"you just gave away the keys to the car, albatross....." You may be right... I'm not all that sure about the cultural differences... or relationship dynamics in general. The fact is that I really don't want her dancing with other guys, so by making her friend ask her to dance with me, I was hoping to make the point that I consider us off-limits to other people. I realize that most Colombians will dance with just about anyone and normally it doesn't mean anything... but I'm not Colombian. I do trust her, but she is young, attractive and friendly... and 3,000 miles away. But I guess if she loves me, then I don't have to worry. And if she doesn't love me, then I guess I don't have to worry either.

Similarly, I was out with my novia about a month ago for her birthday. We were with two of her girlfriends... after a bottle of Rum, one of them wanted to dance with me, I told her she had to ask my novia. (I really didn't want to dance with her anyway) All I know is that my novia was thrilled that I made her friend ask her for permission.

You ask a question like that and you expect a serious response ? For 15 years, I've watched as European men (Italians especially) turned Cuba and the Dominican Republic into their little playground... I guess the Mediterranean is all played out. Most Cubans are too dispirited to care, but not a few Domincans are beginning to hate us. Medellin is my favorite city south of La Habana... I spend as much time there as I can. Many here try to sugar-coat it, or just don't care, but the fact is that the more Colombia is exposed to gringo tourists, especially those just "looking for a good time", the more they will grow to resent and dislike us. Believe me, the best thing I can do for Medellin is to "teach" you to go elsewhere. (I hear Costa Rica is awesome... it's beautiful and the woman there really love white meat.) I'm sure plenty here would agree with me... if they weren't trying so hard to "be nice".

Thanks for the pics and inspiration... I've been trying to get to Leticia for years. Going for a swim in the Amazon is one of the two things I've left to do (the other is to climb Mount Kilamanjaro). Coincidently, I might be there in May as well... I'm waiting to find out my novia's interview date at Bogota before I buy the tickets.

And how was your Hotel, did they have the little bars of soap you like ?... did they give you a TV controller, or did you have to get up and change the channel yourself ? Were the taxicabs comfortable ?... I hope you didn't have to wait too long for one... especially in the rain. Tourons can migrate as they choose, 'cause they're special and everyone wants to be their friend... and any class is cool, as long as you're there. Next time you're in Medellin, try the "Bandeja Paisa", and then get held-up at gunpoint, then you will have had the "True Columbian Experience".

First, I don't think anyone here is sugessting that women are inferior. Second, if a particular couple works out a system where the traditional Male/Female roles are reversed, and it works for them, great. But many men are not happy when they end up house-husbands, and many women aren't too thrilled either when their "man" cannot support them and is home washing dishes while they are hard at work. And if the Husband and/or the Wife are unhappy with the situation, then the marriage is in trouble and if there are children, then they are most certainly in trouble. When both are educated professionals, doctors, lawyers engineers, ect, that seems to work out better, I don't know why. But then the kids end up in day-care all the time.

Sorry, I deleted my previous comment because I found the rate info. But I just noticed that it looks like I would need to install their equipment (looks something like a router or modem) before I could use the service. I thought it was a VOIP service like Vonage, where I could just call from my cellphone without needing my own internet access. She lives in Cali, but I always call her on her cell, not her mother's landline (fijo).

Many assume that under 18 is illegal in the U.S., but there is no federal age of consent... that is left up to the individual states and varies from 16-18. However, there is a federal law that makes it illegal for anyone under 18 to be photographed (or video, ect) in any kind of explicit manner. (This was done to keep 16-18's out of the porn industry) In other words, you may be able to have sex with your 16 year old girlfriend, but if you take a picture of her nude, you've commited a federal offence.
