Aji1 comments on Let me tell you something. I have done international business in many parts of the world for a few years now. The scenario you describe is typical in all of Latin America, Middle East, and Asia. Remember that the American "Rule of Law" really does not exist outside of our borders, not like you know it here anyway. In China it is the rule of three. You refuse tea 3 times when offered to you and accept it on the 4th. You meet 3 times with a potential business prospect three times, and maybe you will talk numbers and make a deal on the 4th. That is not always true, but it is a rules to adopt so you can maintain your patience when dealing with these folks. I think Latin America moves a little faster, but they will all screw you in a heart beat. Due diligence and smart negotiations are key. America is the land of the "McDeal", nowhere else. Resign your self to that fact. Zai jian

Aji1 comments on There's a rumble going down, and gentlemen, you are invited... Did anyone notice... Did anyone notice CA could not even gracefully accept my apology? Could someone please place her in front of a mirror so her spring will wind down. She clearly "quiero pelear sola"!!! Your a real piece of work CA.

Aji1 comments on There's a rumble going down, and gentlemen, you are invited... Sorry CA, I stand corrected Sorry about that CA. Unfortunately I have to work my at ss off most of the time and did not have nor take the time to do any real in depth research on your history etc. Admittedly, I only catch bits and pieces when I breeze through here. I offer my sincere apologies to you and publicly admit my error of you travels etc. ... oops, screwed the pooch on that one. I really do not think you have to worry, at least short term, about Colombia becoming like Thailand. I have been to both, and Colombia is not Thailand, not by a long shot. Most casual tourist are still too freaked out about traveling to Colombia it seems, Americans anyway. Let's differentiate two things. Sex slavery, underage prostitution and the like are terrible and needs to be prevented for the girls and punished for the guys, period. However, it is a very different thing when you have thirty something housewives working as prepagos in Colombia or 25 year old girls working as factory workers by day and hooking by night in China, Vietnam etc. These girls come up to me and solicit me. I happen to know that there is a whole bunch of freelancers that pays a fee to more respectable clubs to allow them to come in and "hook up". Nobody is forcing them to do this. So let's please make the distinction about the two very different groups. That in fact gets to the point of the issue for me. Stop with the moralistic, judgmental crap you want to lay out there on every guy that has ever paid for it. There is supply and demand and economic motivations, and that is it. I really do not know much about the prepagos in Colombia other than what I hear third person. I have never participated in this in Colombia personally. Although my Colombiana has offered to allow me to indulge myself the last two times we visited. No by the way, no cachos in my back, she is just a liberal soul and she knows what makes most men tick and allows me a ton of freedom. Please separate the two issues with regards to prostitution. You seem to be smart and educated which is why I do not fully understand the sweeping generalizations you make. As for the penis envy, it was just a comment on your aggressiveness in this forum. You seem to have an abundance of testosterone but lack the equipment, therein my "envy" comment. Lighten up. In a way this thing with you for most in here I think (not sure) is similar to an older brother taunting a three year old brother with their favorite toy. You act mean and by god you get mean thrown back at you. Surprised?? You should not be. I like some of your postings on other issues, but it is the moralist angle you take on this one that spurs on your detractors, including me. If I want that, or to feel bad and worthless about myself I will start going back to Church. I for one like the Dutch approach to these types of things. It is much more realistic and shows more understanding of human nature. Remember, none of this is personal for me, it just makes me chuckle how it seems so personal to you. Lighten up, but not too much, you are the funniest thing to blow onto this forum in a while.

Aji1 comments on There's a rumble going down, and gentlemen, you are invited... Envy Hummmmmm. A Scott with a NA boyfriend. Folks, I betting she has never even been to Colombia and probably pulled Barranquilla off the map after realizing it is under represented in here, no offense Elmo. She probably read a report on Latin American prostitution, stumbled across this site in her lonely hours, and then started on her Joan of Arc bit. Sounds a little like a crusader type with penis envy perhaps, lol. CA, I know you make good points. However, as has been said a hundred times before, it is Colombianos that create the demand for the prepagos in Colombia, not the occasional horny stranger. The strangers just pay a gringo iva. I personally think keeping the discussion in here is better, that way our beloved moderators can make sure we keep it clean and somewhat civil. IMHO. La Verdad es mi gusta burlar de te, nada mas.

