bill230 comments on Which TEFL course in Bogota?

I looked into this last year. At the time, the ISSO web site claimed that upon successful completion you would receive the International Language Academy of Canada certificate in TEFL/TESOL. I wrote to ILAC to confirm this, but they refused to respond to any questions about ISSO.

bill230 comments on Literary Realism

Kalder: I think you might like "The Vortex" (La voragine) by Colombian writer Jose Eustasio Rivera. It is set in eastern/southern Colombia in the early 20th century (written in 1924). An English version is published by Panamericana Editorial Ltd 2001.

bill230 comments on PAISAS: Nice in person, rude as shell in their cars

Robi666: What is the difference between drivers in Barranquilla and Medellin?

bill230 comments on How to take a taxi.

On the coast (Atlantic) taxis don't have meters. It is best to establish the fare before getting into the taxi.

bill230 comments on Bogotà March

Colombiche: There was a photo of the march in Toronto in El Heraldo

bill230 comments on Australian girl kidnapped in El Rodadero Santa Marta

Thanks Robi. Yes I knew about the woman who was released.

bill230 comments on Australian girl kidnapped in El Rodadero Santa Marta

Robi: Did you hear anything about her disappearing or only now that she has been released? also Have you heard anything about the guy that was kidnapped from his finca east of S Marta last fall - still being held?

bill230 comments on Cedula Extranjeria and Visa renew

I had bad information. The expert at MRE says financial info is not required

bill230 comments on Cedula Extranjeria and Visa renew

vicshere - that sounds like a good idea - I'm going to try that GIB - Mine was one year...I was surprised about the income thing too I have been trying to confirm with MRE, but haven't been able to get through by phone. Maybe tomorrow

bill230 comments on CANADIAN PR VISA NOT SUFFICIENT TO FLY THROUGH U.S.

It seems like it would be pretty easy to isolate international transfers in a part of the airport, so that if they wanted to leave the transfer area they would have to go through customs. Isn't that the way most/all European airports work? You don't have to go through Dutch customs if you just land and change planes in Amsterdam - same with Lufthansa, Austrian, Air France..etc, etc Anyone know why the US doesn't work that way? Not enough traffic? Cost? Government nosiness?

bill230 comments on HUGE HOSTAGE SCANDAL!

Catherine: Usually, scandal means disgrace to someone or some organization. It seems strange to call Farc's behaviour scandalous, so I assumed you meant someone else.

bill230 comments on HUGE HOSTAGE SCANDAL!

What a stange story, and tragic, of course. Catherine: what do you mean this is a huge international scandal?

bill230 comments on Fiancee to Canada issues...advice urgently requested!

Panama could also be an option. Colombians can go there without problem and it is easy to get married there.

bill230 comments on hostage release

That is very interesting information Catherine. I have not heard before that FARC are holding 25 Venezuelans. It is surprising that this hasn't been mentioned more - are you sure of this? If it is true, I suppose you have answered your own question.

bill230 comments on I hate to re-ask questions...Where should I live in Colombia?

I think it was slguy that came up with that name ...

bill230 comments on MOVING TO COLOMBIA

Pica Pica are also the offspring of thimble jellyfish. They cause itching. Here is a link about an outbreak of them in Belize. It says they usually appear in the spring in Belize. http://ambergriscaye.com/pages/town/picapica.html

bill230 comments on What is the score with Ingrid Bethancourt?

My question has been answered.

bill230 comments on What is the score with Ingrid Bethancourt?

"What support? Do you mean the 1% (excluding Europeans)?" I was thinking of support from campesinos who might be with them or help them because they don't really have much of an alternative - who might tend to see their governments as corrupt and uncaring or perhaps hostile. I realize that this wouldn't include the hard core. "I just want these foreigners to undestand that the FARC is not fighting for the poor" But are the poor fighting for FARC? ,

bill230 comments on What is the score with Ingrid Bethancourt?

Has much changed in the socio-economic conditions that existed when FARC (or predecessors) was first formed? Has much effort been made in that area? Is there potential for weakening FARC by co-opting their support through economic or social reform?

bill230 comments on Theft from my novia's Bancolombia account

bill230 comments on What's the deal with the COLOMBIANOS?

Rikito or others: Have you received electronics from Amazon (or other US online stores) in Colombia?

bill230 comments on Death (Almost) Hits Home in Medellin

christobeldawg There was an article in the Lancet recently that discusses violence in Colombia(Colombia continues to struggle with violence - by Mike Caesar). You have to sign up to read the whole article (www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140673607616742/fulltext) I don't know whether it is accurate or not. Here is one paragraph "Ross says the culture of violence has roots going all the way back to the Spaniards who conquered the region in search of gold and other riches and the indigenous peoples who engaged in human sacrifice. The wars of the 20th century have only made that culture stronger, Ross says. Other nations, such as neighbouring Ecuador, have similar levels of poverty and social inequality but have never had the same rates of violence, Ross pointed out. “It is the acceptance of violence as normative, not as an aberration, in some parts of Colombia's society, he said. “On the contrary, if you are violent, you are not deviant."

bill230 comments on Colombia vs. Panama

That was my impression too, slguy. I think this happened in the Arenal/western Lago Gatun area.

bill230 comments on Kidnapped in Colombia
