ARMacleod comments on an unexpectied trip to Cartagena

Crazygirl? Sweetheart, Whatever you are looking for I hope that you will find it. I am sorry for my apparent negative attitude, but the manner in which I read your mail is that you seem somewhat naive?

It is good that your eyes sparkle with anticipation, I hope and pray that all your dreams will be fulfilled and that you will have a happy and wonderful life.

Are you kidding? Ever country is so different. What has a low life in Colombia to lose if his attempt goes wrong?

What have you to lose if your attempt to thwart his attempt goes wrong?

You Albatross, are not in New England. New York or new Hampshire, you are in a country which does not recognise the niceties of normal civil or statute law. You are in a country where everyone is looking out for his/herself, and that includes the political, police and civil service.

Advice; live with the system , or, go home.

ARMacleod comments on Hair raising request.

Cannot help with the solution, but... But I am glad to hear that everything went well and i am sure that it will do in the future.

I think that someone will remember a week or so ago in a newspaper an American has developed a 'fantastic' (tongue in cheek) new system which removes a flap to a new location, I suppose it would be a little like a living graft transplant.

Meanwhile a 'piece' may be a temporary solution? Best of luck anyway.

ARMacleod comments on Slur used against Colombians in Italy

pax vobiscum Racism is a self degenerating form of envy and/or resentment, it is incorrectly justified by the more moronic people who see anyone with something that they do not have. If the other person is of a different race, the colour is of no consequence, then that justifies their resentment even more.

In its modern form, racism evolved in tandem with European exploration and conquest of much of the rest of the world, and especially after Christopher Columbus reached the Americas.

As new peoples were encountered, fought, and ultimately subdued, theories about "race" began to develop, and these helped many to justify the differences in position and treatment of people whom they categorized as belonging to different and usually inferior races.

Just like this forum, it starts with a single word in some cases, that evolves into a heated sentence, argument, smack, fight, shot and the chain has started.

Every war in the world has started because someone wanted something that someone else had. Mr A Schicklegruber springs to mind, etc, etc.

I shall say this once more, this is the ‘friendly talkzone' If you cannot keep a civil tongue in your head then you should turn the page.

Incidently; the need to resort to expletives and anger simply shows that you have lost the plot, and is a show of particularly low intelligence.

However I remain sirs, your most obedient servant.

These are terrorists, by any name. I may be wrong of course, but if they are alive, then they will be released eventually. The FARC would have no benefit in holding them indefinitely after such a long period of time, financially or otherwise.

The two possibilities remaining are 1. They have succumbed to the mental indoctrination of their captors, or 2. They have not accepted the objectives of their captives and have paid the ultimate consequence.

Whatever, I live in the hope that they will be released alive and well.

Another reason Europe (EEC) has committed itself to purchasing coffee and other foods from the poorer countries through the ‘Fair Trade' system. The idea is to guarantee a better deal for growers in developing countries. i.e. Africa and the like

It could be argued that Colombia has a large proportion of poor people, but, it is not seen on the other hand as a developing country.

A recent programme on the Sky Travel network showed the plight of Colombias coffee growers, it was heartbreaking to see those impoverished children and fathers crying because they could not feed them.

Magic? what nonsense! Outward appearance:
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I think it is wrong to describe anyone as being ‘ugly'. Some people thought my ex wife was ugly, in fact people used to make the sign of the cross when they passed her on the street. I know that she is beautiful.

I have never gone to bed with an ugly woman. (I have awakened with some though)

An old army friend of mine used to say when I asked him, "why do you always pick fat and to say the least, ‘homely' females to go out with?"
His reply was "they are grateful and they keep their mouths shut"

Magic?
What nonsense! Look at the adds at the top of this page'

‘WANT TO CAST YOUR OWN SPELLS'
‘Try your own witch doctor spell kits'

Good Grief! There is no such thing as magic, it is total nonsense and goes against all rational thought or reality, an irrational, groundless inexplicable and unsubstantiated belief in the para normal. It is a delusional false held belief contrary to any logic.

In a country such as the interior and largely unexplored areas of Central Africa for example normal behaviour is the belief in such absurdity, but in civilised countries, there is no excuse for this.

My experience of such behaviour was in Bogota. My gf at the time is a very intelligent person, an accountant and civil Engineer. When she came to England and we went to my daughters house, there were three cats in residence and a dog that was tolerated (by the three cats). She refused to enter the house, she eventually informed me of the reason why. Her niece gave birth to a child who was badly deformed and facially unappealing. The hag who lived in the same building told her it was a spell put on the mother of the child by her cat which made the child into a monster. The father took the cat outside and cut its head off.

