I'm certainly no expert since my own Colombian forum (in French) is only two months old (http://www.darloup.com/forum/).

But, naturally, even over a mere 8 weeks, I had to fight against SPAM and trolls.

Fighting SPAM bots is actually quite easy since members have to physically answer a question upon inscription (my question is: "Are you a bot?" ;-) and the default field answer is "yes". If a new member doesn't manually change the default answer, he can't register...

Fighting trolls is harder, but I have implemented two useful safeguards:

1) Any new member, upon registering, receives a confirmation link at his e-mail address. If he doesn't click on it, his account isn't activated. True, it's no guarantee, but at least it filters trolls (or spammers) who try to register with a gthhheeop at gmail.com address. At least it forces them to open a GENUINE gmail/hotmail/etc. account...

2) I've also implemented a feature whereby ANY potential member trying to register with a proxy IP address will fail. It works wonder!

3) A third safeguard (which I haven't implemented as yet because I don't need to) is, of course, for any new account to be activated by a mod. True, a newbie won't see his first post published right away (whilst the mods check his "credentials") but, if he is genuine, I'm sure he can wait for a few hours before his first post is published (and his account is activated)

In the case of PBH, I'm sure point (3) should be considered! That would solve ALL the problems of trolls registering (and posting their rubbish) whilst the European mods are sleeping and whilst Colombiano Gringo is occasionally enjoying a well-deserved break away from his PC.
