varieties after the wet season starts. If anyone wants to visit let me know ...

Why is everyone a newbie

All posts I saw tonight were labled as newbies I really don't think I am.

Is there Interest in a Day out of Town?

I have been reading and contributing here on PBH, if there was a general interest I would be happy to provide my finca as a locale for a get together. I can supply coca cola and a grill. If there was interest I could buy some meat if you guys could chip in. Let me know if there is any interest. Somondoco is about 3 hours from Bogota. ...

My Observations on the Level of English in Colombia Schools

I am a retired educator who has taught and been an administrator here in Colombia for about 10 years. I taught at Colegio Nueva Granada, English level was Excellent much of the instruction was in English. After that experience I worked under contract with MEN providing training to English Teachers. I have taught about 2,500 English Teachers in Cundinamarca and Boyaca, I was the director of the National Center for Bilinguism in Tunja, where I taught many courses. I also was the coordinator of Bi ...