Aji1 comments on There's a rumble going down, and gentlemen, you are invited... I thought I had a few narcissistic traits.. Ni hao PBH folks from Shanghai. I almost decided not to waste my time on this one, but the troll queen pulled it out of me. My weakness I guess. CA, this one takes the entire pasteleria. I think we all now know for sure you do not have a BF, and is there any doubt why. Go pay a guy to adjust your attitude babe, oh but then that would make you just like all the guys you rail against I guess, LOL. I for one am content to converse in the PBH dimension. My profile is one of the most complete you will find on here. I pull no punches. Enough time spent on CA. I am off to Mao Ming Lu to have a drink and grab some.

Aji1 comments on How do you feel about her age Let me throw some gasoline on this fire First of all I think you need to accept that many guys want to deal with there needs first. After that is out of the way they can be good loving partners to their women. Women from places other than the U.S. typically have a very different way about them. I would say the women of western Europe are the most similar to those from the U.S. There is also the fact that almost all men like to bang on a hot looking young hard body, period. It makes them feel good. I married a woman from Bogotá soon to be ten years ago. I am forty, she is thirty 38, today in fact. She still looks way hotter than the majority of the 24 year old here in the U.S.that have already started to let themselves go, even at that young age. There is also the fact, with me anyway, Caucasian women are my least favorite flavor. My wife knows what men like and how men are. She has two maybe three half siblings thanks to her fathers ways. Alas, she is ok with that. Five years ago she came to me when she was pregnant and told me I was free to "step out". Why? She knows I would not trade her in for anyone, period. Nor would she trade me in. She lets me have girlfriends scattered around because she has admitted our difference in sex drive and that my banging other chicas helps to keep my self confidence high, and she is not left wanting for anything. As for my girlfriends I have scattered around. They are typically 21-28 year old. They like older guys. Not old guys, but more experienced guys. Guys they can learn from and benefit from the company they keep. I have a girlfriend in Shanghai I will see next week. My wife knows. My 24 year old Shanghai girlfriend knows about everything as well. I get the same treatment in Saigon as well. Try to get anything close to this with an American women... you will probably end up in court first. I knew when I was 28 years old, American women are not for me. I found this out after dating a Maori women from New Zealand. So I would imagine at this point ther is no longer a need to ask why would a guy marry or look for a women from _______ country.

Aji1 comments on Peso at 1930!!!... Laugh your Back Side Off Sweety Check it out below Sweety. Colombian peso rose more than any other currency against the dollar. Notice I said it appreciated in value. Yes, the dollar may be slipping, but the COP is definitely rising as well. By the way sweety, I could care less about knowing anything about you, nor was I attacking you personally. I took issue with the statements you were making and that you seemed to want to turn it into a bash the U.S. issue. I am certainly guilty of that myself at times. I do not have an issue with bashing the U.S., but it was the fact that you were using a flawed argument to do so. My issue was that you do not seem to know much about macro economics as you think, and you seemed more interested in taking a swing at Americans living in Colombia that indeed do benefit from a weak peso and/or a strong dollar. This is evidenced by your statement "high US dollar=happy Americans. Low US dollar=happy everyone else" Sweeping generalization like that goes against basic principles of macro economics and runs rough shod over all the details, intricacies, and nuances that are in play with this issue. This also shows who is not thinking globally as well as who does not understand the complexities of the global economy or currencies. As for Europe laughing at the U.S., let them laugh. I am laughing at them because their strong euro make the goods I am exporting more competitive in the markets I am selling to, and makes European goods less competitive against mine. Quite frankly a weak dollar is good for my business. Why, because I am exporting. The inverse of this being that a strong domestic currency, be it dollars, pesos, euros, baht, dong, or whatever, is bad for those that export. Given how important exports are to Colombia, there in lies the problem. Regarding layoffs, nobody can say exactly how many people will be effected by layoffs and such, it is a fluid process that is changing by the minute. However, what you seem to be doing is denying basic macro economic principles. Good luck with that one.
|
|
Aji1 comments on Peso at 1930!!!... Who do you think works for those Colombian Companies? Not Americans. A low dollar is bad for anyone who works for a company that depends heavily on exporting to the U.S. The price of your goods rises in the U.S. which decreases demand and makes your goods noncompetitive. Sales drop, layoffs follow. A low dollar is bad for any company that depends on exporting to the U.S. Eventually it will effect the employees of those exporting companies. It does not matter if those companies are in Colombia, Vietnam or wherever. Colombia is worse because not only is the dollar dropping but their peso is rising. Double trouble. I work globally and I see you do not get it. Duh yourself sweety!

