counterpunch and Chile Dear Ms Desideria: I have been to Chile and I must inform you that there is room to expand. Have you ever driven from Santiego to Las Condes or to beautiful Vina del Mar? Futher north or south there is room to expand but, it seem as everyone wants to live in dirty Santiego and I do mean the streets and especially the air polution. The people, ie: to me, they look like americans, all diffrent types except very very few fat people. The traffic situation is something to experience, and the reason is that they have not put good resourses into their transportation system, therefor they are not going anywhere until this is resolved.The rapid trasit system is following another vehicle at 50 miles per hour with a space of two or three feet maximum between each vehicle. The streets in general have never been widened in the history of Santiego, with very few exceptions. Only wide enough for two oxcarts and a skinny sidewalk on each side of the street. Like most Latinamerican Countries, those in power have raided and raped the money from the government. High terrifs do not benefit the people, only the government. If it costs 50-100% tax to import earth moving equiptment or vehicles do you think anyone is going to make capital investments in that country? NO. When the peoples of Latinamerica wake up and get an education to discover that it is their responsibility to do what is correct for them and their country perhaps they will no longer be whores for the American Welfare. I am really surprised that they continue to accept the poverty that they love, otherwise they would take responsibility for their plight. One cannot blame the International Corporations for paying off government officials, they are just whores for the labor and natural resourses that the Latinamericans are willing sell. I suggest that we must all wake up. Be advised: A fair employer or buyer will pay a fair price, if not he is not the one to do business with. Chile will continue to struggle just like all the rest.
