ACBlessing comments on How Common is WIFI in Bogota

There's ten Internet cafes on every block....no need to drag around a laptop

ACBlessing comments on debit cards

Perhaps its time to look into Banco de Bogota then, not sure about the details though. I never got charged ATM fees at the Citibank in Zona T even though my account is was based in the US

ACBlessing comments on debit cards

I've used my Bank of America card many times in the past and always got ripped off with ATM fees and transaction surcharges. Even when the ATM was out of money, I'd get charged $5 just for trying. Also, not all ATMs give out the same maximum of money. That's why I use Citibank now...it's in the U.S. and Colombia and I can get a million pesos for the weekend when needed. I was also considering Banco De Bogota as well because they have an office in Miami to open an account but I don't know enough about it to advise. I think economic sense comes down to how long you plan to stay in Colombia. If it's just for the weekend or a month, ATM fees and/or currency exchange fees won't amount to much but if you plan to live in Colombia for awhile, best use a bank with a presence in Colombia.

ACBlessing comments on Hotel & Saturday nightlife in Bogota

WTF? Let me get this straight...you're arriving Saturday night and you think you're going to get a hotel room, on a weekend...with no notice, for $45?? Good luck dude... Funny thing is, some friends of mine (whom I had already made reservations for) are showing up at St. Simon tomorrow night (Friday) so when you get to town, look me up by my last name you see at the bottom here and you can join us.
By the way, Gotica is great if you're 18 and don't mind head-pounding ritmo until 9 a.m. and if you're in St. Simon (pronounced "san see mon"), (rooms 203-703), you have a front row seat to all the stumbling drunks and fights from Gotica and all the usual suspects on 82. Bad news is: if you're up that late (or early), you're probably the one in the fight. P93 is mejor but good luck getting in anywhere if you're arriving in Bogota that late. Really, some of this town's best places aren't in the Zona or P93 but I'll defer that to DonGringo to chime in.
My advice, call St. Simon right now (011 57 1 621 8188) and either Hector or Angel will answer and they both speak English. Otherwise, good luck and enjoy Bogota.

ACBlessing comments on Bogota this weekend

www.xe.com is good also. I just wouldn't come down here with a bunch of cash...it's not safe on the street or in the hotel. A debit card makes the most sense because the banks handle the exchange rate automatically...it gets locked in on Friday until Monday. You get what you need (really just enough for taxis) and use the card for paying everything else. If you end up with too much Colombian cash you didn't use and have to exchange it back, then you're going to pay a second time no matter the exchange rate. I'd just take out $500,000 pesos and that lasts me more than a week, much less a single weekend that CDY is going to be here. Tell you what CDY, for 500K pesos, I'll pick you up at the airport myself and be your guide. ;-)

What's love got to do with it? All I can say is Cali Vea servicio domicilio and a fridge full of Bravas...you only need to wait 30 minutes instead of six months and you can have as many Bravas as you want as opposed to spouses.

ACBlessing comments on Bogota this weekend

Don't exchange your money Save if for your flight back. Go to the taxi counter like suggested and get the paper....if you look directly to your left, you'll see a Davivienda ATM booth with lockable glass door. This is good because first, you don't have to go back into the airport to the second floor and all that. Second... Davivienda lets you take out $500,000 pesos at a time unlike the other ATMs. Since you'll be paying $5 per ATM withdrawl, get as much as you can per ATM visit.
Charlotte is a nice hotel but don't go hanging out by yourself in the Zona and get shitfaced. There'll be guys on every corner pushing you to visit 'ladies' clubs such as El Cedro as listed on the business card they'll hand you. Such drug dens are hard to get out of without paying an 'exit' fee and propinas (tips) to three different people.
Try the Zona T instead, it's one block away and perfect for first time gringos. Or look me up as I'll prolly be around there at the same time.

DonGringo Alright man, sounds like a plan, BBC Andino tomorrow (Thur) night about 9-ish, same place we were sitting before...if there's room.

By the way, did you hear about these repairmen who were actually ripping off whole stoves, fridges and that fancy digital washing machine? They'd say they need to take it in for repair and you never see them or your machine again, or they just take it when you're not there. It was a Caracol feature story.

I hear you about the repairmen not showing up... they usually need to leave two or three times for parts and if the job's too tough or they get a better offer, they just leave you hanging.

Another view From my balcony here in Salitre I saw a huge fire in the mountain west of the city center. I called a friend in that area and she said it was a forest fire. Huge plume of smoke made it all the way across town. Today is finally nice though...kinda hazy and windy but sunny and warm at least.

ACBlessing comments on San Andres Island??

Agreed I agree...this thread took a half-assed route. I also want to know if it is true about getting married in San Andres with only my passport and her with only her ID and a birth certificate. It just doesn't make sense when Colombian law dictates strict procedures for civil marriage.
I have already been married before in the Catholic church and man! What a lonnnngggggggggg complicated process of finding my baptism certs from another state 39 years ago and then all the apostilles and formalizing papers at the dioscese and notarias etc.
Back to San Andres...I am very skeptical but very hopeful (don't get me wrong) that I can quickly and legally get married in San Andres. I just don't want to have any validity problems when I start filling out the immigration paperwork.

ACBlessing comments on Cingular roaming in Colombia

Unlock You can buy an unlocked Treo 650 but not the 700 since that one is unlockable from Verizon. Perhaps the new Motorola Q is unclockable? Not sure.
I use my Cingular/Motorola Sliver L7 in Bogota with a Comcel prepago card. When I first got the phone here in the states, I took it down to the local cellular reseller (Alert Cellular) that sells all the cellular services and it cost me $20 to unlock it on the spot... a lot faster than ordering a kit to do it myself.
Incidentally, I had T-Mobile when I deployed to the sand and T Mobile actually emailed me back the unlock code for free. I don't think Cingular does that.

ACBlessing comments on Advice on driving in Bogota - rental cars and insurance

Insurance I used to rent a car from the airport in Bogota but everyone is right about the hassle. I had Allstate insurance, full coverage but by Colombian law or rental terms, my insurance would only cover 60% and no more. I could not even buy full coverage from them (Budget). They wanted my credit card, not just to pay but also to cover the remaining 40% out of pocket in case anything happened.

If you do rent a car, get a common one, remove the hubcaps and radio and store in your apt or hotel. My hubcaps were stolen in Jirardot.

Also, after I turned the car in (with replacement factory hubcaps) with not even a scratch and a full tank of gas, paid the bill and went back to my apartment...the gal from Budget called four more times wanting me to come in and pay a higher rate....absurd since I agreed by contract to one rate and paid in full upon returning the car. It was a done deal but she kept calling wanting another $200.

Ever since then, I hire a car and driver for the day, treat him well, buy lunch, dinner etc. and pay his permit fees to go out of Bogota...say to Chia or Melgar.

ACBlessing comments on Best Way of Calling the US from Colombia?

Mario I hear you about audio quality... I gotta confess that I have 6Mbps broadband and tweak the QOS in my router for VoIP giving it priority. Since I use Skype mainly to call a land line in Bogota, it has been working pretty good.

Otherwise, the casual user would probably find the audio quality pretty bad at times, especially calling a Colombian cellular. I was at a friend's house who has Comcast's new VoIP home phone service and it was very good since their network and equipment is optimized for their own VoIP, it's no wonder. I'm still not going to pay them $55 for phone service though.