Aji1 comments on If anyone asks where I am, I'm having coffee with Don Gringo. Reality Check Look around you. Colombian men exploit Colombian women for sex a million times more than all the extranjeros in the entire country ever thought about. It has become part of the culture. I see it with my own suegro. It will continue to go on even if another extranjero never enters Colombia. Get off your holier than thou self righteousness kick and come back to reality.

Been There I passed through Sincelejo at 4 in the morning. The bus was stopped at a check point on the edge of town, all the men were "invited" to de-board the bus. Everyone was patted down and checked out, except me. I became virtually invisible to them after they saw my little blue passport. I did not even open it up. I can't tell you much about the town other than it was still hot and humid at four in the morning. They were looking for people transporting various "stuff". Then I joined my family on the bus and we continued on to Barranquilla.

Aji1 comments on You bet!! Get use to it. At least for Colombianas That sounds just like my wife, but she manages to pull it off time after time. She may be able to roll in sh*t and come out smelling like a rose, but not this boy. An unplanned leap of faith for me virtually assures disaster for my endeavor. She has just had to get use to my more logical, planned out approach and my position as the "brake" in the relationship. I make thing too complicated, she over simplifies. A match made in heaven, lol.

Aji1 comments on bogata to cartagena by bus.....WITH 3 KIDS Ooops forgot to mention It is safe to travel. Just ask around just before you go to make sure there is no imediate threat. It is more likely to have transportion/route/road problem than the other kidnapping etc. issues.

Aji1 comments on bogata to cartagena by bus.....WITH 3 KIDS Been There Done That BTDT, except I only had one small child. We went from Bogota over to Honda and up the valley etc. to Cartagena and Barranquilla. Very beautiful but it took 22 hours. I needed an ass transplant by the time I got there. One time on the way to Barranquilla we did a police inspection at 4 in the morning in Sincelejo. They rousted all the men off the bus and were checking papers. I tried my best to get one of them to look at mine, speaking Spanish to them and everything but just one of them even responded to me. He would only look at me and smile kind of dumbfounded. I guess they were entranced by my gringo pasty whiteness with my shorts and all. I thought to myself I could drop my pants and take a leak and they would not say anything to me. It was hilarious. All I can say is pack drinks and blankets if anyone is cold natured because it seemed like every time I did a long trip on a bus they had two settings for the air conditioner, off and polar ice cap. I love the cold but JEEEZ, they had even me turning blue. Also be patient. You will see just how poor the road system is. I was amazed the condition of the major route we were taking. There was a lot of easing along around 35 miles per hour because of not being able to pass on the little two lane road and the frequency of the holes in the road. Some of the holes were so bad a small car could easily disappear without a trace. I guess corruption prevents the funds from taxes and los peajes ever making to the road.

