BigO comments on Santa Fe De Antioquia

Beautiful Place I was there last week. Like Litost said it's colonial architecture has been conserved up to the stone roads. It's compared to Cartagena due to it's preserved historic value. If you ever go you'll find a small town adjacent to Colombia's 2nd largest river, el Cauca, in a hot almost arid climate but full of places to enjoy the heat. A lot of small hotels and spas have popped up for business and they are very affordable. I recommend you go in search of your roots, you'll enjoy it. By the way the town's weekends are very lively and there are other towns in the vicinity to explore.

BigO comments on Salsa in Medellin & an etiquette question

There are a couple of Salsa spots I Recommend a place located at the "rompoi" de la Aguacatala. The name escapes me but it is located on the mid level of the round-point. There are actually like 3 different little spots here. 1 is the salsa spot I'm talking about, the other 2 are tropical music spots.

The other spot is located on la avenida 33 like 2 blocks west of la 80 on a corner of la 33. I'm sorry but the name escapes me as well. At this spot it's ladies night on Thursdays and we all know what that means. Yeah, plenty of women on their own looking to dance Salsita.

I'm going to try to get the names and post them.

And besides the ones I mentioned there are plenty more.

BigO comments on Colombian Customs @ Medellin

Thanx for all your comments guys. I knew about the Playstation piracy, but last I checked they're cheaper here in the states ($150) then like $100K (Col) to have the chip placed. DVD players are so cheap here as well, I saw one in target for ~$40, that I just think they would be great gifts. I doubt I can beat those prices down in Medallo. Great tip on taking the stuff unpackaged I think I'll use that one. And about the regions I'm not sure I can get a DVD player here in the states that'll play other Region's DVDs.

Hey Diana, don't be so modest, I'm sure those customs guys are chatting you up for a reason. C'mon how about that picture.

Yo! Spig, can't wait to catch a football game at your place. If not a Sunday there is always the traditional Monday night game. End of September, Medallo here I come.

BigO comments on flower delivery in Cali

I've got two sites for you LaTiendadeLasRosas.com & RegalaUnaRosa.com

They are not based in Cali they're in Bogota, but they deliver in 2 days to any place in Colombia. I've been using them for 2 years and their roses are spectaculer to say the least. I've even had them ship here to NY. 1 dozen ~$30 Dol.

BigO comments on In Medellin and ... melancholic

Hey Spig... I'll be in town the end of September and be looking you up for the Jets game. I've heard your the football spot. Hopefully it'll workout where I can catch a DIM game at el estadio before hand. Any ways just a heads up.
Sen, I feel your pain. If you don't have a social circle Mon-Wed can be tough. Hey even with local friends it's tough because there in work weekday mode. Come Thurs, you'll find plenty of night life. In the meantime try to make some friends or take a mini trip to one of the outer pueblos. If you like hot weather go to Copacabana, Barbosa, San Jeronimo o Sta. Fe de Antioquia and stay in a Estadero with a nice pool. El Quimbaya en San Jeronimo is very nice and cheap last I went ~4 years ago.

Otherwise checkout the malls for movies or all the nice restaurants that are cheap by US standards, i.e. Sushi Light in el Tesoro Mall or Palos de Moguer in front of Oviedo, among others.

Enjoy.

BigO comments on i am here in medellin and..

Age of Consent is 17 Yeah Andy (& all others)- the age in NY is 17. Just check the local news about the Mom screwing her son's school friends. She has a couple of counts of satutory rape except the 17 year olds because it's the legal age of consent.
FYI

BigO comments on Buying Computers

Hey, thanx again guys. Expat I think I've seen a bunch a computer shops in Monterrey (mall), so I'll check it out next time I'm in town. Webmanco it'd be great if you let me know what you find out. Have fun in the festival and try not to hurt your neck lookin at the paisitas

BigO comments on Colombian Communities in NY: Queens, Jackson Heights, Roosevelt Ave.

Hey Antioqueñita I'd listen to BxUnica & Cali373. They sound like they know what's going on now in Colombian Heights unlike everybody else who are stuck in the past. Natives for a restaurant & D'Antigua to hang out are great options. If you were from Cali I'd tell you to go to Chango were the Salsa Juanchito style is pumpin. And yes Natives is open for breakfast where I recommend Arepa con carne Asada. Off the chain.

BigO comments on Is anyone familiar with the Boston neighborhood of Medellin?

I lived my whole teenage life in Boston Medellin and recently went back after 9 years. Like most of Medellin it's a lot safer than it was a decade ago. There has been plenty of construction of small attractive apartment buildings around the area. It was always a quaint attractive area but has become even prettier with the development. As your wife probably recalls the neighborhood is close to el Centro and with all the new barrios farther up in the hills it has really become a desireable middle class neighborhood.
Sorry about the lack of pictures, you're just goona' have to check it out for yourselves. Don't worry, it's safe and just like it's preached throughout the forums, just use your common sense and awareness.

C'mon man, what's the new password? Curiosity is killing me.

I don't think there are any boxing clubs but there is a departemental league or liga Antioqueña de boxeo in Medellin. Last I knew it was located under the Soccer Stadium Stands or it's exterior perimeter. If you're in to boxing and in Medellin that's probably your best place to start and ask around.
Traditionally boxing is prcticed a lot more in the coastal cities of Colombia like Cartagena & Barranquilla.
Hope it helps.

BigO comments on Gringa or Colombiana

So what's wrong with being Gringo in Colombia and Colombian in gringolandia? It works for me. Chicks always like foreigners. Yo soy lo que mas me convenga en el momento. I always say I'm 100% Paisa & 100% New Yorker, which makes me 200% Bacano.

Arepas in the streets of Manhattan? Where? You must mean in a bodega because as far as I know can you get hot arepas from street vendors only in Queens.
By the way Colombia is #1 period.
