SOOOO, yesterday, in the local paper El Heraldo, was a BIG article about this situation and in the article, the hotel resort owners who have properties on the beaches in and near Santa Marta are saying the coal shipments will destroy their tourist trade and put the ...

YOU BETTER SHUT YOUR MOUTH IN VENEZUELA

If you are planning to visit, better take notice !! Sun Jul 22, 8:51 PM ET CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez said Sunday that foreigners who publicly criticize him or his government while visiting Venezuela will be expelled from the country. Chavez ordered officials to closely monitor statements made by international figures during their visits to Venezuela — and deport any outspoken critics. "How long are we going to allow a person — from any country in the world — t ...

Time to get PERMANENT CEDULA EXTRANJERIA - RESIDENCE VISA

Does anyone have recent experience getting their cedula - HOGAR visa changed from temporary to PERMANENT. These idiots at the Barranquilla office of DAS are insisting I need FIVE years residence to get permanent residence status. I explained to them that my visa was HOGAR-FAMILY since I am married to a Colombian Citizen and that when I renewed my visa in Bogota back in 2006 Bogota told me that in one more year, for a total of THREE, I could apply for permanent residence status. Now to c ...

NEW CARS

Just for grins and giggles, does anyone here in Colombia know what the profit margin is on the new cars sold here in Colombia.

I realize that the TAX is 25% for cars and 18% for SUV´s and light trucks but aside from the tax, I am damn curious to know what %%%% the dealers here have to play with when selling.

In the U.S, depending on the car and not counting the holdback and other factory incentives, the dealers usually have about 4% to play with.

E ...

How do YOU Celebrate Christmas in Colombia?

Obviously, Christmas in America is very commercialized, lots of presents and "Material items".

Since moving here, I found my wife's family and friends place MORE VALUE on spending time with each other, placing decorations and lights around the house, building nativity scenes and actually celebrating the HOLIDAY with each other. Presents seem to be SECONDARY to the aformentioned.

So I am curious how YOU celebrate christmas in COLOMBIA.

Am I unique or ...

Which PUEBLO's In Colombia ????

Ok, over the past several months I have read posts from people who say things like "I live here in *****, a really nice little town away from the big cities, beautiful scenery, great food, old style culture" ect ect ect.

Now for the question. For those of you who LIVE THERE, which Pueblo's are you living in, what big city are they near and why do you enjoy living there?? Do you get water 24/7 or only a few hours a day? Electric service reliable or out for hours at a time? Ect.

Avion Bird Flu Pandemic

I thought it would be good to discuss this subject, ESPECIALLY for those of us currently living in Colombia.

As of now, the only treatment is a drug named " Tamiflu", generid name "Oseltamivir". This is not to say another treatment won;t be created, but I can assure you with a 110% guarantee, the U.S. Govt is currently stocking up on this drug to the tune of millions of doses. If you do some research on this drug, you will find the dosage and time sensativity for taking with regar ...

Bogota Priest Drinks Vodka at the Pulpit

A new priest in BOGOTA at his first mass was so nervous he could hardly speak.

After mass he asked the monsignor how he had done.

The monsignor replied, " When I am worried about getting nervous on the pulpit, I put a glass of Vodka next to the water glass. If I start to get nervous, I take a sip."

The following Mass, he took the monsignor's advice.

At the beginning of the sermon, he got nervous and took a drink.

He ...

Message from the U.S. Embassy in Colombia

Due to recent security incidents involving U.S. citizens in Bogotá and
other urban areas in Colombia, the Embassy reminds American citizens in
Colombia of the importance of paying attention to their personal
security. Although there is no indication that Americans have been targeted

You don't know Jack Schitt ?

You don't know Jack Schitt?

Many people are at a loss for a response when someone says, "You don't know Jack Schitt." Now you can intellectually handle the situation.

Jack is the only son of Awe Schitt and O. Schitt. Awe Schitt, the fertilizer magnate, married O. Schitt, a partner of Kneedeep &. Schitt Inc. In turn, Jack Schitt married Noe Schitt, and the deeply religious couple produced 6 children: Holie Schitt, Fulla Schitt, Giva Schitt, Bull Schitt, and the twin ...

Take a moment and THINK

As I sit here in my home in Colombia and watch the coverage of the total devastation from hurricane Katrina on CNN, I am almost speechless. It makes me realize that despite all my gripes and complaints, I AM LUCKY. I see some of my countrymen who have lost everything, their lives destroyed.