Where do you draw the line?

Anyway, I have to sign off now as I have to be asleep before ten, the tooth fairy is going to leave me sixpence under my pillow, and he only does that for good little boys.

ARMacleod comments on What do you think constitutes fluency?

It all depends on your individual requirements If: ¡Una cerveza por favor! is understood, that will satisfy the casual visiting jughead. on the other hand you will possibly need more when applying for a post teaching advanced physics.

I have made a real effort in trying to grasp the normal pleasantries of any country that I visit. To me that is more important than being linguistically perfect in any single language, (including English) In my simple opinion, to be able to say "Thank you" and "Please" have to be the most important phrases in all languages.

ARMacleod comments on Environment...Does anybody care?

There is little personal or political will.

If its yellow, let it mellow
If its brown, wash it down. (From the film Meet the Fockers)

A 1 or two lt plastic bottle or a couple of clean bricks in the cistern will save lots of water

Turn off tap when not used, like in between brushing of teeth.

There are TV sets etc on standby, lights on needlessly etc.

There are hundreds of simple things that can be done by ordinary folk, for example if everyone dropped the temperature control down by 2 Deg C, it would save over a million tonnes of pollutant gasses from being released into the air.

Will it happen? not a chance, generally people just do not give a damn, it is as simple as that, the odd few who do give a damn, think that their minute effort will make no difference.

I lived in Oxford up until about three months ago, there we had recycling systems in place that segregated just about everything. Having moved to Swindon (about 30 miles 51 km) away, there is no segregation of anything, however the council taxes are lower, what is that all about when small district councils can override the wishes of central government.

Did the USA sign Koyota? if not, why not? Perhaps in this case, complacent insularism. I am not knocking the USA, it is just a statement of basic fact, which is sad because the great loss of American life during the worst storms in many years have been put down to ‘global warming'.

The fact is, until the various governments have the will to act, no one else will bother.

Only a few years ago. An, now past friend of mine had her sister machine gunned down on the steps of a building in the Plaza Simon Bolivar.

Her only brother was crushed to death between two cars which did not stop.

Her son had his ass blown across the street by an ordinance device one door down from his home. That's three out of four of the family.

Yes I went there and walked through Central Bogota at midnight. She told me it has become much better now after the last two or so years?

Have the people become so used to and numbed by the very real violence that it simply seems quite normal to them?

Anyway it will not make me change my mind about returning to Colombia, I have never and will never give in to scum like these terrorists. If it has my name on it, I will get it sooner or later. (Hopefully later).

About the genealogy thing. I am very saddened by the thought that two of my five children are German and my youngest is Chinese, I wonder if my other two will still talk to them? ARMacleod comments on Colombiche And Adrimm really left?

Child prostitution statistics Kernow62 my friend. Google the subject header above (child prostitution statistics) and I will guarantee that you will be sickened at what you find.

And yes, in every country in the world. Some keep it under wraps for various reasons, paedophile politicians, police, priests etc.

Some will argue that in many cases the children chose to enter this dubious profession, I ask you this. At what time or age in the childrens life do the parents cease to become responsible for the activities of their children, should they be tried for their lack in accepting this obvious responsibility, are they not condoning this behaviour?

Lack of parental responsibility is akin to collusion in the crime and should be treated as such. Yes or NO?

Incidently, I am willing to be chief judge and executioner in these cases. (And incidentally in many other cases of other despicable crimes against humanity in general).

Sorry about harping on in many cases but I believe that the spread of liberalism, political correctness, the ‘swinging hippy crappy sixties' is ultimately responsible for the rise in delinquency that we have now.

The UK and USA is rapidly becoming a Mecca for malcontents, it is now illegal for parents to chastise their children manually, the suggested manner of sitting down and having a ‘heart to heart' is garbage, it does not work, has never worked and never will.

Sorry for the extended discourse on the subject, but, if the present trends continue to pacify the hand wringing element, where will we be in ten or twenty years from now?

I worry, mucho, mucho.

Kudzu? I thought I was reasonably well travelled and informed but I have never heard of such a plant. Is it for real?

By the write ups, it sounds like a life saver for some remote areas, i.e. Sahara and similar.

Deuterium which is found in sea water has the power to keep the world supplied with energy ad infinitum, check it out, the JET project. (Joint European Taurus) = A nuclear powered Merc and you only need to fill up once?