Aji1 comments on GLOBALIZATION Pax Romano Globalization has been going on since before the Roman Empire sprouted. Technology has accelerated the process drastically since the industrial revolution and more recently with computers. Dingo’s arrived in Australia over 4 thousand years ago as the pets and work dogs of Chinese navel merchants for example. Globalization is nothing new at all. The only difference is it is happening at the speed on your internet connection now rather than at the speed of a four month Trans Atlantic crossing by ship .

Aji1 comments on Getting American Visa Check it out first Remember, as a U.S. citizen entering our own immigration and HS system you have almost no rights at all. How many of your rights do you think they will respect? They may well lock you up and then you sit and wait many months for a deportation hearing before they then give you the boot. Were you mistaken for someone else? Have you visited countries that the U.S. may have issue with, you know, a little weekend trip to Cuba or North Korea perhaps. "Come with us sir, we have some additional question to ask you", that is HS's standard greeting that means your day is about to start sucking, in a major way. Our immigration and HS is messed up. Out of control in many ways and not doing a good job in other ways. WTF is about all I can say. I would make sure before I risked getting thrown in the slammer to wait for a U.S. immigration proceedings, IMHO.

Aji1 comments on Arepas are they just fat Tortillas? Any Taco Bell's ? Unicentro in Bogota On subject, I had a bite in a "Mexican" restaurant in Unicentro in Bogota about 18 months ago. It was Mexican fast food, or sold as such. I do not know what it was but it was not Mexican or even Tex-mex, it was strange, and not good. It reminded me of a similar experience eating "Mexican" in a restaurant on the square in Cologne Germany. I left saying what the hell was that?? So... I hate to burst your bubble, but it is in Colombia, and it is not pretty. Give me fritanga, papa creollia (SP) y arepas con caso over that crap every day.

Aji1 comments on Any health precautions ? Agree with above posts but... If you travel overseas much at all do your self a favor and get the three rounds of shots need to complete the hepatitis vaccinations. It takes six months to finish but go ahead and start even if you will travel before you are able to finish the three shots. Hep A, B, C is everywhere and it is easy to prevent. This is coming from a season world traveler who is not shaken by much, but I have seen the complications of Hep. Vale la pena.

Aji1 comments on The Oil Palm In Colombia High Melting/Burning Point Palm oil has a high burning/melting point. It is used often in chocolate candy to help prevent it from melting in your hand. As for deforestation, there are plenty of exterior factors pushing that along independent of palm oil plantations.

Aji1 comments on The Oil Palm In Colombia Oil Palm in Malaysia I have seen mile after mile of oil palm plantation in Malaysia. It is productive and even lucrative, but it comes at a cost. Very much a mono culture. Indigenous wildlife barely use these areas. It was a stark difference between the oil palm/rubber tree plantations that fill the area and the indigenous forest cover type.

Aji1 comments on Small question on Bogotá Tongue in Cheek Humor A little tongue in cheek humor. The weather is highly variable it seems to me which is not entirely atypical of a high altitude location. I mean come on, I saw on RCN the other day that somewhere in the north of Bogotá or in Chia, somewhere around the savanna I don't remember exactly, they got almost two inches of sleet from a thunderstorm. I did post some non-biased links she could check out and see for herself. Moron?? I don't think so but you never know. I do have my "Homer" moments however. (Laugh Here! Overly serious people laugh doubly hard.)

Aji1 comments on Small question on Bogotá Bogota Weather Bogota is nice if you like it cool. It is definitely in the mountains boasting an altitude of over 8,300 feet. That is also why the weather is a little weird sometimes, very variable, but I like it. If it is rainy in the morning it will be warm and sunny in the afternoon. If sunny in morning it will be raining with sleet and hail in the afternoon. If it is hailing in the morning it is a sure sign of the apocalypse, run like hell. It should take a solid ten years to start seeing wear marks on that tank top.

