Mamita/papito/mama/papa

Meaning of mama/papa and diminutives

Hi,
I'm in the midst of writing a paper on diminutives in Spanish and I'd like to make sure I understand the nuances and meanings of mamita/ papito if I decide to include those in my examples. I always thought mamita was a compliment, un piropo. Estoy en lo cierto? I understand it as informal, colloquial speech, non-offensive, complimenting a woman.

Is papito said in Colombia? I've heard papacito in Cuba, but not sure about Colombia. I lived in Spain for a couple years too ...

Colombia: Uribe Must End Attacks on Media
Government Should Investigate Charges of Extrajudicial Executions, Fraud

(New York, April 17, 2006) - Instead of attacking the news media for reporting allegations of criminal activity in a Colombian intelligence agency, President Ã?lvaro Uribe should ensure a full investigation of the charges, Human Rights Watch said today.
Over the last two weeks, major news media have extensively reported on allegations of paramilitary inf ...

Foreign student beaten, Part II

For those of you who were interested in hearing more details of the story about my friend who was beaten, here are his words...

"Here`s basically what happened. I spent most of December in the Pacific coast portion of Cauca department, on the Guapi and Timbiquí Rivers. Neither of which has significant guerrilla presence except for far far up the river, nor paramillitary presence at all. One night in Timbiquí, I went out with some friends to a local bar. I was outside making a p ...

foreign student beaten by Armed forces

Since this happened to a close, personal friend of mine, I wanted to spread the word. He is half-Colombian and has been in Colombia for the last year doing research for his doctorate in Ethhnomusicology, specifically Afro-Colombian music. He has filed a complaint and it was published in the Opinion section of "El Tiempo".

Esto me preocupa

I was reading a couple of Human Rights Watch reports about the displaced population (around 4 million people) and then another one with regards to the Demobilization Process. I found them both upsetting. Any opinions or insight?

Here are the links and I have copied a paragraph from each report.

Amigos latinoamericanos:

For those interested in seeing a cut in US military aid to Colombia

Time is up for Plan Colombia. Act now!

Next week Congress will vote on more money for the next phase of Plan Colombia - as much as $750 million for 2006. The six-year policy of mostly military aid expires this year, and new money won't rescue a failed plan. It's critical that we make our voices heard at this point in the process!

The time to act is NOW. The FY2006 Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill, which funds military aid to Colombia, is headed to the floor f ...