I am going to enjoy the luxury of the future, the downside is that I will probably have to wait another fifty years to reap the benefit. And assuming that Iran has not been the cause of the obliteration of mankind.

ARMacleod comments on ethanol fuel production starts in Colombia

Ethanol (alcohol) This is just one of the possibilities. My car can be converted to run on alternative fuels quite cheaply.

The agricultural industry in the UK is in the doldrums with farmers getting huge subsidies for leaving their fields fallow. (EEC obligation). These fields could be turned to the production of rape seed oil and all the other kinds of plants that can be used to produce fuel.

It will not happen! The government needs the revenue and a justification to go to war for oil?
Am I wrong?........... possibly, but.. Can anyone tell me why, and justify their answer?

ARMacleod comments on The Bravest Colombian in my Book

How sad! I have come across all kinds in my fairly long life and the nicest people generally are those at some kind of physical disadvantage. I always try to help in some way, but, it is not always accepted, for obvious reasons.

On the other hand I look at some of the malcontents around me and feel nothing but loathing, Oh god, how I wish I had the power to reverse the situation, there would be a great increase in the number of disabled and a nill return on the statistics for the previously disabled.

I don't know if it was just me, or my personal situation when I was in Colombia: I cannot remember encountering many people with the disabled problem?

I hope their god will bless them in any case.

My stated facts, although interesting at times, are generally irrevelant.

ARMacleod comments on Why?!!!

Easy answer. Political and corporate, justifiable and extortionate corruption.

Duty is paid on almost everything that is taken into any country, the amount of duty is directly proportionate to what the populace is prepared to pay for the item and how much debt the government has to find for its never fulfilled pre election promises.

Similarly, the importing companies have to make as much £ $ € etc as they can to justify their high incomes and the expectations of the shareholders.

One example is, for example; whisky produced in Scotland, the government cut is somewhere in the region of 80 to 90%. For a bottle of 12 year old malt, Glenmorangie, the brewers get 0.25 pence, the 1 lt bottle costs around £ 25.00 ??

It is the old story, the rich get richer and the poor get pregnant

Me? Could not care less, I am leaving this money grasping country and going back to the old country.

Which old country?.....Any old bloody country.

How the Jews got ten Commandments God spoke to the Arabs, "I have commandments to make your lives better"
The arabs asked for an example.
"Thou shalt not kill" expostulated the mighty redeemer.
"No thanks, that would upset our plans for the future" said the Arabs.

God then spake forth to the Colombians, "I have commandments to make your lives better"
"Que" said the Colombians, Por ejemplo?
"Thou shalt not steal" quoted the great egalitarian.
"Gracias no, how could we exist without pilfering"

He tried the French next and gave them the example " thou shalt not commit adultery"
"Mon deu Monsignor, Non, that's what we were made for in the first place" spake forth the frogs?

After many attempts he finally, in desperation approached the Jews. He gave out the standard introduction.
"How much do these commandments cost already?" asked the Jews
"They are free" stated the almighty munificent benefactor.
"We will take ten on approval" was the answer.

ARMacleod comments on URIBE FOR REELECTION IN 2010 (JUST NOT NOW!!!)

Just a thought. If the gentlemans ideals are not carried out, why do you think this is?

One man at the top will quickly fall if those below him pull the rug from under his feet.

If those at the lower levels are also corrupt, he will have to tread softly. These things take time and it is only when you have the full backing of those who put you there in the first place, that you will be able to make any headway.

In other words, the guy who is at the front is like a horse, it is the people behind who pull the reins that guide the head.

If you study each thread you will see a point of view of an individual, much of which is brought about by that persons personal ideological circumstances. Not the situation bettering the country as a whole.

Again I am sorry that I have to stand on peoples toes, but, how many of these laymen lawyers etc, have done anything positive, how many are prepared to stand up and be counted?

I am aware that this site is intrinsically concerned with Colombia, But, look deeper. Every country in Suramerica is having the same problem to a greater or lesser extent. Am I wrong?

There is a programme on the UK TV at the moment, eleven disabled persons, some in wheelchairs, paralysed, without limbs, legs , blind, etc. they are travelling overland from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Uruguay to Chile. They have to have an armed guard with them.

Every country in Suramerica is unstable, this, when you consider the size and population has to be remarkable.

Is this a suramerican disease? And are the people there just totally physically, politically and morally corrupt?

