AmyEnMontreal comments on Another airline question because fiance is moving

If she has a return ticket, it doesn't matter where she's returning from, just as long as she's going out of the country. As was said before, if she has a Visa that allows her to stay permenantly, then she won't need any return tickets to show at immigration, but she probably will have to show it at the Delta counter in Bogota.

If her visa doesn't allow her to stay permenantly, then she must show a reutnr ticket to immigration upon arrival. Immigration doesn't care where the departure is from, all they care is that the ticket date is for a date within the range she is allowed to stay. So if her ticket is for August, and she must leave in July, the ticket will be invalid, but if she's allowed to stay past her ticket date, or up to the date her ticket is set to, then immigrations in Atlanta won't care she's departing from Miami.

Especially considering she's connecting onto a flight to Miami, but even if she wasn't, she could be getting to her outbound departure point through another means (bus, train, separate domestic flight) so they won't care.

I hope I didn't overload you with too much info, I tend to do that.

:P

AmyEnMontreal comments on Information on flights please

Cypher, it all depends on what airline you're flying. some airlines are more lenient than others on weights.

Try calling the air carrier you'll be flying to Colombia, and make sure you ask what the weight allowance is on the flight you're taking. If you're connecting (most likely, you are) ask what the weight allowance is for BOTH flights, and then don't pack more than the flight with the least allowance. Sometimes, it depends on the airplane (larger airplanes allow heavier bags), so if you're taking a small airplane and a big airplane, then you'll have to pack for the small airplane's allowance.

Call the airline (or airlines) and ask them individually because baggage weight allowance isn't universal. :D

Tell me what cities you're flying to and from, and the dates you want and I'll see if I can find you something cheap!

AmyEnMontreal comments on Avianca Changing Name?!

Hi You do realize that if they change their name, they will loose their title of the OLDEST AIRLINE IN THE AMERICAS!

The tile comes as "Oldest Airline running under the same name, KLM is #1, Avianca #2, Mexicana (or Aeromexico, don't remember which) #3. If they change their name, they loose the title, and Mexicana (or AM) can now claim that title!!!! I say they keep that name!!!

AmyEnMontreal comments on Great article about our wonderful president of Colombia!

Too bad that he only gets one term.

They should consider changing it to two terms so that they could keep him around until 2010!

AmyEnMontreal comments on

unfortunately, manizales is limited to bogota service only. Perhaps a few charters.

try air canada to Bogota and then avianca to mzl.

anywhere else you'd need to stop twice. (no buffalo - bog direct, unfortunately) unless u don't mind driving to JFK and flying Avianca all the way.

AmyEnMontreal comments on Avianca's websites, backwater operation.

LOL I find that strange about Avianca and their website, considering their reservations system is computerized and it's a program that is used by many other airlines.

You should try booking with expedia or something similar, they always have the same fares as the airline itself with a $6.50CAD/$5.00USD charge to book. Subtract $5.00USD from the fares of any flight on that site and you have the airline price. I know this because I once worked for an airline reservations line myself. All you're going to get from the airline is a bunch of agents on minimum wage trying to con you into paying them commision.

Of course, this is only for airlines, like Avianca, which for some reason don't have an automated website reservations system. If you're booking on say American, use their website because their agents are only there to book people with lack of internet. Booking through the net also gets you real good web only fare discounts! So only use expedia to book a full vacation (hotel + car + package)... or if the airline is so behind in the times it won't let you book through it's on webpage.

AmyEnMontreal comments on PORQUE ESCRIBIMOS EN INGLES

utopiacowboy:

Of course they're within their right to only speak French if they want to, but they should still progress to learn English. I grew up here, and I know French is a great language; it's the primary language I communicate in! I didn't mean that they (the separatists) don't have a right to speak only French, if they want to, it is their choice and it is their native tongue!

What I meant was that it is often regarded that all English speakers, not only Americans, are lazy to learn other languages because of English world dominance. I know this not only from living in Quebec, but from penpals around the world. It seems to be something that is always discussed with me when I write to a new penpal. The thing is that these are just common stereotypes! I used the Quebequian Separatists example as a way to show people that it's not just English Natives, but that every culture and language has a group that refuses to change their ways, and some... like the Quebequian Separatists, whom go to such extremes as to ignore the co-official language, and the majority spoken language, of the country in which they live!

AmyEnMontreal comments on PORQUE ESCRIBIMOS EN INGLES

English is the language that has been accepted worldwide as the main commerce language. It is simpler to have a site like this, for foreigners wanting to learn about colombia and mainly colombians living abroad, to be in English. Spanish is popular to learn in the US, but in other places Spanish isn't popular at all. I have learned from my penpals that in Germany, Italy, Holland, and Russia most people take English as their second language, while Spanish is sometime, as my Italian penpal put it "seen as the 5th most important". With so many people willingly learning English it would be more convienient to hold a forum, made specifically for foreigners asking locals and nationals living abroad questions and comments about Colombia, in English! It's not just a bunch of Colombians dicussing Colombia, it it were then it would seem strange to have it in English. But, if this site where mainly in Spanish it would defeat the purpose of why it was made. Why ignore the language that nearly everyone can understand or has even basic knowledge of. Sure, you write about getting foreigners familiar with Spanish, it being the language of Colombia and all, but I bet you would ignore a French Language forum on Quebec, because you probably don't speak French... and if not that, a native language forum of any country whose language you don't know.

As for Americans not wanting to learn, you probably have never met Quebequian separatists. They live in a country where English is the main language, but they refuse to speak it anyway. Most people who bad mouth the US have never been there and base their anti-American prejudice on stereotypes, you can't judge a place you've never been to.

AmyEnMontreal comments on Hello

Bonjour, comment çava? :D!

My cousin has found a good price with Germanwings!

They're based in Dusseldorf, and they fly non-stop to Rome. It's perfect, but thank you anyway ;D. XXX OOO

AmyEnMontreal comments on Hello

Thank you Johan for your reply. I will be calling up the Embassy in Ottawa tomorrow to get an appointment. I will not be going to England, so I don't have to worry about a British Visa. My three girlfriends (all Canadian born Québecoises!) and we will only be going to Italy and Germany. We were planning on touring Italy, then taking the train to Dusseldorf to visit my cousin and her husband/children who live there. Unfortunately, it seems like it'll be too much of a hassle trying to get a swiss visa just to transit by train! Instead, my cousin is trying to find booking on a low fare carrier that flies Rome - Dusseldorf non-stop. Hopefully I'll have enough time to get the visa for December. I'll be sure to gather up that information you told me about, thank you for that advice. It's going to be such a hassle if I have to pay the fees to change my flight, and ask for a new vacation schedule.

Too bad we didn't know each other a month ago, Johan. I could've shown you around. ;D

Thank you both actually, this is exactly the information I was looking for. :D

AmyEnMontreal comments on Hello

Thank you so much, I couldn't find information anywhere, and all my friends were telling me different things...

some said that Colombia was part of the visa waiver agreement, some said that having canadian residency will give me the same benefits as a canadian citizen.

As for switzerland, we're still wondering whether to use the train or fly on a low fare carrier based out of dusseldorf. If I'll need another visa, then we'll go for the low fare carrier.

Thank you very much, once more.

AmyEnMontreal comments on The thing about Americans is that....

This was very biased on everyone's part. Instead of arguing about who's better, who hates whom, and why, we should focus on ways to unify the world.
