How bad is USPS/ regular mail?

I need to send a few books to Colombia. Having read through the old post from a few year back, I recall that a few people swear by regular ol' USPS mail (Clavo?) and other have horror stories related to it. Has the regular postage in Colombia improved at all, or is it as bad as ever? And if one were to send a package, does it improve the odds of it actually arriving at its destination by sending it Express or Priority Mail, or is 1st class mail good enough? ...

I already have been going to university here in the states but am a few credits shy of my bachelors. Any advice as to which school I should try to get into and how likely it would be for me to get in a few weeks before classes start? Also, which school operate on the calendar with the new semester starting in January or February?

The answer to the later quest ...