Sensible answer from someone please, but, unless you have personally done something positive to redress the situation, I have no wish to hear from you. As I am an ‘ouslander' I will also shut up on this matter.

It is a matter of proportion Having been brought up in Glasgow in the worst of the violent years, 1940-1958 (Scotland for the geographically challenged) I can confirm that the knife and the razor are a major weapon in these areas.

However I can also confirm that fewer people die or are seriously injured in these attacks as they are more gang and drunken status related.

I also know that there were virtually no mass attacks on anyone, it was generally more of a one to one confrontation.

I swear on the life of my children that there was no old lady mugging, 10 to 1 beatings etc when I was a lad.

Perhaps in spite, things have changed, maybe people are more cowardly than before, perhaps there is less respect for others now than there has been in the past. I wonder why?

I am quite sure that you all know the answer, and you will not admit it. Am I right or am I wrong?

How much do you know about the FARC, the guerilla. Similarly, what do you know of all of the other factionist groups that exist in your society?

How about the thieves, racketeers, liberalists, human rights activists, gangsters, animal rights activists, and the hundreds of people and groups who have an axe to grind in your country.

How many drunken drivers kill and maim?
How about the bosses who put workers in jeopardy because of the dangerous work practices?
How many people in your nation die each year of pneumonultramicroscopicsilicavalcanosiosis? If you take these figures into consideration, I think that you may need to re evaluate your priorities?

I think that everyone, left or right in thought because of inherited or circumstance trends, has something to add.

How many are prepared to do anything advance their cause?

ARMacleod comments on looking for 'Utopia'

Gracias everyone.... For the information gleaned. I lived in the north of Germany (Luneburg area) for eight years and had to sleep in a mosquito net every night for about nine months of every year. My face would swell up and eyes close if I got even one bite on the forehead. That's why I am a bit paranoid about the little fiends, I noticed that they had little square heads and found it hard to pronounce things like; "ve vill vont villies" and so on. There is one part of the old bod that I hung out in hope, but no luck there.

I am into Deet and this seems to work fairly well. The ‘anti malarial' tablets just made me puke. I like the garlic thing, I love the stuff. My previous employer says he could tell when I was within 3.5 miles of our office.

Health care is a very small concern, other than crappy food belly tremors, I have never been sick in my life. I am as fit as a flea and exercise every day, especially now that I am retired.

I had no trouble at all in Bogota from that point of view, but for personal reasons I do not wish to go there.

Anyway I will have a look at the places you have named and try to make a decision. La Vega, etsupendo, la sol, el vino, me gusta mucho.

By the way, Utopia, Valhalla, Nirvana, Glasgow, Cairo, they are all the same thing: Paradise!

Fernardo Would you have us all regress back to Dickensian times?

Perhaps we should all denote 75% of our wages and benefits to the underprivileged in those places. Then we would be on an even footing. Then they would rush out and buy our goods???

The only way that we can help those who are less fortunate than ourselves is to help them. Not by sending cash and purchasing shoddy goods, that has been going on in Africa and they have not progressed at all, in fact they have gone downhill even more since the aid to them has increased. And I mean ALL of Africa.

It is the political will in a country that has to change. Again I will state: Look at those countries who have a free society, who have democratically elected leaders and where there are those systems in place which you seem to decry, i.e. Social security etc.

If the will of the governments were to change in a way that encourages capitalism and spreads the wealth mote fairly we will have a world of more equality as is being ‘tried' in the EEC.

There is one other way, but it does not always work. Mr Castro, De Gaulle, and similar so called ‘beneficial dictators' those who are so introverted that they do not see beyond their own political ideals or beyond the borders of their own country.

Look at the USA, UK, Germany, France, and now Spain, Portugal etc.

Who has got it right? We cannot help those other poorer nations by destroying ourselves.

Live in peace, and also, give a piece to others.

My stated facts, although interesting at times, are generally irrevelant.

ARMacleod comments on CHINA INC AND IT'S ECONOMIC IMPACT ON THE WORLD

Fernardo Would you have us all regress back to Dickensian times?

Perhaps we should all denote 75% of our wages and benefits to the underprivileged in those places. Then we would be on an even footing. Then they would rush out and buy our goods???

The only way that we can help those who are less fortunate than ourselves is to help them. Not by sending cash and purchasing shoddy goods, that has been going on in Africa and they have not progressed at all, in fact they have gone downhill even more since the aid to them has increased. And I mean ALL of Africa.
