I went through Barranquila airport in December and was given a 90 day visa when requested. When I went though Bogota in March they wouldn't give me a 90 day only a 60 day. I've read a lot on this subject and if your American they DID offer a 90 day visa. When I asked the Bogota immigration officer she told me first that they didn't offer a 90 day tourist visa then after I showed her multiple 90 day visas on my passport she told me it depended on the city of entry that they were all different. ...
Looking for a good reccomondation for a callling card I can buy online for calling a Colombian cell phone from the U.S? I was hoping that from the wealth of insightful people here someone might know a good one. If you could post the link that would be sweet! Thanks. ...
FYI after hearing Brava beer is extinct it reminded me of something. Exito has a exclusive licence in Colombia for a rum from Guyana called "El Dorado". It's fantastic! It's only sold at Exito and it even says so on the back label. In Santa Marta it sold for 21,000 pesos. In Bogota 14,500. It's considered a 'ron obscuro" dark rum. Everyone of my friends whose tried it loves it. I saw a guy buy out all of it on Cr.7 the other day and he asked me If I wanted the 2 bottles in my cart a ...

What are some hard to find items in Colombia that are cheaper and more plentiful in the states? I'm asking to see if I miss anything for myself or others when I return soon. For example I noticed natural peanut better and good brown mustard was hard to find. Anything else? ...
Thought this was amusing. I was making my accomodations and I called one of the places I stayed before. I asked the women if she remembered me because she told me before she worked there for years and it hadn't been that long since my last stay. After describing myself I said, "don't you remember me? I had some other friends meet me at your place and I brought you extra business. I stayed here a month." Her "ahhh not really, to me all Americanos look alike" ...
How come no one ever speaks much of Letica? That was the first city in Colombia I was ever in. The tri-border down there is very interesting. It's weird when you cross the street into Tabatinga Brazil and no one speaks Spanish and then you go to Santa Rosa Peru (which is an island in the middle of the Amazon) and it's so poor. Then in Letica it feels really safe a sleepy little burg with friendly people riding motorcycles everywhere and it seems like they have more money then the Brazil and ...
Anyone know of a moderately budget place in Santa Marta? Every place I've checked is booked. I made this trip last minute and I guess I ignorantly didn't expect that. Before and after those dates no problem. I prefer my own room and air-cond if possible. I'd even take just a secure room to crash in at this point. Let me know. Thx ...
Sorry for so many questions at once but I'd like to have these questions answered before I leave so I don't have to think about it when I'm down there. Thanks for all the great answers!! First, I'm going to be staying in Santa Marta for awhile and I'm kind of a gym rat (2 to 3 hours a day 6 days a week) Last time I was there I couldn't find a gym. People told me there was one in Rodadero but I didn't see it. I'd actually prefer one in the old city if possible. So, does anyone know of a gym ...
Just so you know this question isn't so much related to Colombia as budget hotels in general. If you stayed in a cheap hotel what are the odds you think your valuables would be ganked? I'm considering bringing my laptop but I'm too lazy to back up my photos and music. I'd cry if I lost them. I'm never had anything stolen (other then an umbrella in Peru) but I usually stay in cheap places and don't bring anything worth stealing. But it would be nice to have my laptop. Is it worth the paran ...
The last time I was in Colombia I came in through Letica via boat from Peru. I asked the customs agent for the 90 stamp and he gave it to me. When I made it to Santa Marta I met some other Americans and they acted really surprised that I got a 90 stamp. They said they asked for 90 days and only got 30 days. Is there any trick to getting the longer stamp? It's kinda irritating when your making plans and you don't know in Advance how long your visa stamp will be. This time I'm flying in thou ...
I've Spent more time in Mexico than Colombia. Really the only thing I like better in Mexico is the food. I enjoyed most everything about Colombia more. Although when I lived in Mexico the word "Gringo" is used only for Americans. Not for others of Europe, or European decent. I hung out with a Swiss guy when I lived there and not once was he called Gringo. In fact he would call me Gringo amongst our Mexican friends and it irritated me enough to ask him to stop. The history of the word date ...
Hello PBHr's I have a question: I'm arriving at BAQ and I want to know if anyone knows the easiest, cheapest, safest way for me and my luggage to get to downtown Santa Marta? I'm no Colombia novice and I did once take a van (shuttle) from Cartagena to Santa Marta. The van stopped in Barranquilla but for the life of me I don't remember the shuttle company and I didn't have to pick it up from Barranquilla airport like I will have to this time. I never spent time in Barranquilla just a 5 minu ...