So, despite the times we complain about something we don’t like, when one takes inventory of their life, in the big picture, we are ALL lucky !

Just a thought ...

Hurricanes, Tornado's & Natural Disasters in Colombia

I AM CURIOUS IF OTHERS HAVE ANY INFORMATION REGARDING THE HISTORY OF "NATURAL DISASTERS" OCCURING IN COLOMBIA

After Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, I started to do some checking on the history of Hurricane's and tornado's in Colombia. I was not able to find any archived news articles about past storms hitting the northern coast of Colombia or any significant history of cataogry 2, 3, 4 or 5 tornado's.

After speaking with my wife, who has lived in Barranquilla all her l ...

State of Emergency

THOUGHT THIS WAS AN INTERSTING NEWS ARTICLE POSTED TODAY BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS. WONDER IF TEXAS WILL SO THE SAME. Also wonder how this will affect people of "Latin decent" who are legally in these States ie: Being stopped and questioned more often than before, asked for their DOCUMENTS ect. This is probably spark a debate, but I think this is one reason America needs a FEDERAL ID CARD, similar to what we have here in Colombia. ID card in your possession, NO PROBLEM, NO ID card in possession, o ...

WHY "Gringo"

Ok, this should generate some interesting responses. Since I am a "Gringo", I am curious, WHERE or HOW did the term "Gringo" originate? I am just curious what others have heard of been told. I get called gringo all the time and when I lived in Texas, the Mexicans always refered to us as gringo's, so the term seems to cross several Latin American countries. I DO NOT want to start any arguments over this post, I AM JUST CURIOUS HOW THE TERM GOT STARTED. ...

Why it's better to Live in COLOMBIA

I have had lots of friends and other people ask me "Why do you enjoy living in Colombia?, it can;t be safer than America".

Well, here is part of a news story I just got off the internet (AP). THIS is the kind of MICKEY MOUSE BULL S**T that is going to cause us (Americans) to suffer more 911 style attacks. AFTER it happens again, everyone is going to ask, "G, how did we end up taking up the A*S again?". I will NEVER understand WHY WE AS AMERICANS GET ALL UPSET ABOUT SOMEONE LOOKIN ...

Central Amer Free Trade, HURTS COLOMBIA?

Pres Bush signed the Central American Free Trade agreement today, so for those of you who majored in Economics, is Colombia and it's economy going to be hurt by this deal? Am curious since it now appears the countires in C. America will have an edge on S. American countries. Seems this new agreement lifts the trade barriers for the C. American Countires while the countries in S. America will still have the same old trade barriers in place.

On another thread, someone posted that C ...

SCREWED by FINANCE RATES

Ok, I need some help with this one. When I moved here I knew the interest rates to finance things we high, however has no idea they could legally stick it up your back side without even the courtesy of offering you some Vaseline first.

Here is the deal, walking into the Honda dealer yesterday, found a motorcycle I wanted, said ok how much? They said, 5.490.000. I said fair enough, I’ll take it. Was goint to pay cash however the salesman Man said, “Ok good, if you like option t ...

Motorcycles & Scooters

If you OWN/USE a motorcycle or moped/scooter in Colombia, I would be interested in hearing your opinions about what you like/don;t like about what you own, if you had it to do over again, would you have purchased something different ect.

Am thinking about a scoot for around town and at most, an occasional trip from Barranquilla to Santa Marta or Cartagenia. ...

Falling DOLLAR, Strong PESO

Ok, here is the 64 million question. Anyone hear of any economic indicators that are forcasting a rise in the dollar or a FALL in the peso? Or do ya think the Colombian Peso has STABALIZED and is going to remain where it is for quite some time in the future. ...

NEW CONSULAR IN BARRANQUILLA

Don;t know if this has been posted yet, but the Consular's office in BARRANQUILLA now appears to have a NEW, FULL TIME CONSULAR.

For those who don;t know, the old Consular died over a year ago and the office in Barranquilla had been without a Consular since that time, flying someone in from the Embassy in Bogota one day each month (if we were lucky)

Anyway, the man's name is ALFREDO GONZALEZ RUBIO. So if you are needing Consular services in Barranquilla, your life ...

Mail Service from Colombia

Has anyone found a RELIABLE mail service to send documents FROM Colombia to the USA other than Federal Express or UPS? (More economical)

Need to get some documents to the States but they don;t need to be there in 2-3 days. Since Colombia's "Regular mail" sucks, was wondering if anyone has found other reliable services.

THANKS !! ...

NEW CARS, Lower Prices?