Aji1 comments on Vote Them Out, and Replaced by More of Same I have always said voting them out and regaining control of the purse strings is the only way to make the U.S. Gov. responsive to the people they purport to serve. However, in watching and participating in the democratic process for over twenty years it seems that only one thing ever rings true... sh*& floats to the top. I have voted for only one person for president that I felt good about (Regan), but he ended up being a looser as well in his treatment of the poor and for his foreign policy lies. The difference between Politicos in Colombia and the U.S is that ours in the U.S. know how to do it without getting their hands dirty. They are all the flip side of the same coin and in the end you have no true choice. You end up doing what I always have to do, vote for the one you think will do the least amount of harm. I have traveled to Colombia and many other places and thankfully most seem to be able to separate the actions of our government from the attitudes of our citizens. If you can have a discussion with them and explain the reality of the situation they tend to be surprised at first, and then saddened by hearing the new reality of what the U.S. is really like. I love the U.S. but we have problems that are not being addressed. One event that seemed to shock many people outside of the U.S. was the ineptness of the gov. response to Hurricane Katrina. This made the “where does the U.S. get off being so self righteous about how they do things” argument sound very hypocritical. It really hits home. “And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?” Matthew 7:3. I am getting off track a little so I will end my rant. IMHO

Aji1 comments on The Bogota Airport and a Woman from Medellin Better safe than sorry Expect the worst and be pleasantly suprised if it turns out to only be paranoia. Besides, I think the paranoid comments was based upon jsmithjoe's tone. He sounds like he is primed to fall. It is hard to keep your wits about you after you fall. The issue is not is the poster dumb, it is about retaining your wits about you. As shown in the quote below, he already has one foot on the slippery slope.

Aji1 comments on The Bogota Airport and a Woman from Medellin DG is dead on with his advise. I spent almost all of my time with my wifes friends and family when in Bogota. It gave me a chance to see them in action. It also gave my wifes family a chance to get to know me and understand "soy un gringo que tiene palabra". Thus I have never had a problem of them, or my wife, presuring me to send her family money etc.. It has been great going on ten years now. It is not a "home court advantage" if she, or they, are trying to decive you. The advantage is yours. Besides, she knows all the best and cheapest places in Medellin, why would she want to come to Bogota? Whatmore, Medellin is an easy trip from the U.S., even if you have to change planes. It is not like it is a 32 hour trip to India from the U.S. I worry she is hiding something. Maybe she is just poor, but you need to know the real deal. You won't find it in Bogota if she is from Medellin. Open your eyes, free your mind, and your a s s will follow.

Aji1 comments on According to mi Bogotana... The following is my wife's take on this subject. Of course people change. She says Colombians, who are just common folks like we are, arrive here from Colombia and think and act as if they "caga flores". My wife say this characterization is true very, very often about her own people living here in the U.S. Her phrase is "criado en mérida, pero aqui son delicado de estómago". Thankfully she has not changed very much in almost tens years together in the U.S. However, she is very critical of how many, many of her countrymen act over here. Reporting the news here, not making the news.

Aji1 comments on Valentine roses get dipped in chemicals Ecomonics 101 If organic anything is to ever be adopted in any industry it has to meet the same quality and cost effectiveness measures as the non-organic alternative, period. The China comment is getting at the cost effectiveness issue. The two advantages Colombia has over China is location relative to the U.S. and the European (lesser degree) markets. Secondly, since Colombia is equatorial, the energy input requirements are easier to manage in growing a profitable, marketable product. Dutch companies are already investing in production in Africa to supply the European market as a closer less expensive alternative to South America... so there you go.

Aji1 comments on Used Construction Equipment in Colombia Seperate but related question What size (make, model# etc) of skid steer would you recommend to use for loading hardwood logs into a shipping container? You have to be able to grasp the log by the end and lift it up above the other logs you have already placed in the container to shove it on in. You are talking about a 16 foot log weighing up to 5000lbs sticking out in front of you. Is that even possible? I ask because a skid steer would be much more versatile and practical than a hard wheeled low mast forklift on a small log yard. Any advice is appreciated.

