aussiesam comments on COLOMBIAN SEVEN WONDERS ok i am going to play the devils advocate here. did Pablo really kill thousands?? thousands...that is a bit far fetched isn't it?? he killed anyone who went against him and tried to stop him or get in his way. But he gave them the choice..what was his saying?? 'plata or lead' so not only did he give you the choice but he also payed you. So the smart people lived. when my mother said eat your dinner or u cant watch tv..i had to make a choice. I chose to eat because i wanted to watch tv. now before he started going crazy and using bombs he built schools, churches, football fields and a lot of houses for the poor (which was more than the government was doing for the people at the time). he only started using bombs (where innocent people were killed) when the American government wanted to extradite him and other drug lords to the United States. Again he said if the government passes extradition laws he will blow stuff up. So he provided that choice. Sadly extradition was put in place and that's when he went crazy (a horrible time). For a while the extradition laws were ceased and so did the bombings. Now there is just as much if not more cocaine coming out of Colombia today and the people responsible aren't helping the poor, providing infrastructure or doing any good with the money... and they too are killing a lot of people so what does all this mean... i don't condone for one minute the evil things Pablo did. Not for one second. But I also don't think it isn't as black and white as some mentioned. and for right or wrong Pablo will always be in grained in the history of Colombia. His grave site is visited by thousands of tourists every year. Some Colombians have photos of him in their houses and continue to pray for him on a daily basis. Others can not stand him. Personally i think the whole saga is sad. As long as drugs are illegal criminals and violence will continue to flourish full stop. You just have to look at Mexico.

Si i tend to think Bevan is the real deal. as much as it saddens me. the good thing is they generally don't tend to travel (especially somewhere as far and obscure as Colombia) due to financial difficulties, motivation and complete lack of worldly knowledge and it is for these reasons i can't see Bevan making it... don't get me wrong I am devastated Bevan. I would love to meet you.

aussiesam comments on Pain management in Bogota Good luck. Doctors down here are very reluctant to prescribe controlled substances. They will put you onto other pain killers first. Which can be good but nothing like the ones with narcotics in them. I have a friend who suffers from anxiety and uses low doses of valium to cope. He too cant even get a doctor in Colombia to prescribe that for him. Furthermore with all the instances of celebrities dying from and/or abusing these drugs doctors are less inclined to prescribe them. Unfortunately those who suffer are the normal people that genuinely need these drugs and use them responsibly. I think your only hope is to find a Colombain friend that is friends with a good and understanding doc. Otherwise i wish you luck. Stock up before you come.