Aji1 comments on For those that get pissed at the Spelling of Colombia HUMMMMMMM... There is some dispute about ole Chris’s origins. Things such as he rarely ever wrote in anything other than Spanish. He may have also been an illegitimate son and possibly a Jew, both good reasons to obscure your origins in his day. What’s more, he may have portrayed himself as being from Italy to cover up his possible participation in a sea battle against the same Spanish kingdom that he later received support from to finance his exploration. However, I really do not say those things to keep fire shots across each others bow and gets away from the original point of spelling Colombia correctly. The proper spelling is always how it is spelled within it’s own borders. Just look at how you would spell Thailand or China in their own script. It is all relative to be sure.

Aji1 comments on For those that get pissed at the Spelling of Colombia Amerigo Vespucci, Cristóbal Colón To start with I do not want my tone to be interpreted as being too critical or harsh because that is note my intention, although I know I am more than capable of coming off as a horses ass with little effort on my part. :) You should note that "Columbia" has common usage in the United States and Canada, not "America". There is in fact no country on Earth simply named "America", which is why you can piss off anyone south of the U.S. by referring to yourself as being from "America" and implicitly referring to the U.S. when you do so. You should also note that the Americas were named for Amerigo Vespucci who helped supply and outfit Don Cristóbal Colón for his third and fourth expeditions to what he thought was Asia at the time. Vespucci later explored South American and was the first to recognize it as a new continent and not as part of Asia. The name "Christopher Columbus" is an English creation just like "Estatos Unidos" is a Spanish creation. I think it comes down to people being overly picky just like I am doing now, and assuming the spelling is the same as is used in the states. I think the grind comes in because the offenders do not bother to do a Google search for "Columbia" and seeing what you come up with, it will not be a country in South America. That is of course, IMHO.

Aji1 comments on Dial 911, Colombian Chicas are disappearing at an alarming rate. I humbly apologize for my error. I absolutely spoke too soon regarding the disappearing chicas. After Tinto brought this to my attention, further searching revealed that they are in fact all well and accounted for. I am not quite sure why they dropped off of the home page (at least on my computer) but I did in fact find them after it was brought to my attention. I sincerely apologize and really did not mean for the post to take an accusatory tone regarding the moderators as much of a joke about the Southern Baptist (which I did in fact spend several years being a part of myself) and political correctness. PC has certainly been a hot issue in here recently and I guess I jumped too soon and assumed the worst. I humbly apologize for my error.

Aji1 comments on I PROTEST!!! Stop the Censorship Who cares about having a women moderator, that would be fine and having more women on here would be great as well, it is needed. I just wish there was less censorship and deletion of threads that may not be deemed as "politically correct" by an overly conservative moderator, understanding of course the owner has a say as well. Maybe there needs to be a "free for all" or "boys club" forum in the blog where everyone can just let it rip. Let's face it, most interest in Colombia seems to be by men and centers around women. I think most of men’s interest in anything eventually returns to interest in women. So you are fighting human nature, male human nature anyway. That is my two cents worth anyway.

Aji1 comments on Order colombian pesos.... Search this site I am sure there are several threads about this on this site. Personally, I always try to bring a few pesos back to the states for when I return next time to Colombia, I already have them in hand. That not being an option, I would just change enough for the first day or so in Colombia in the US airport you will be leaving out of, i.e. Miami, Houston Atlanta, etc. I am not positive but I seem to remember getting a better exchange in Colombia for my dollars than here. Go to http://eltiempo.terra.com.co/. Look at the first page toward the bottom right and they tell you the rates at the change houses. Compare this to what you can get here and make your decision. If you will not be arriving late at night you can change a few dollars in the airport in Colombia and then go out the next day to a "Change House" in the city. I often go to one of the houses in "Metropolis Center" in Bogota. You might want to mention where in Colombia you are traveling in order to get more accurate information from the PBH family. If you have a local connection they should be able to guide you as well.
